You know what else I love about this song? It's the fact it isn't a song about a guy saving a girl with the power of romantic love (or sex). There's this huge narrative either dismissing or condemning girls in abusive relationships or girls suffering that the right man can take her pain away with "love." In this song, the narrator isn't trying to fix or save the girl with the power of anything. He's not insisting he understands what's going on with her or that he can save her, and he's definitely not taking advantage of her situation to make a move on her. He's just being a good person by telling her if or when she needs a friend, he'll be one she can turn to if she chooses. And if she wants to talk about it with him she can, but until that time is ready, he'll agree with her on her sentiment that it "must have been the wind."

I see this 2 ways: 1. A girl is going through some troubles at home and he (Alec we'll say) comes in to check on her. She isn't ready to say what is going on and so he agrees with the statement "Must've been the wind." He allows her time to get comfortable and tell him what's going on when she can. 2. He lives all alone, no friends or family to comfort him. He feels alone because of this and tricks himself into hearing something closeby to his neighbor. So he goes to check on them, asking if there was anything wrong and they reply, "Must have been the wind." Alec then goes back home to where he is lonely and needs a friend, where his mind tricks himself again. So in this it's not the neighbor in trouble, but the person telling the story because they need a friend and someone to talk to 3:

Can we take a moment to appreciate the genius of this song. It addresses a real issue and helps people, and is also just an amazing song. "We can talk about the noise when you're ready, but till then I'll say it must have been the wind." You can't push someone to talk about a traumatic experience. You could hurt them more by doing that. You just have to make sure they know that you are there for them.

Here's what I think: This video is not at all how the song writes itself. Alec is supposed to be taking an elevator, but he's on the stairs, the girl is supposed to be crying, and sweater should have been in fact, uptill her neck, but it's the exact reverse. She's taking off the very sweater, and looks happy dancing. It's just that, I think all this is in Alec's thoughts, that he'd go up the elevator, and she'd be crying, and he'd thus empathize and get a new friend. But in the very first and second line, he says he'd heard, glass shattering and that he was dreaming... That's exactly what it is. *Edit:* Or as pointed in one of the replies; 'Must've Been The Wind' refers to the dream that came to Alec. *Nothing in world seems to go the way we think, because, we always think for ourselves, but the world always pursues the greater good of everyone.*

Anyone notice the importance of “Tell you” in the verse where it says “wish I could tell you about the noise, but I didn’t hear a thing”? Alec could of used many other forms to express the girl trying to say something, for example “talk” instead of tell you, but of course it just wouldn’t have the same impact. “Talk” would imply it’s a two way conversation, where both ends get a say in the situation. But tell you would mean that this girl just needs to let it out of her system, she just bluntly has to say to someone what she’s feeling, maybe not waiting for any verbal response in return, but more of a physical reaction. A think this small detail makes the whole song a lot more beautiful, it’s a crucial piece of information implying how this girl’s emotions are working. I just think it’s great
