Aldi v Lidl - Which Budget Speyside Whisky Is Best

We all have an Aldi or a Lidl somewhere near us, their reputation as being the best budget supermarkets makes them extremely popular with many people.
However did you know they also are selling single malts under the guises of Aldi's Glen Marnoch range and Lidls Ben Bracken range.
Both are priced similarly at under 20 pounds but which one is best out of the 2 Speyside offerings????

Gr8 review Matt not tried the Ben Bracken, but just picked up a bottle of the Glen Monarch 12 yr old form Aldi for £20 reduced down from £30- very nice, too drinkable -get a very citrus lemon on nose with honey /toffee on palate -love it -is one of the more sour whiskys as leaves a kind of white wine taste on finish, I recon Glen moray is spot on as their Elgin classic has very similar profile.

Interesting review, I'm one of the "general public" you mention and I really like the Lidl one, but haven't tried the Aldi one yet, will add it to my next shopping list.

Sainsbury's Speyside, whilst dearer than these two, is definitely worth a go. Lots of honey and vanilla - just how I like it.

my favourite el cheapo is lidl Abrachan blended malt at £17 - I prefer the G Marnoch to the G Bracken but both are superb value

I was trying to explain to a friend about well known distilleries floging off their whisky cheap through supermarkets. Lets say you were Glenmorangie how would yoo boost the size of your market for what you are already producing? You make lots more of it but how do you get new customers? You probably can't. You can always flog it off cheaper though through a supermarket label. Another oddity is A cheapo blended Scotch in ASDA which I can't remember the name of but it boasts on the label to be a three yearold! Why would you boast you just made it legally? LIDL do the same with their Queen Margo with an age statement boasting three years old. Both of these cheapo blends beat Bells and similar, hands down for a pleasant neat sipping whisky. They are amazingly smooth and flavourful. I think there's a hint in boasting it's 3 years old and that is there's 5 and maybe 8 year old in there too and people who know the score will think... why put out an age staement whicsky of 3 years old? Only explanation I can come up with. If people don't want to believe a three year old blended can be pleasant they should try the LIDL one as they do a half bottle for seven quid... nowt to lose. Trying to get pople to try supermarket budget whiskies isn't easy and that's talking to people who have never spent more than twenty five quid on a bottle! Think Bells and then think for the same same price and often less theres something much better down at the supermarket! The worst whisky I had last year was AERSTONE 10 year old single malt. Why I didn't enjoy it I'm not sure but the name and the label can be pretty meaningless.

I think there's a lot of it going on mate, it's a way to get rid of surplus stock!! I've got to try and get the marks and spencers single malt and try that as it's the English Whisky co supplying the whisky in it. I hope all is good buddy.

@@MattsCigarsAndWhisky I call it Marks and Spensive. Nice if you do a review of that I'm guessing few of us will have tried it. I'm not to bad considering.
