One moment I always think about is when Roman makes up the happy story of going camping with his dad. When Logan says he doesn't remember that, Roman says something like "oh, that was Connor, actually." Seems like he was, in some ways, there for his younger siblings even more than their father ones. Connor is a great contrast to the other kids. Like Kendall, he was the "eldest son", but unlike Kendall, he chose not to pursue "birthright as eldest. Like Shiv, he has a relationship with someone based on convenience and interest, but Unlike Tom and Shiv, Connor and Willa are more honest and communicate with each other. And like Roman, he was something of an ignored/forgotten child, but unlike Roman, who has made the company and his father the centre of his life, Connor is trying to do something different entirely. I think the important distinction here is that Connor can love someone else, he has repeatedly shown that he does love willla (for example at shivs wedding where he wanted her in the pictures) and he is capable of sometimes putting her first, even if their relationship is transactional. Whereas the other kids just cannot love anyone else - Ken doesn’t love his kids, shiv does not love Tom, and even Roman, who was desperately trying to feel something for Gerri, still shitcanned her at his fathers behest - I don’t think Connor would have done that, he is willing to stand up for himself over Willa. So even though he is a self interested chump, he is the least selfish and most human of the siblings

Great essay, thoroughly enjoyed it, thank you. Alan Rucks performance through the 4 seasons has been truly remarkable amidst an incredibly strong ensemble. He absolutely nails the mildly eccentric, scatty yet focused derivative sibling. I think what makes him most intriguing is the fact that the show “doesn’t need him” as a character…and yet, there he is. I’ve loved him from the beginning for this very reason. And kudos to the writers for having the confidence to write him in…I’m sure HBO execs cast a weary eye over Alan’s salary to what must, on paper at least, be seen as a superfluous cast accessory. Truth be told, I’d watch an entire show dedicated to Conor.

It always felt to me that Connor inherited some tenderness( and kinda, normality?) from his mother’s side ; but he was so isolated and neglected emotionally while growing up in extreme, disorienting privilege. He grew up very fast in specific ways but is emotionally developmentally arrested in other ways. He extends some paternal-like affection to his younger siblings, but he doesn’t really fit in anywhere with the Roys. He’s not anyones father figure, he’s the kids brother but he doesn’t feel like their sibling. Connor is awful, but has never fit anywhere. His happiness comes from embracing that. He seems to have worked out a lot of his pain around validation and approval this season. So much of Connors abandonment issues are on display in his relationship with Willa, but they’ve sort of grown together and have a successful friendship and marriage. They’re each other’s family now.

Thank you for doing a Connor video! One consideration i might throw out is that, historically plenty of men have had their wives institutionalized for hysteria, so while its entirely possible that connors mom had significant mental issues, its also entirely possible that he just didn't want to deal with her anymore - she was maybe feisty or demanding or a problem in some wau - so he locked her up. The message of this video is perfectly encapsulated by the fact that a lot of the comments are only quoting Connor's lines people have made jokes out of.

I hope Alan Ruck gets paid the same amount per episode as the other siblings….obviously Connors mother wasn’t as monstrous as his siblings mom…and half siblings do sometimes get forgotten……it’s sad that him and Willa have the best relationship

I'm sure he gets paid the same because Alan Ruck was a more familiar name at the start and probably has a good agent

@@annabarr1304 yea I would say Brian Cox was on the huge name and then Alan Ruck and Kieran Culkin are in the same level fame wise I know Ruck has been around longer

Conner is the child who is capable of being happy, the others will never feel complete.

I am beginning to wonder if the entire cast is 100% method acting through this entire show... Let that idea sink in, then make a video about it!
