Personally, I dont think the show is taking jabs at dyslexia as much as it is just showing the naivety of Zach. He gets reprimanded by the end, which conveyed to me, as a young watcher when it initially came out, the weight of dyslexia and just how serious of a regard it should be held in. I definitely don't think this episode should've been banned.

it's like cece in shake it up, in the first season there's an episode about her having dyslexia and how this affects her in school but doesn't make her any less smart, and then in the rest of the show she just becomes stupid

Idk I have really bad dyslexia but I always found this episode funny I didn’t really feel like they were making fun of me. I just never understood why someone would fake a learning disability because the special Ed kids always got picked on constantly. I actually feel shake it up is lowkey worse with how they treat dyslexic characters cause they made the dumb character dyslexic. I know it’s because Bella is dyslexic in real life but it was still more in poor taste to me than this episode cause Zach is more the bit of joke here not bob.
@darylesells19
@darylesells19 2 жыл бұрын
Shake It Up was the first example of that Cici character getting any other traits other than being the dumb one. I feel as if they made it so that she faked being dumb to cover up her insecurity about her dyslexia, it could’ve worked so much better. Too bad Disney feels like they need dumb characters to act as foils to smart ones.

I had the episode recorded on the DVR and, truth be told, I liked the B and C plot. If the episode aired. I would just skip the the A plot. Even during the review I skipped the clips of the A plot. As someone who has learning difference the episode is just too difficult to sit through. Honestly, the episode doesn’t do a good job of explaining that that extra time and other accommodations only give the kids with learning differences a more even playing field with those who don’t. The accommodations aren’t there to make the kids with learning differences “life’s easier”. Even with accommodations, school is still difficult. The episode doesn’t even really show how hard it can be to go through school with a learning difference. Students and even teachers will sometimes treat you different than everyone else because it. Zach and the audience needed to see the real struggle these kids go through. It’s a daily struggle. I wish the episode showed this. It could have been a really good episode, if the proper care and tact was put forth.

Okay. So, this is a thought I‘ve had for a while, because the fact that Zack‘s only seen as the dumb and lazy jerk in the show legit annoys me. I think there‘s a good chance that Zack has ADHD. He gets easily distracted, is always looking for fun things to stimulate him and has a really hard time focusing on his school work. A lot of people probably see him as someone who‘s not trying hard enough, but we‘re not really seeing things from his perspective. I hear him genuinely talk about how he is trying, but still struggling and I think of the same situation I was in at school. Now, we‘ve seen a lot of situations of him goofing off and so we‘re led to believe that he‘s just not trying. But, why is he goofing off instead of doing his work? I remember the reason I did that in school was because the work felt too hard and I much rather preferred to screw around all day instead of feeling stupid for not understanding anything. Now, he could also ask for help, but I don‘t think his support system is good enough for him to feel like he can ask for help. Both Carrie and Cody don‘t see Zack in a very good light and seem to think that Zack is genuinely an idiot. The rest of the characters seem to hold the same view of him outside of London probably. So, why would he want to ask for help from people who already see him as a lazy idiot anyway? He could get help from teachers, but he might see it as embarrassing to need the amount of help that he does. It could also be a situation where he‘s been through the whole tutoring thing already and it didn‘t do much for him. There‘s a chance that he might genuinely need an IEP. He overhears how Bob gets extra time on tests and he‘s in awe. All Zack is looking for is extra time on tests. Not a modified test. Not answers to cheat off of. Time. Out of all the things you could possibly give Zack to help him, extra time is the least unreasonable one. Again, it‘s a kid‘s sitcom, so they probably weren’t thinking about it all that much, but I can‘t help but get annoyed when Zack is showing clear signs of ADHD and is still just seen as a lazy dumbass.

I was only 4 during season 1 so I may have just forgotten it, but is it possible that scene was repurposed for a future episode that I’m forgetting? 7:33 to be completely fair and frankly honest though, chiseling and widdling are entirely different skillsets from the hammering and gluing type of woodwork, carpentry type woodwork requires math, a lot of math. whereas chiseling and widdling require an artistically inclined mind and a good mindseye to see what you're going to be doing before you do it it would be a bit like saying someone can't possibly know how to shuffle cards since they suck at poker, (because they can't count cards) it's just different skillsets =} I totally believe that this kid was really great at some parts of woodwork and god awful at others.

