Please, don’t regret it. As someone who is intersex, this is the first time I’ve ever heard someone disclose that information publicly, and I surprised myself by how emotional my reaction was. My parents withheld that information from me indefinitely, presumably out of shame, and put me through countless extraordinarily painful surgeries as a child that I never quite understood. I only found out the truth from a fertility doctor when I was trying to have a child with my wife. We were eventually successful without any intervention, but it was a profoundly traumatic experience for me. I never thought I’d be “that person” commenting on how impactful a KZbin video was for me, but here I am, and thank you.

Can I ask for your help with something? Obviously your choice, feel free to say no or ignore, it is not your job to educate people and all that. I have been trying to explain to my mother that "There are only two genders, and that's from your XX and XY chromosomes," bullshit is not the case. She has not responded to the separation of gender expression and sex (even though we have a trans person in the family who was essentially bullied into detransitioning), historical context, since she thinks trans people is this brand new thing vs the gender binary being defined since the paleolithic era, religious context from her precious bible since the Torah includes 8 genders, ect. I am going to try to explain intersex to her. I am good with science, she got an engineering degree but is an antivaxxer and denies climate change and other things. I'm not really sure how to approach it, aside from helping her understand that the percentage of intersex people is about the same as redheads, as there are a bunch in our family, so I think that will help. I know there is a large spectrum. I saved a youtube short of an intersex person who presents as female with XY chromosomes without having any surgery done, who made the video for that kind of purpose as a visual aid. If you feel comfortable, since I imagine you have come out to some people, like a best friend or a partner, how do you explain intersex to a layperson? Again, you can tell me to fuck off or not respond at all. I've just desperately been trying to fix my shitty parents as much as I can. I can't make them accept me for being bi, that will never happen. They think it is vile. But I worry about what they do when they encounter trans people out in the world. I only came out to get them to stop bullying a gay person that they welcomed into their home. Trying my best I guess.

@@darkermatter125.35 I'm very proud of you for trying so hard to try and educate her! It's not at all easy trying to explain the science and percentage behind intersex individuals to others. What I've found over the years is that if somebody doesnt want to believe intersex people are real they wont, no matter how many diagrams exist otherwise. Witb her coming from a strong religious and anti-vaxx belief system scientific diagrams and statistics might not be enough. Even with my friends that are less old fashioned with their thinking still cant wrap their head around what being intersex is when I explain. While its important to try and educate others for the safety of others, there comes a point when it comes clear a person will never see your explanations as valid in the slightest. Best of luck! I wish I had better advice, but I can pull up all the diagrams, examples and statistics i can get my hands on and still am faced with the disbelief your mother also holds. Wishing you can find the way to reach her, but don't be harsh on yourself if you can't, okay? It makes me really happy that you ars trying to advocate on behalf of trans people!

The issue is that infants cannot consent and unless leaving the anatomy intact is actively endangering the child, its always better to wait and ask the child what it wants with its own body, because that's what respecting bodily integrity means. Surgeries come with complications and leave scar tissues and the risk of the doc or parents being wrong is too high & comes at a massive cost

@@testacalsit’s called bodily autonomy. children don’t have the rights to their own bodies. forcing intersex babies to go through surgery to make them fit into the sex binary is just the inception of the dehumanization they’ll face as a child growing up in the world. cutting off the sixth finger of an infant would ALSO be wrong btw. if i don’t like that my baby was born with a big nose, can i just get them a rhinoplasty? or do you only think performing unnecessary surgical procedures on children is okay when it’s to “fix” something society deems strange (aka a sixth finger or an intersex trait).

Nope. Aleksa is a man bc he says he is a man and feels like that's the identity that feels right for him. When born, I assume his birth cert says male. Hes a male that had an internal ovary. So its very likely that he is what in animal life would be called a chimaera, so XY/XX chimaerism, so a result of a twin, a girl and a boy zygote fused together in utero. Another possibility would be that aleksa has swyer syndrome (i think that's how it's written) xx chromosomes but the gene for the SrY gene for him might have been expressed a bit late, so the body started to partially feminise and then the gene triggers the gland in your brain to tell the predecessor of the gonads to make testosterone to virilize him.

Honestly a really interesting story to hear. So many cases of intersex status being withheld are like, completely un-needed surgery just being done to normalise rather than needed care. While this is definitely a necessary surgery. Australia is actually a little ahead of other places with regards to intersex rights with the ACT having banned non-medically needed surgeries on intersex kids. Plenty of intersex variations don't get caught at all because unless something goes wrong there isn't a need to, for instance, ultrasound the testicles looking for an ovary etc.

I'm not intersex however I was diagnosed as an adult with PCOS. PCOS is a hormone imbalance that affects about one in 10 women. This condition is associated with increased levels of two hormones in the body, insulin and androgens (male-type hormones) - that cause symptoms such as absent or irregular periods, excessive facial and body hair, pimples, weight gain and challenges with fertility. I can't stand people who use the "It's basic biology" argument when biology isn't simple at all. People don't have any say in whether they were born intersex or with conditions which give them the features of the opposite sex, It does not make them the opposite sex or transgender.

