Scriabin is just one of a long list of composers whose works are little-known because they are rarely played in the concert halls. Concert organizers play safe, and many of the music-buying public do, too.

This was a powerful performance of a surprisingly unknown work. It's very accomplished for a first symphony. Believe it or not when it premiered in November of 1900 with Lyadov conducting, the final (vocal) movement was omitted. It was not included until it's first Moscow performance in 1901.

Because it is difficult to perform. It probably requires much rehearsal time to get it all synchronized (besides singers, choir and everything else).

Simply because there are so many works that are little-known, but just as wonderful as this, and it is not possible for everything to be famous. The very concept of being famous is a few standing out above the majority. Now whether the few that become famous are chosen because they do have an edge over everything else that's very nearly as good, or whether it is truly random, or chosen by accidents of history, is another question. I find so many pieces in the "very nearly as good category" that I could not honestly rate even a tiny bit lower that I am inclined to think it's largely accidents of history that decide which composers, and which composers, become famous. That said, the requirement for vocal soloists and chorus probably does count against it, though. That must add to the cost and difficulty of preparing a performance. Still, that doesn't explain why Scriabin's 2nd Symphony, in C minor, is not famous: it seems just as good a composition to me, and it doesn't have any chorus or singers, and it uses a fairly normal-sized orchestra (for the late romantic period). Yet it is possibly even less known than the 1st Symphony. The three best-known of Scriabin's 5 symphonies are, oddly, the ones that are in his later, possibly less accessible style, and require a larger orchestra, and a chorus and organ in one case - these three being Symphony no. 3 in C minor, "The Divine Poem", Symphony no. 4 in C major, "The Poem of Ecstasy", and Symphony no. 5 in F-sharp major (sort of), "Prometheus, the Poem of Fire". This last is the one with the chorus and organ, as well as a piano soloist. These three use the largest orchestra, and are probably the most difficult to perform - but they are all better know than Symphonies 1 and 2. I have no idea why - these things cannot always be explained easily.

I got to sing this with a choir. Unfortunately, it was in French. Nothing wrong with the language (I'm Canadian and huge advocate for better French education to bring our country closer together and make everyone here more cultured), but it's a bit more awkward to sing this one. I'm also fluent in Polish, so just in terms of pronunciation, Russian does feel more natural to me than French. But what an experience it was to have had the privilege to perform this!

In these weird Coronavirus times, would it be unforgiveable yet again to perform it without the chorus, or even without the whole final movt, as happened in the premiere? It's too good not to perform for reasons of practicability!

Coronavirus will be history one day - even if it is still with us, we will just live with it like we do influenza, with annual vaccinations. As for the symphony, it would be far from ideal to perform it without the chorus or entire final movement, because it would be incomplete, and not as the composer intended it. I would not pay to attend a performance of it minus the final movement... any more than I would for Beethoven's 9th Symphony minus the final movement. The fact that, due to practical limitations, the first performance was without the final movement should not be used to justify doing likewise with later performances. The symphony is now well established as a 6-movement symphony with vocal soloists and chorus in the last movement, following a trend in choral symphonies that began with Beethoven, and I don't think a 5-movement performance would fly today.

Je me suis sentie un peu déçue aussi, de ce fait ; l'orchestration est, elle, bien évidemment, remarquable: en tant que "GRAND ORDONNATEUR" en herbe, Scriabine ne pouvait faire moins ! Un immense génie complètement illuminé... (allumé, même, Haha !) On est loin, j'ajoute, du niveau des œuvres "Spectacle total" avec... Sons lumières ET PARFUMS !!

If you like this interpretation but find the singer's not up to the music, listen to, Riccardo Muti's recording of it. The Philadelphia Orchestra and the singer's are, Stefania Toczyska and Michael Myers. They are wonderful! It's a great recording.

It would have been great if the mezzo sang in tune. Even the occasional note would have been nice. A truly appalling performance from her and utterly painful to listen to. And to think this was broadcast. If anyone should be interested in hearing how it should be performed I respectfully suggest going to Prague in 2021 where it will be featured as part of a festival of Scriabin's music to mark his 150th birthday anniversary. I am going in the hope it gets this performance out of my memory.

I am not a singer but I find it not so horrible. That are a micro differences or...? I have not listened the whole symphony yet. Tell me where is such a place? I find maybe her singing a little poor in terms of color and expression but these intonation problems hm..i can't find the place where she is complete out of tune. @@autodidact2499 You are correct, I must grant - each of the few times I've seen you correct others' posts. But is it really necessary to go about arrogantly correcting others' spelling or grammar? In a way, I am in sympathy with you. I'm a bit of a stickler for proper grammar, spelling, and so on, and it makes me wince a little when someone gets something wrong, especially if I think it should surely be easy to get it right. But what the...? It's not up to me to correct everyone else. People don't usually react well to being corrected, perhaps because they feel a bit humiliated, and they're not likely to like the person who corrects them. I decided long ago I didn't want to correct everything wrong I see if it's at the cost of alienating others from me. Some people may, through no fault of their own, have had less education, and so may not be able to produce a perfect piece of writing, and some people are in a hurry in their busy lives and may not have time for proof-readingi of their comments, or they may have poor physical dexterity which makes error-free typing very difficult. Some people not conversant with computers may not know how to produce the accented characters that you have found lacking in at least one post. Who knows? It's not for me to judge why someone else produces typing that may look careless or error-prone. Besides, however perfect I might privately think I am, I might one day be wrong in something - make a mistake I either don't know about, or that I forget to correct - it's happened many a time, despite my attempt to be careful whenever I write. And then it will be humiliating for me to be corrected if I have gone around correcting everyone else. I suppose you may not be like me in how you see this, and you must do what you must do. But I ask... is it really worth it to get disliked by people for the sake of being able to correct them? Personally, I don't think so.
