I think the Shinigami's view of humanity's history can pretty much be summed up by the quote, "the more things change the more things stay the same". Each generation thinks the same, that they have all the answers and they can't possibly be stupid enough to repeat the same mistakes as the generations before them. That however is proven to be false time and time again. Man's pride forever blinds them to the truth and limits their growth to live up to their potential.

This is why I always loved the ending of Death Note. Light was so consumed by power, firmly believing that he became god. But, from the beginning to the very end, he was at the mercy of a Shinigami's boredom. When Ryuk got bored of him, he just killed him off, like a child throwing away a toy.

What I find the most intriguing is that Ryuk could see how long Light would live the whole time, Light was taking about reigning as the God of the new world and Ryuk was just seeing his death date coming up in a few years
@DH-fu7bx

@@Big_Steve11 I don’t think it works that way. If light had no lifespan left then Ryuk can’t take lights lifespan. I think Ryuk cut lights life short, thus feeding of the remaining years light would’ve lived. Also when Rem sacrificed herself for Misa, Rem’s life years transferred to Misa. Yet Misa still died a premature death.

I also saw Ryuk as some kind of viewer to this series just like our selves, he is one of the very few that could see the real story and actions that were taken and yet be amazed how those actions would affect its world and characters just like we did. He saw changes in both Lights and L's personalities (their character growth so to say) and could not hold back but just to be amazed by it, just like all of us did. At the very end, when it was ready to be over, he really felt like he was sad about how it was ending but still glad for this journey (story) that he got a chance to see and change his view of the world at least by a tiny bit.

I think all of the points in this video are amplified as well in the recent Death Note one shot. Ryuk drops his Death Note again into the human world to see if something interesting and different will happen this time. While the way Minoru uses the Death Note is VERY different to Light, Minoru's fate ends the same way as Light...and is only something minimal in entertainment for Ryuk. Watching humans struggle for power whether it be a single man, or a whole nation, sturs nothing in Ryuk because he's seen it all before due to Shinigami living forever as long as they write in names. It's sad, but at the same time I imagine Ryuk gets a significant amount of pleasure toying with humans in the same way an RPG player gets in acting evil in certain routes(ala Undertale or Dragon Age). Amazing video!

Yeah, I 100% agree with this! To add on, I feel that The shinigami were just a great outlet for the theme of existentialism that was prevalent throughout Death Note. Light was a very driven and determined individual, and everything he did was to achieve his greater purpose/goal in life. But Ryuk's presence and his apathy towards everything going on in the world, despite how insane/impactful it would be for humans at the time, went to show in many ways the meaningless in life. Combine this with the concept that all humans go to Mu after they die (regardless of their actions) and it creates a heavy and depressing theme of existentialism and humanity

One thing I always wonder about the death Note itself, though I doubt we have/ will ever get the answer, is do it's victims remain cognisant and self aware until the end? Of course the heart attacks are one thing, but the notebook can literally dictate your actions in advance if they're written out, provided the actions you were given were something you could plausibly do/ think of. If the actions you're provided with are possible but out of character, would you have doubts about them while carrying them out anyway? So, and this is the example that always makes me wonder about this, when Naomi Misora walks away to "commit suicide some place nobody will find her", does she think these actions she's taking are her own? Has she just decided to die "of her own will", like a decision she made for herself, because it said so the notebook? Or is she acting in accordance with the Death Note, but is still consciously aware on any level that this wasn't what she should be doing, or what she'd wanted to do? Light straight up tells her he's Kira the second before the note's given time strikes, so does her mind still think about telling someone about that, only to either decide against it, or simply not act on it? L outright say's she was strong and wasn't the type to take her own life, if so, did she retain some feeling of "what am I doing?" as she walked to her death?
@Deep_phobias
@Deep_phobias 3 жыл бұрын
I think its implied that they do have at least some sort of cognizance of their situation, the scene where she is walking away to her death you can see she's pained and surprised by light being Kira, even though at that time she was told she was being controlled by the death note.

This helped me click one of the disconnects I had with Ryuk's character. I remember him being rather boring (certainly when put against Light and the detectives), but that's basically the whole point of his character: he's bored out of his skull and gave the Death Note to a human to spice up life. He gets more animated about apples than almost anything else because it's something exciting and new for him. Will keep this in mind when I revisit the series!

Dude you make some of the greatest and fascinating videos ever! I really find it hard to investigate and layout such themes in a proper order, all the more making me more impressed. I can't believe you don't have subs tho. You totally deserve more. That being said... perhaps a name change would help? Something along the lines of "anime philosophy" or something that might pop up to people more easily when they are searching the subject. I once searched similar titles but I only saw your channel after alot of digging into the subject. Anyways, I really love your work and waiting to see more. All the best to you.

