I still use my other dive computer, but I because of this video, I now also always use the Cosmiq! It’s a really neat dive computer and I love seeing the dive profiles at the end of each dive. Thanks for the video/tip! Fellow Canadian here!

Hi Alec, I recently read an article about so called "hybrid bcds" which supposingly give you the best of both wing style bcd and jacket style bcd and I was wondering if you could maybe give your opinion on these. One example of a hybrid bcd would be the Oceanic Atmos. I would appreciate a response very much and I hope you'll be able to help me out on this. Tom
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter6 жыл бұрын
I have used and sold the Atmos. It is a unique BCD since it's really a wing style or back inflate but built in a stab jacket design. Supposedly you get the advantages of a wing style and a jacket style. It seems to work really well. Again, like fins and masks, BCDs are very personal. Try to arrange a trial dive, even in a pool, before you decide if it's best for you. Alec

was seriously considering this unit until read the manual, it very specifically says not to be used as primary computer at altitude or in fresh water, seeing as I am in Alberta, it rules this computer out for me.

Aha! That's what that book is for!! I didn't see that in the book RD2 or I would have mentioned it. Maybe I was so impressed by the app interaction that I missed some other points. It's good that you saw that and I appreciate you sharing that info. Thanks. Alec Peirce

I've had the Cosmiq+ since it first came out. It has worked pretty well for me. Screen is very visible (except in very bright sunlight). I really like the strap too, because you can either use it on a bare wrist, over a thick wetsuit and glove, or hanging from a BCD d-ring (upside-down so that you can just look down or lift it up slightly to view it) -- all without changing the wrist band at all (that's why it has those two metal rungs).

achilles6312 I really appreciate that you let us know about similar computers. Very useful info! But the price difference is awfully big. As of today, 10/24/19, Cosmiq+ is $349.00, but the Oceanic Pro Plus X is about $995.00. Kind of a no-brainer for us "easy-going, clear, warm, salt water divers".

I wonder if it is something they can easily integrate into their existing computers in that they are already bluetooth compatible. Would just need a bluetooth transmitter (that works under water) and an update to their firmware.

$300 for all those features - even better than I thought! AI is a nice feature and I'm sure it will be available soon. Changes gases at depth is hardly a deal breaker. How many divers need that? How many even know what it's for? Hard to beat. Thanks for your input guys. Alec
@alaind8316 жыл бұрын
Lars where did you get it for $300 ? I do see it at 320 on aliexpress/ebay... Alec, do you think a software upgrade might support AI ? I was gonna ask them... it already has bluetooth to the phone, but didn't check what wireless Air uses... seems like a big omission. I have an older wireless computer and wonder if the Air transmitter are generic between brands (oceanic/Aeris)

There is also the aqualung i300c which does the same thing. If you need air integration, the i750TC and I450T have it.

The AQ 1300 is pretty good but not nearly the same. The LED screen alone is worth seeing and the app (FREE btw, unlike the i300) has incredible capabilities compared to the AQ Divelog. As an older diver I really like the big screen too. Thanks for sharing. Alec

Your instructor may have had some trouble with earlier computers. That's normal with new technology (you should have seen the first BCs!!). We all had problems with the early computers but they are near perfect now. Between those 2 I'd certainly lean towards Suunto. Good luck. Alec

I have a Shearwater Perdix AI. Connects via Bluetooth to PC, tablet and/or phone with the Shearwater cloud app and program. Holds 1000 dives, has integrated air, tec, trimix, rebreather, recreational and gauge mode. What I'm trying to say is that more dive computers can do these connection tricks. I guess the strong point of this described computer is the social media app. Great if you want to share all of your life online. Probably not for everybody.
@alaind8316 жыл бұрын
but it's also 1/3 the cost of a Shearwater Perdix at around $320 - that's a big difference... but missing AI option is a big downer. I won't go back. Question is are there watch style computers around that price with most/all options ? social part I'm not sure I'm sold on it.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely right David. Not for everybody. But really neat!! And just $300 too. Thanks for watching. Alec
@skrewball6 жыл бұрын
Deepblu (the social media app) is not mutually exclusive to the cosmic. You can run the perdix with it too. I guess if you didn’t want to spend the money on a perdix, you could get the cosmic and utilize the app still if you were to move up later

looking at the spec on the mobile apps looks like it only has battery for 6-7h continuous dive time (what I do on a wkd boat trip) so require nightly recharge (external usb plug for internal lithium ion battery from what I read) vs couple years on my Suunto AI cobra (very different screen) with watch battery style... Guess those big color screen drain fast...