11:59 12:05 12:12 totally agree with you, my friend. We disabled learners do _not_ talk like 11:47. We are not wimps or pitiful losers. Just because we have learning disabilities, it doesn't mean it automatically cost us our dignity. I swear, people without LD's can be so shallow and superficial. Especially my boss. She's questioned me a few times for my mistakes and misinterpretations. And she was upset I had signed up for a one-person shift. I'll admit, I am much better with a helping hand and guide, but come on, that's no excuse for being insensitive. One of our student leader's responsibilities is organizing who works which shifts on the schedule, and my boss scolded him for not noticing I had signed up for a one-person shift. When she asked him if she thought I could do the shift, I answered for him with a firm "yes," because I felt belittled by her. She said she didn't think so, was all "I've told you not to sign up for shifts by yourself, I've been very clear about that, I don't know how much clearer I can get for you to listen" (something like, that, so I'm not perfectly quoting her), and she told me I need someone there to give me instructions and guide me. I was mad at myself for not standing up to her, but then I compensated for it. My college's disability services was hosting a program to educate and prepare high schoolers in Special Ed, who were considering enrolling here. We caterers were serving the food, and every time I saw my boss talking to a high schooler, I would immediately go over there and either a. provide whatever excuse to get her somewhere else, or b, offer _my_ help to the kid. My boss eventually concluded that I was deliberately trying to keep her away from the Special Ed students, and she insisted I tell her what was going on. I "reluctantly admitted" I was trying to prevent her from potentially saying anything offensive to the learning-disabled kids. How I wasn't sure she would be 100% respectful; that I worried she might question them if they make any honest mistakes (well, honest to disabled learners, not the general population), even if unintentionally. When she expressed her offense at such a judgmental, faithless perspective, I basically 13:18: "I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings. I was just trying to keep their feelings from getting hurt, just to be on the safe side. I mean, having a learning disability is tough, especially when others don't understand it and make the disabled feel less. They get looked down upon very easily, and I didn't want them to feel that way." I hope that made my boss feel bad. The woman who labeled and condescended gets labeled and condescended back.

7:20 As someone who hasn't watched the show in years I'm gonna make a theory Yes, Cody does suck at woodshop, but he did whatever he could to still pass his class whether it be extra credit assignments or staying after school to redo some of them with his teacher. Therefore he still got an A and his teacher had to think of *something* positive to say about Cody so they said "What a little chiseler." This is how I passed my Basic Drawing class in high school that was required for my art credit. My teacher even said that I was the literally worst artist he'd ever met and that I could never draw something good. I know drawing's hard for me but he didn't have to keep shouting at me and yanking my hand to make me draw the way he wants :( Anyways, theory and trauma dump over.

I just rewatched the whole series and I’m 21 for reference and I’ve definitely seen this banned episode many times when I was younger so their claim makes no since

This is my first time ever learning about this episode so watching this video was a bit jarring but super fascinating. For some reason I do remember watching the Chris brown ep. Makes me wonder about the other banned episodes of Disney shows.

You’re right, this episode had to have come on more than once cause I vividly remember it and I was 5 back then. So it had to have been aired at least a few times

You either didn't watch that episode of Hannah montanah you're talking about or you missed the point entirely. Thst crap about Oliver being a sugar hungry freak and dying never happened. It was imaginary. Miley and Lillie were over reacting and the entire lesson of the episode was that they should calm down learn about the problem before pulling shit and most importantly trust the person with the condition to know how to handle their own condition.

I know I did a pretty poor job of articulating what I meant in this video, so I’ll try and clear things up. What I meant to say is that they filmed a version of that episode where Miley and Lillie don’t understand diabetes at all, but they ended up having to redo the episode before it aired because it wasn’t received well, thus the episode being “banned.” The episode that we all saw on Disney Channel was the better version, at least that’s what I gathered from my research while making this video. So yes, the stuff about Oliver being a sugar hungry freak never happened in the episode that aired, it seemingly happened in the version of that episode that was scrapped. Hopefully that cleared things up and thanks for watching my video regardless!

@@AlecComes Yeah, No Sugar Sugar is the one that didn't air, but it had early-released to some video-on-demand services and the way they did it in the original cut had a myriad of inaccuracies in it that were actually so bad that some kids with diabetes who watched it cried because they felt like their favorite show was making fun of them. (I knew of the forum this came up on at the time so I heard this stuff in real time back when it happened.) The complaints got its original airing canceled and there was fallout in which at least one really annoying fan showed up to berate the parents for complaining. In both versions the basic plot from Miley and Lily is the same, but in the original there's a lot more inaccuracy and slapstick and little to no correcting from Oliver at the end. Uptight (Oliver's Alright), which premiered a year later and wasn't banned, was retooled specifically to fix stuff like that.

I feel like a lot of the xenophobic jokes that Disney made could've worked better if they wherent xenophobic and possibly racist but instead jokes about the then known as "health nut hippy parents types" who where into conspiracy theories, in other words antivaxers. because I remember seeing those types get made fun of in the late 2000s, 2010s even and frankly rubbing a fat chicken on your chest reminds me heavily of those posts about potatoes sucking out toxins and turning black like sure it might be kinda shitty to make fun of people for being duped, and terrified of medical staff, but basically anything is better than xenophobia and racism
