Thanks for sharing your knowledge/talent. You are a great teacher, so easy to listen to and follow along with. My 13 year old son has an interest in making knives, wooden handles, and different types of sheaths. He would eventually like to sell them. His dad helps him with the metal working, I do woodworking and sewing/knitting as my hobbies so I am trying to help him with the handles and sheaths and your tutorials have been/will be a lot of help to all of us. Since all 3 of us are definite beginners and learning as we go we can use all the help we can find! If anyone has any other tips, tricks or even other creators channels that might also help please let us know! Thank you again for sharing your time and knowledge! 😊

Very nice video. Here’s a hint I found a while back that works very well. Instead of drilling my holes, I put a finishing nail in my drill press with a sharpened edge. That makes nice holes without removing any material so that they close up on the stitches. The best of both worlds
@brianwhitelaw7483
@brianwhitelaw7483 3 жыл бұрын
I should have said a sharpened point instead of edge. Finishing nails are not actually perfectly pointed. I just smoothed the point out on my 2 x 72 grinder

Learning more here... re the welt, blade portion vs guard portion. Makes sense! The minor details like cutting the 'ramp' at the angle so the knife can be easily placed is gold... those type of tips is what I enjoy about your vids. @@Aleeknives You'd be amazed at the amount of little hints that I catch on your vids.... yes, others make vids as well, but I wouldnt worry about redundancy. What I like about your vids is you explain not only the larger picture but the nuances of the steps and for me, when both perspectives are explained it gives an idea behind the thought process on the artistry of the piece.

The only thing I can add is I always leave a drain hole at the tip of the sheath. Same for Kydex. Also I groove out the inside for the belt loop so the stitches won’t get cut from the blade. Im left handed but every sheath is cross draw. That way my firearm is on the left side. And when I carry a shotgun/rifle it doesn’t wack my knife.

I have tried but until you get real good at punching your holes what will happen is that your holes will be in the groove on the front but will not all make it into the groove on the back. sometimes your holes wander a little, if the holes don't all land in the groove it looks like a mistake

Hi Again. Thank you for your videos, they have inspired me to make the sheaths for the knives I make. I am part way through my first sheath, following your guidance. I do have a question. When you draw round the blade, on the sheath itself then make a mark half an inch wider, for the stitching and glueing; is there a reason why you don’t use the offcut for your welt. At this stage it seems to make sense to use the offcut as it (I believe) should have the same profile as the blade? No criticism, just trying to learn
@DonMorganSeawolf
@DonMorganSeawolf Жыл бұрын
Interesting video. Comments are ; Beveling needs to be done before stitching. Belt loop needs to be sewn on before the body of the sheath. A weep hole needs to be utilized at the point before a complete stitch is done. Otherwise, a very good video.