I'm sorry to sound like a troll but this is not a video about what's new in dive computers... I am just getting certified and looking to purchase my first dive computer. I would like air integrated. I will be renting everything but my Personal Gear for a while. Do Dive shops let you hook up your hose connected Dive computer to their equipment? Is a hose connected computer a good idea if you will be renting equipment? The hose connected air integrated units seem to be more affordable than the wireless wrist air integrated units. Is there something I am not thinking about?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim. A good dive shop should allow your personal air integrated dive computer into their rental 1st stage. They should attach it for you to ensure it is properly connected, not too tight as the O-ring is what seals, not brute force. Remember to remove your computer when returning the rental. Air integrated computers are what I consider part of every divers personal gear, just like a mask, fins, snorkel. It keeps all your dive history and your more comfortable operating it than a strange rental computer or gauges. Points to remember: - When the hose is disconnected from the 1st stage, cover the end with a small zip loc bag and rubber band to protect it from getting any particles inside that tiny high pressure opening. - Depending on your eye sight, ensure the air hose length is not so short that its hard to focus on the display. - Remember even dive computers need a good rinsing (see previous videos) to keep the buttons working. Enjoy your dives and glad these videos help keep you in the sport. Alec

@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter6 жыл бұрын
Jeez, I don't think the Poseidon has nearly the features and certainly not the connectivity to your mobile. To me that's the best part of this computer. Everything goes into your mobile device so you can play with it in the app - share, edit, change settings, etc. Plus the price difference! This is much less than 1/2 the price. The Poseidon is good all right but not the same at all. Alec

reading a bunch of reviews on the Cosmiq+ (thinking of picking one as backup to my Suunto AI Cobra if/when depth gauge goes dead which is apparently common) I came across those issues - last one worries me if they haven't fixed that: * looks like price jumped to $399 (retail) thought it was $299 ? * very hard to read at surface or shallow on bright days * short battery life - might only get 4-5 dives before a recharge * must use phone to set some initial values (time, metrics, etc ) and internet ? (maybe no big deal as only done once) * most aggressive settings ('progerssive') still very conservative. read it to be similar to Sunnto I own (which is known to be maybe too conservative, with settings to make it even more conservatives!) * data is locked to their app/website. Most people will own multiple computers brands over the years so having it proprietary is no-go for many. Seen a post of someone creating a custom export to file website. * does not support deco time well should you pass your NDL by mistake/intentionally - see first comment here reefdivers.io/cosmiq-dive-computer-review/3192 that last is a safety issue. While I avoid deco now (hate waiting in mid water doing nothing) and is all I used to do when diving 40 years ago, I occasionally run into one when hunting.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alain. The price is bound to change from country to country and as it becomes more popular. Any LED readout is harder to read in bright light. That's one of the downsides to LED. But it's great underwater. Much better than an LCD screen. Many dive computers do not support decompression. It's quite common and the only reason I've been able to find is the threat of liability. That is, even with great care, decompression sickness is a real possibility if you exceed No Decom times. So manufacturers simply don't provide info beyond NoDecom limits to avoid a lawsuit.
@alaind8316 жыл бұрын
interesting. While the cobra I use isn't a tech diving deco computer, it does clearly state the deco times (in big letters) if you run over NDL - can't recall if the time shorten if you stay in the shallower but still at depth. I recall having a 13min deco time at 15ft (instead of typical optional 3min) which felt like an eternity in open water, especially in great white country :)
