When I was 6 years old back in 1976 my great grandfather handed me a Hawaiian sling he made back in the 1890s as my first spear fishing adventure began - I progressed to the point of blue water hunter before KZbin show divers spearfishing Mahi-mahi ahi and any fish in the Deep Blue
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter3 жыл бұрын
A great story and thank for sharing with me. Many spearguns, if taken care of, can be handed down to each new generation of divers with stories and experiences like yours. Take care.

We used door hinges for triggers. We made them before every trip to the beach. They would break all the time so you needed to take spares guns. Das how!

Cool. Thanks. I am pretty sure the phallic shape was intended. 8:04 That piece of wood on the mantel looks like the leg of a bed (turned sideways). Do you know what it was? It could obviously be from a piece of a house, but it is odd. Maybe near a stair, or some random area that needed a special piece. edit: Oh yeah... I am making one these Hawaiian Slings today. This video was very helpful. Thank You! That last one is Awesome. I think I'll do something like that.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter3 жыл бұрын
Don't know what wooden piece you mean, nothing I remember like this but I put so many nick-naks there who knows. Glad to help get your first sling started and good luck hunting.
@VidarrKerr3 жыл бұрын
@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter Sorry, I meant "THE " Mantel, not "ON" the mantel. That big piece of hand hewn lumber over the fireplace. I am an architect and I like interesting architectural/structural pieces from the past. If it is from mainland USA, I would say it is pre-1900, because structurally, it isn't done quite right, as they did it back then. If it is Hawaiian, it could be from anytime, but probably pre-1950.

Thanks Alec! I made one a couple of weeks ago and need to put a leash on it. Have been going out with a pole spear, but the fish seem to know how far away to be out of my reach
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter Жыл бұрын
That was my problem many, many years ago in the stone age of diving. That's why I make longer and longer spearguns. Then I got faster spearguns (air powered), then really fast ones (shoots blanks!), then another and another. You know how this ends... A

I tried today in a shallow river. Pretty bad the arrow is just too heavy with gravity holding it. It's possible but throwing a spear will do the same if it's a good spear depending on skill.
