When you really look at it, the theme of humanity really comes around like a circle, the answer to edwards choice in the end was his friends, he lowered himself from a alchemist to a human, in fact he didn’t lower himself. That’s all he ever was. Accepting that fact is what and embracing his humanity is what made him beat truth. And in contrast to that. That’s what made father ultimately fail in the end.

When I'm bored I sometimes like to look into the deeper meaning of characters in anime's and shows, like Bill Cipher from Gravity Falls, Bradley from FMAB and literally all of Evangelion no matter how much you try you will never understand these characters truly, they represent something more vague and deep that you make your interpretation of.

What I like about Brotherhood is how it celebrates life through and through. Relatively few named characters actually die in the story, and they make a big deal out of it every time. There are many stories that have more characters die more often - and that isn’t inherently bad at all. But Brotherhood is consistent tonally and thematically with the way it treats the life of each character in the story.

The death of Maes Hughes was such a big deal because he was such a nice, hard working man who was very smart and never stopped working to help his friends no matter what, and he was funny and endearing with how much he loved his wife and daughter and would do anything for them. His death carries over with his best friend Roy Mustang’s pain and anger over his loss and wanting vengeance for it.

I think that can still be achieved if more characters die. As long as each death is treated as huge (like FMA does) then that theme can still be maintained. I think that one more major character should have died to make the stakes more believable, and as long as they gave it importance then it would've worked fine.

Fullmetal Alchemist is just so deeply human. It’s about love, about hope, about how humans are deeply flawed but there’s so much more than just that. At its core, it’s so simple. It manifests in many different ways with many different characters, but it all comes down to this humanity that feels so genuine and true to life. It’s such a simple theme! And “people are good and hope is good” aren’t unique concepts in fiction at all! And yet somehow Fullmetal Alchemist has this profound effect on me. Hiromu Arakawa your brain is so big I just cannot believe how good this story is.

@@stevenpeeckford5999 jsut lioke the concept of Truth and fate in the 'real world' huh? (i use it in coy quoets beucase i consider such things one and the same) Truth is acutaulyl ecstatic, and happy to be 'bested', but it's not about bested, becuase both Truth and Edward are both 'winners' here, it's beyond the scale of winning or losing, to Truth seeing Edward actualise and realise and ascend beyond his perosnan limitations is the greatest joy that a metaphysical being that representts 'everyting' can have --> Truth is in literal joyful disbelief that *Edward* figures 'it out all out.' Even though Edward has all the pieces of hte puzzle together, Truth almost coyingly goads Edward with alchemy, despite knowing the answer, to which Edward replies theres nothign wrong with just being a normal human. It's utter beauty that FMa:b contrasts it PERFECTLY by showing Father's response to his Truth, it's desperate 'What did I do wrong?' there is no universe Father would ever critically reallise the error of his ways, and that' something Truth scornfully shakes their head at... When faced with the consequences to not kill his enemy (Kimblee), he didnt even hesitate and used his own life force to heal his wounds. He didnt let others take this on for him, he saw that it was his choice to not kill, so he had to accept the consequences of that choice himself.