This is certainly a controversial take but: some people in the medical community consider PCOS part of the intersex spectrum because of the increased androgens. Intersex conditions fall into three broad and overlapping categories: physical (eg a boy born with XY chromosomes but with genitals incongruent to his sex), genetic (eg a girl with XXY chromosomes who is born female and goes through typical female puberty anyway), and hormonal (eg a girl with XX chromosomes who goes through early adrenarche - the androgen part of puberty - and has a severely delayed or reduced 'female part of puberty', so goes through typical male puberty only). So some people with PCOS consider themselves intersex, though most don't

Wild enough intersex is wayyy more common than people think. It’s about as common as being redhead but its also a spectrum. Majority of people will never know it their entire life. And doctors typically don’t do chromosome testing, its just a guess based on the most obvious features at birth. You may never know until you have some medical complication until a case like alexa, or show no signs at all. Assigned sex, especially in the west ignores the 3+ other sex combinations natural in biology. Its more societal influence than anything

@@Man-Handle i’m from sweden and we have a shitton of regulation and laws to follow so it’s very unlikely that they would do false reporting and call police. There’s actually more laws and routines that favour parents / childrens right to their original family than not which actually has been causing some issues with not always being able to reach out to them in time. Either way it’s awful you had to experience that and I hope that social work gets better globally. There’s unfortunately alqays going to bee good and bad social workers like good or bad doctors or any other field. I’m very aware of these things and would rather criticise openly than follow blindly. I know a lot of social workers since my dad is one (my mom was the one who was abusive) and i hear a lot about how well clients are doing because they actually care about their wellbeing and adapt how they work to the need of each person (specifically this is in the field of adult addiction and homelessness). My dads clients have made huge progress in their journey and gone from severe addiction and homelessness to having their own apartment contracts and such. They also often tell him how they appreciate it and that he’s the only one they trust. It’s incredibly inspiring and it’s the sort of social work i want to do. Other than clients he works hard to change his workplace and to support coworkers. He is an anticapitalist leftist and has many years of experience with organising his workplaces against bullying, unfair conditions and protecting clients. When you put effort into understanding social theory and politics it will be easier to know what to fight for and unfortunately not everyone is aware of those things.

13:55 So we actually don’t really have much idea on how diverse the sex “binary” (spectrum) is since it’s all been taboo completely until now, essentially. Even today it’s still myth and legend until the unenlightened stumble across someone’s story or be a close confidant of someone who happens to be intersex. Doctors still make subjective calls based on external genitalia in most/all births. There isn’t really another option. Slowly, third options are being introduced, the transgender movement has been pivotal in securing rights for other identities or people with intersex conditions. Since chromosomal tests are expensive, they’re only done if deemed necessary, which isn’t often, so there’s no telling how many people are truly intersex in regards to chromosomes. Its disgusting how doctors have gone decades, centuries operating on infants/children without there being a medical need, coercing any concerned parents and the child typically would only find out years later, sometimes due to complications. Butchering underdeveloped bodies for aesthetics and gender norms without informing the parents (in regards to pros/cons, risks, severity, and consequences) or child, even withholding the record of what procedure and why from medical records. It’s been made illegal now in some places, but it’s still a huge problem and genuine human rights violation (in my opinion). I don’t blame terrified parents making pressured decisions in crisis then being ashamed or not wanting to burden the child, but they deserve to know asap. I do blame doctors who would let their own bias and whatnot sway them, but more so the societies and cultures that instilled the idea that cutting up functional parts of children without informed consent or real reason is “for the best”

Intersex characteristics are just as common as red heads That sex is seen completely binary is wild. It’s a category we put people in based on how many charcteristics fit into each category, but to say you are either 100% one or the other is just false. Like everything, sex is also a ✨spectrum ✨

exactly. like, if you have high testosterone, does that suddenly make you male+? cause if we wanted to, we could say that you’re more male the higher your testosterone is. but instead we keep it in binary groupings. people can’t seem to comprehend that sometimes, humans put things into boxes because then it is easier to understand. but that doesn’t mean that everybody fits in, or is content inside that box. as humans progress, we can learn more, and we don’t have to make things so black and white.

Sexual characteristics are a spectrum because biology is messy and animals don't develop perfectly all the time. Sex itself is still binary for the majority of animals. The core is this: one sex produces eggs, the other sperm. Everything else is a combination of that. The sexual characteristics, however, can be widely different depending on developmental factors, but there can still only be one or the other. No human has ever produced functional egg AND sperm cells, for example. On the flipside, non-human animals can absolutely have a wider spectrum. It can get wild. It's still almost always one sex producing eggs and the other soerm, but some animals are true herms, some can change sex, others even flip the roles of which sex carries the young to term, etc. It's very messy once you get into other animals. But with humans, it's usually pretty clear in terms of which gametes are being produced. Physical characteristics, again, can vary wildly though. Hence intersex people.
