I have a 1968 square stern canoe that my brother and I started restoring unfortunately he passed away before we could finish it. He worked for Chris Craft boat company and Wellcraft Boat Company. The canoe is fiberglass all the fiberglass work is done but it needs to be painted. Painting fiberglass is a bit tricky and beyond my knowledge.

Surprised he did not mention keels. If you use a canoe on rivers and streams, you would want a keelless canoe. For lakes you would want one with a keel.

Another thing that should be mentioned is that in some some places (I know Washington and BC are two examples) you actually don't need to register your boat even if it has a *motor as long as it's under 16 feet, and flat/square sterns tend to be more stable than symmetrical canoes although not quite as fast (especially when not going forward). Also it isn't really good for hunting or in tight waters but most canoes can be modified for rowing rather than paddling. *There's a limit of

Hey ! Time for a difference of opinion ! And you did not mention two absolutely superior Wenonah canoes, Seneca and especially, Itasca. Itasca moves through the water with a full load, faster , smoother, easier than any other Wenonah canoe. yes, it is a big boat,, but if you compare the Champlain,, another very fine boat with the Itasca,, say,, equal loads of 900 pounds,, both work very well,, but the Itasca moves with half the effort. It is almost disgusting how easily it can be moved with a single paddler in the stern. And stepping to a different manufacturer,, Clipper Canoe builds the 20' McKenzie,, good rocker, excellent efficiency, huge loads,, and with a cover and flotation,,, one of the best wilderness white water boats ever. I've had mine through Class V and everything less. Special and spectacular. My only objection to your video discussion,, 14' to 16' boats? 'Maybe a 17', I disagree,, ash can all those little bitty boats. Get a kayak , that is what they are great at. Get a canoe,, and go places,, take the kids,, and the dog, and supplies for 4 weeks. Ride high and light. Don't buy something with a load capacity of 640 pounds and then go and put 650 pounds in it every time. Wanna carry 640 pounds (two people and minimum gear for a week). Get the Itasca,,, heaven.

@@CuHead1 I quite agree..Jensen designed some wonderful boats. Marlin at Clipper Canoe is an excellent designer as well.. And ,, you seem a bit like me,, I value that 'playground slide'. I have a Wenonah Kevlar Rendezvous (solo) with a tractor seat. I’ve always paddled it kneeling, but my knees can’t take it for long any more. Though kneeling gives great back support, I got a canoe seat exactly like the one in this video for sitting with legs in front (tiring for my back), which is fine with a flat bench seat, but what is different about one for a curved tractor seat?
@AlderCreekKayakCanoe
@AlderCreekKayakCanoe Жыл бұрын
The seat portion matches the outline of the tractor seat, so the whole thing is shaped more like a clam than a book. They attach similarly, and there are both temporary seat back options and more permanent installations. For a more permanent seat back option, check out the CushGear Backsaver (bench or bucket), and for a more temporary option, check out Wenonah's Super Seat (bench or bucket). We are currently out of stock of bucket/tractor seat backs at the moment.

When i canoe i rent at Loxahatchee river in Jupiter. Their boats are flat bottom and swing so wide. Would a keel spine help with tighter turning?
@andrewromanelli5364
@andrewromanelli5364 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John. Good question. If anything, a pronounced keel "spine" may help the boat track, but is more about adding structure and rigidity to your hull, increasing its glide efficiency. Features that will increase maneuverability would be shorter waterline, increased rocker at bow/stern, and increased volume in the ends at the waterline. You can create this by heeling a boat over, changing the shape of the hull engaged in the water. Cheers!

It is certainly possible! Putting one pup in the bow and one in the stern would balance the boat out nicely, but it could be a little snug for all 3 of you. You might consider a tandem that you can paddle solo - this would allow more space for the dogs and additional gear (cooler, drybag, spare paddle, etc.). Something like Northstar Canoes' Northwind 16 or 17 with a kneeling thwart could be just right. You may also consider a Wenonah Aurora with hung web seats, sitting in the bow and facing the stern.
