Neither and both at the same time. There's never a canon gender for the avatar, the closest we've ever gotten was Male Corrin for Birthright and Female Corrin for Conquest, but that was mostly for convenient marketing. And no, the genders of the avatars in Engage doesn't say anything, they just happen to be the forms under which they appeared, just like how Tiki appears as a child or the house leaders as their teenage selves.

All the tutorials show F Alear. Also, the sister twist works better as F. Who knows though. We'll get an answer someday. It took forever with Corrin and Byleth.
