@David Einhorn I haven't really seen a show with such a rich and well characterized cast. No movie or show that I've seen comes even close to matching the richness of cast that we see in Monster. I've seen about 500 movies, 600 anime, read about 200 books and watched 20 TV series and nothing even comes close to Monster in terms of characters. Edit: Mushishi is the only one imo that has characters as good as monster

Grimmer told us one of his lost memories, his childhood friend. The name was Adolf Reinhart. He was such a good kid, he loved to draw, bugs, and hot cocoa. One time, when they're live together in Kinderheim 511 and Grimmer got sick, Reinhart shared his favorite hot cocoa with Grimmer. The bad guy Roberto was the adult Adolf Reinhart. Sadly, Roberto didn't remember much about the good parts of his childhood. And throughout the series especially after they're adult, they never reunited. If that happened, Grimmer might be able to change Roberto's life.

Grimmer as a character is almost a microcosm of the shows thematic core. The external conflict of Johan and Tenma, or more precisely nihilism and compassion, gets internalized in Grimmer who shows compassion to everyone while not feeling anything himself. It's quite poetic, actually. "I think I must have figured out how the show ended. The Magnificent Steiner, he probably, became human again." It's this quote that really stuck with me. I think the overall message of Monster is that love beats nihilism. When Nina and Tenma forgave Johan at the end, Johan regained his humanity, just like Grimmer regained his humanity after making connections with all sorts of people. It's the same conflict on different levels.

I wouldn't say that Johan "regains his humanity" His sister forgave him, and Tenma tells him his real name. That doesnt change what he is or had done. At no point do we see Johan do anything good, nor do we see him show any remorse or regret for his horrific and endless list of crimes.

Also, both of those reactions involve his *sister* , his "sad eyes" during one thing his sister said to him is not proof he feels deep remorse for the things or has truely changed. I'm willing to say he might feel sad hurting his sister, or feel saddened over losing to Tenma, but that's it. He is still the fucking Devil, and nothing he does or says even begins to wash that blood from his hands.

I always liked how Grimmer would open his eyes only when he was either feeling or close to feeling genuine extreme emotion. Like when he told Tenma that all people carry their own sins, or saving that boy from jumping off the bridge, & also finally confronting Franz Bonaparte. It's almost like the reason he walks around with his eyes closed is because of his self perceived lack of care, and just stumbles from place to place, and then much like anger, his emotional dam bursts in situations that reflects his own life.

An important detail many forget is that steiner never came out during Grimmers last fight, he did it all by himself using his anger. Its significant cuz he finally found his own emotions and his own strength, the kid didn't need steiner anymore he had finally grown strong to face his problems by himself and overcome them. I think that, pretty fittingly would've been the last episode of the show after all as Grimmer says u can trust no one in the world but your own self.

Beautiful work Alec, seriously unexpected BUT undoubtedly welcome, thank you so much. It’s made my day. Grimmer’s an absolute favorite character from the series, because of how he embodies the most potent emotions capable within humans, be it subtle or feral, through a process of uncovering layers gradually by his interactions with other people. I firmly believe he is THE definition of a “warm person”. He was a beacon of light for Tenma, Detective Suk, the lost soul of a child and the children in the orphanage at Prague. The kindness he showed was the silver lining in their path of miseries. When Tenma was in utter denial of his actions(shooting a person), he convinced him that everyone’s sins, despite being irredeemable, shouldn’t just foster passivity. He bolstered an insecure Detective Suk, saved his life and even rescued that child from the brink of suicide. Gintoki from Gintama (another goat series) mentioned a phrase to Kagura’s father about how people who don’t have the things they wish for, usually understand them better than the ones who do. I feel Grimmer’s actions are a prime reflection of this idea. How Grimmer also portrays food as something that nourishes not only the body but the soul from within is pristine pure wholesomeness that I believe is unmatched. On the other end Roberto, despite being Grimmer’s childhood friend, took a completely polar path and as such had Grimmer’s inverse effects on people they had mutually met, including Tenma and Detective Lunge. Their individual life experiences amounted to them leaning in such divergent ways. Grimmer’s death hit home on a visceral, emotional level that I hadn’t experienced in any show prior to initial viewing. It had left me speechless, and let’s just say it did not sit well with my mental health. "I think I must have figured out how the show ended. Grimmer and Dieter were my favorite characters in the series. When Grimmer said before his death " I am finally truly sad about my son's death". It made me really emotional. His character was incredible. He didn't feel anything but still something drove him to find out what had taken everything normal and good from his life. When he repeatedly asked tenma "what should I feel at this moment? What kind of expression should I make?" It broke my heart. He was incredibly kind for a person who felt and understood no part of it.

Grimmer knew people more than people knew themselves and helped them every time but he couldn’t feel like them. I guess his 511 experience made him recognize monster in other people, and while Johan exploited this to bring the inner monster out, Grimmer helped other people defeat their inner monsters. He’s a warm person, I’m glad his Steiner let him feel like a human again.

Just finished watching this series for the first time last week and now it’s in my top 5 anime series of all time. Been watching your character analysis vids and they are on point! Grimmer was my favorite character as I felt he was the balance between Tenma’s compassion for human life and Johan’s despair and nihilistic views of it. I cried like crazy when he died and him finally grieving the death of his son right before he passed away made it all the more heart-wrenching.