Edward Elric is the personification and center of the theme of humanity in the Fullmetal Alchemist series, he has negative qualities of anger, arrogance, and pride, but balances them out with his strength in forgiveness, understanding, and perseverance to fight for the sake of his loved ones. In the beginning he hid his pain over his mother Trisha’s death with his anger and stubbornness and tried to use his gifted intelligence in alchemy to commit the ultimate taboo by reviving her, but his arrogance blinded him and resulted into him losing two of his limbs and his younger brother Alphonse losing his entire body. Ed never properly grieved over his loss and used his alchemy as an excuse to hide from it. He believed that alchemy was the ultimate science, the end-all, be-all of life. Throughout Ed’s journey we see him trying to redeem himself and get Al’s body back. We see his strength by him never giving up on his humanity by refusing to kill, even going so far as refusing to use a philosopher’s stone because he doesn’t want to take advantage of trapped human souls. There have been times where he’s wanted to give up, but Al and even other characters like Winry and Roy Mustang have had to get him to snap out of it and keep moving forward. They’re there to have his back no matter what. In the end, Ed keeps moving, because everything he does, he does for them, especially Al. Throughout the course of his journey we see Ed selfishly trying to do everything by himself because he doesn’t want to burden anyone else, but then he gets confronted by characters like Solf J. Kimblee, Scar, May Chang, Ling Yao, Olivier Mira Armstrong and Greed who have their own specific goals they want to set out to accomplish and have different views on the world and life. Which ends up causing him to question his own ways of thinking. Ed has to learn to stop being selfish and allow to let other people in because the situations at stake are much bigger than just him and Al. Like for example his father Van Hohenheim, he’s had a grudge against him for the longest time since he believed Hohenheim had abandoned him and Al after Trisha died, but once he realized why he did it and what he did it for, he accepted Hohenheim’s help in the fight to save the world and eventually forgave him and accepted him as his father. By the conclusion of the story, Ed manages to overcome his own pride, which makes sense seeing as how he was the one who ended up defeating the homunculus Pride, thanks to the help of Kimblee no less. His arc comes full-circle once he sees all the sacrifices his friends have made to help him defeat Father and save the world, and when he sees how they’re willing to do anything they can to help him get Al back, he manages to let his arrogance and pride go in order to save Al’s life by sacrificing his own ability to use alchemy. Edward finally accepts that his friends and family are what make him strong and give him purpose, and he also finally sees himself for what he truly is, a human, a simple human who couldn’t save a little girl. God this anime is magnificent in pretty much every way. In my personal opinion, it has something for pretty much everyone, even folks who usually don't like anime. The fights and action maintain a consistent power level among characters and actually serve the story rather than just pure spectacle. The characters are absolutely fantastic and easy to get attached to. They all serve a function being just as complex or simple as they need to be. These two points allow more casual viewers to just sit back and enjoy the show. However, Brotherhood is far from shallow and has more than enough thematic, philosophical, ideological, and spiritual crunch to keep more passionate viewers engaged for years after viewing. It covers so many ideas with just enough depth to say something about all of them. Some characters can open up a Pandora's Box of questions and debates (Wrath and Hohenheim being arguably the best examples). I just absolutely adore this show. Sure some other anime may be able to outperform it in specific areas, like Death Note having an even better score, but FMA: Brotherhood outperforms almost all of them as a complete product. I would also argue it is the best introductory anime

IMO, FMAB should have had one more major death of a non-villain. We had Greed, Fuu, Buccaneer and Hohenheim but it still felt like a bit of plot armor, one more should have died. Maybe someone Olivier. As long as each death is treated as huge (like FMA does) then that theme can still be maintained. I think that one more major character should have died to make the stakes more believable, and as long as they gave it importance then it would've worked fine.

9:48- A creature that didn't realize his humanity due to not looking like one. So he took on a form that was human- one that was on the surface- a means to be more acceptable to the sight of those he wished to deceive/use, but also to fulfill that desire. His paradoxical apathy towards humanity and insecurity over not being in control, however, leads to him rejecting that humanity and revert temporally into a more humanoid yet one-dimensional version of himself- a multi-eyed fallen angel that is hypocritical and mocking. Yet when he finally absorbs Truth/God, out of all the forms he could conceivably take to be a threat- something eldritch or incomprehensibly godlike- he still chooses a human form. Father/Dwarf in the Flask subconsciously wanted to be human, but his sheer vanity and issues left him not appreciating this, making him more of a monster pretending to be human. Unlike others like the Chimera and the Suits display humanity is in the heart, not appearance- something Father not fundamentally understood.

I don't know why anime reviewers said it is just a plain good anime ranging from 6/10 and 7/10 max. But to me it deserves a spot on top 3 anime of all time. Why? It offers great plot and story telling, great twist and little to no plot holes, great explanation for power scalings, and most of all character developments.

If human lives are so valuable, according to equivalent exchange, doesn't that make it the best alchemy ingredient? It's pretty easy to sacrifice a human for how much you can get out of it.

Makes sense but in the end the universe can't handle any transaction at all, that's how GOATed humanity is (or CAN BE, when we're not being morons)
@loczek1965
@loczek1965 3 жыл бұрын
Well only if you don't understand what the show is trying to say. Basically, at the end Ed and Al prove that equivalent echange is not a universal law, because human life is priceless, and when it was used in alchemy as philosopher's stone it couldn't make up for what was lost. Human life once lost is impossible to get back, and the show goes out of it's way to show how it impacts everyone, with how much weight each death has in the the show. This also means, that people can live their lives in a way, where they give more than they recieve, thus adding good to the world. The mindset you described is quite literally the mindset of the villains.
