I played the most fun (for me) game of magic ever with this commander last night. I was backed against a wall from the start, missed land drops and had Arcades throwing walls at me and Mirrym Dragons. I kept them away and won, I didn't even have to use Hullbreaker horror. It was a long intense game and I was sure I was going to lose. But I somehow pulled out the win. Easily my favorite commander of 2023.

People get so salty but you’re spot on: the early Incubator and Discovery were dominating. I know the other Dimir person can’t do much about those but the first guy was in white so he should have had a couple answers. Looks fun I am considering this build in paper. I love a good tribal deck and Lorwyn is when I started playing so the Fae are dear to me

I just built a version of this deck, have yet to test it out. I’m hoping I didn’t take out too many faeries, I ran a flash package instead of focusing on tribal. I might end up switching back to something similar to what you have. Also your deck seemed casual to me, kindred discovery accelerated you enough to be archenemy and be fine. Like you said without it you would have been much slower

I thought so too. I think I only countered one spell. No reason you can't build Alela as a flash deck without any faeries at all if that's what you want to do. I just love tribal builds.

Built up my jetmir deck from a precon to cedh and dropped it back down to high power, but even in the early days of it being a precon with jetmir in charge people complained. I think there are some players who don't like interaction but oh well

Can you put ‘strong casual’ or the like to differentiate and then be done with it; as it’s absolutely on the powerful end of casual decks.

Would you consider running Dictate of Erebos? I've thought about the fact that you can make a bunch of tokens at instant speed, and then sacrifice the tokens to make mana with Phyrexian/Ashnod's Altar, also at instant speed. Feels like it might be relevant.

How strong would you rate Alela? I mean she isnt that good at recovering after whipes or?

Depends if you can keep your hand full really. She’s great at keeping a board presence and you’ve obviously got access to counters to protect your board. I think if you go for a more general purpose flash deck then she could be a real pain to deal with.

I think Tewyll is quite dangerous, I think I'll cut her from my list, I think the Talion is a very "feels bad" creature, so I cut both of those. in my list I have "Anowon, the Ruin Thief", which buffs up all the tokens that Alela makes, because they are rogues as well as "Ayara, First of Locthwain" which drains each opponent for every token I make, since its creature etb. I would not consider free counterspells as casual, in fact any free spell unless it says 0 on the card cost, so these "force of" cards are not casual friendly in my opinion

I reckon this is quite similar to the precon. I agree the deck is powerfull, but you're also quite good reading opponents and keeping pace. That said, Kindred discovery MVP for tribal decks. It saved you and gave you fuel to never stop with the shenanigans

I definitely always underrate Goad because it usually just seems annoying, and not actually that useful against the archetypes of decks I really don't like losing to, and it's much worse once you inevitably end up against a single opponent. Turns into a pretty valuable tool if no one is wiping the board and no one is conceding the game. We're still waiting for a casual banlist to really seperate things and tell people what people REALLY can't play, till then its unfortunately all the same format

It’s a nice bonus to have on the commander. Like you said, it does rely on a lack of board wipes though which tends to be a tall order in todays meta.

I think the free counterspells are definitely what the other player was complaining about, in my playgroup we consider those fairly powerful. It's definitely on the sweaty side of casual, but besides that I can find no fault in the deck. I think your fine and if a player doesn't want to deal with a bunch of free counterspells they should explicitly look at that, and there definitely wasn't a problem with fast mana besides the sol ring and as a community we've basically said sol rings casual mana crypts not.

I mean I used it to counter a mana drain so I can’t feel too bad about playing it. It’s the MTGO meta unfortunately. I’d love to play classic, battlecruiser EDH but it’s just not on the cards against most MTGO players.

It’s too bad about the scoops, but also, knowing what you had in hand it was going to be a painful experience for them. The amount of value you were accruing backed with counter magic was not going to be overcome easily. In the end, the game is still flawed. Counter magic has always been a problem for the game and they haven’t done enough to make that form of control fair. They honestly should be stapling “this spell cannot be countered” on most 5+ drops.
