I'm so glad you got this working. I don't know how rare the Aldi 64's are, but I really like the aesthetic, it looks really smart. And I'm sure to you it is quite precious. Well done for keeping these machines going and saved from the landfill.

13:45 - The C64 shortboard doesn't run anywhere near as hot as the longboard, i don't think heatsinks are necessary. It's a much better design than the longboard. But getting rid of that crappy cardboard RF shield is a good idea, as that thing is a heat trap (and until like the metal shields isn't connected to any of the chips to remove any heat from them)

Love this channel. I think you're very quick with the desoldering gun. I have the cheapest store brand version, I have to heat for 3s or more (depending on trace width) before the solder melts enough to suck it in. Results is usually clean enough to gently pry/drag it off - unless it falls out. If a pin is still stuck, some fresh solder and a new run with the desolder gun will fix it. Hot air and desoldering braid looks like a lot of extra work. ;-)

I'm curious to know if the control port test will pass with a real SID or ARMSID installed as the other 4066 may still be bad. I believe it is only used for the pot inputs so it won't be obvious until you go to use a paddle or mouse

Those sockets Commodore used are the equivalent of hot garbage left to bake out in the sun. I've been working on a few C128's lately and it's gotten to the point where I just assume they're bad and replace all the sockets with machined pin sockets while I'm in there doing whatever work needs to be done. I was finding that the dodgy sockets would cause all sorts of issues ranging from the Kernal ROMs randomly not working, the VDC not working when trying to use one of those solderless 64k VDC memory expansion boards (or would work but would lose connection after the machine heated up), black screens, random crashes, etc. Yeah it takes some work to unsolder them and put the better quality ones in but it's worth it in the long run.

Did you ever learn the answer to why Diagnostics shows bad for the SID or 4066@U28? I finally did for mine, I bet it is for yours too. I had this same problem on a C64C that I own and had been pulling my hair out. I found that someone pointed out to Sven (on his Github "issues" for the harness) to change the resistors at R1, R2, R5, R6 (on the user port, for the joystick ports) from 120K to 110K which fixes the mis-diagnosis for newer boards (but continues to work correctly on older boards). In his old schematics, the resistors are 120K. In his newer schematics they are 110K because of this issue.