Very glad you enjoy the videos and thanks for the kind words! Having said that, while I do appreciate it, I’m a little puzzled by your suggestion. My videos gets tons of traction, and I have more than 200k subscribers which is a hell of a lot and on the higher end of channels who make similar content. The channel is doing really well and has been doing really well for a long time, so I see no need for a name change like that. “Anime Philosophy” isn’t really accurate to what I talk about and it’s also pretty generic IMO. If I ever do change the name, it’ll be to shorten it to “Alec,” or “Aleczander,” I think. So thank you, but hopefully that explains why I don’t really need to do anything like that.

One of my major hang-ups with your glorious content, is the fact that in most cases you pull quotes directly from the audio of the media. I mean certainly the quotes are needed. But I listen to your content. You point of view and dissection of said media is what's important to me. So when I'm listening to a string of consciousness in a language I can understand, then suddenly you pull the japanese audio and expect me to know what I'm hearing. I get lost. Your content is marvelous. I used to eat it up. Today's adventure was spectacular. Since I could follow it. Thank you for doing what you do. It is an absolute service.

I’m not really sure I understand the problem, or how you get lost. When I make points, I need to substantiate myself with evidence from the source. Otherwise I’m just speaking baselessly and people are required to take what I say at face value. I dunno, I appreciate the kind words very much but this hang-up you mention seems highly dramatized to me. You said this video was great because you could follow it but I included a clip in this one as well, so it's no different. And even if I hadn't, I just can't seem to understand how you get lost or are unable to follow a video simply because I add an audio clip to prove my points. The vast majority (me included) think that the added clips improve the videos. They keep things fresh and variable, they substantiate my points, they add atmosphere and weight to the video and they prevent me from simply just talking the entire way through, which would surely get boring if I did it all the time without any variation. I appreciate the feedback but my video essays often require something like that so I won’t be changing this. Sorry, but I think to do so would be lessening the presence of the story in my videos, which undercuts a big part of why I do this.

Even more so when I don't have to stop the audio mid way, rewind it and read the subtitles in order to catch the entire gist of what you're saying. I listen to your content in the shower, while I'm doing dishes, driving to and from work. But maybe that is just me. I never meant offense. Nor did I wish to waste your time. This was certainly not meant to be an attack on my part. I hope your day goes well. You are an inspiration sir. I'm honored that you took the time to respond.

I see - the problem is that my videos are intended to be watched, not listened to in the shower. I'm humbled by anyone who desires to listen to or watch them, but they are definitely meant to be watched and listened to, not just listened to, so yeah if you get rid of the visual component then you'll miss things. That's why I do visual editing and that's why they aren't podcasts, lol. This is just an explanation for my reasoning - like I said, I'm grateful that anyone is interested in consuming my content in any regard, and I'm glad that you enjoy the channel!

Ryuk's ending monologue clearly implies he grew fond of Light in their time together.

I disagree. As I mentioned in the video, he was fond of their time together and the fun that Light provided him with. But he wasn’t fond of Light as a person.

@@AleczandxrI would agree, had Ryuk not taken care to specifically write Minoru Tanaka's name under Light Yagami's name in his death note. Ryuk may have been fond of Light Yagami, and respected Minoru, but he doesn't elevate humans to be the same as Shinigami

Marvelously on-point as always. Thanks for your time once again. The only time it ever steers away from this is in the Japanese Live-Action Film Diptych*. There, the ending is intrinsically more hopeful than either Anime or Manga as a hero prevails with his own wit, and we see a far more optimistic view of the future from those that survive as a result. I think I'm personally going to delve into it again and ponder the differences after watching this; once more I'm very grateful for your insights this day. *one story published in two halves - much like the full story of Death Note is, after a fashion. Disagree on the transactional relationship. Ryuk cared in the sense that Light was the only human that could give him his fun. If you replace fun with love, it becomes evident that this the only way a normal shiningami could and should love
@Aleczandxr
@Aleczandxr 3 жыл бұрын
That’s not true or evident at all. Shinigami are capable of love in a traditional sense. Look at Rem, or the story of the one far in the past who was cursed due to love. It’s very rare, but it has been known to happen. Ryuk’s entire demeanor and final monologue speak of someone who very much enjoyed, but never cared for Light. Conflating this need for entertainment with a Shinigami’s “version” of love is not only misrepresenting Ryuk, but undercutting the relationship between Rem and Misa.
