Pretty sure a 16 mile long asteroid wouldn't have the energy equivalent of only 100,000 nuclear warheads. Considering the average nuclear warhead has a yield of 150 kilotons, and there are 100,000 of them, that would be the equivalent of 15 million kilotons, or only 15 thousand megatons. For reference, the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs was only 7.5 miles wide, but produced the energy of around 100 million megatons. Thats more than 6000 times the amount of energy release of the 16 mile long asteroid within this scenario. Of course, the energy released also depends on how fast the asteroid is traveling, but cmon. Only 100,000? Well, no shit the devastation had a more powerful impact than expected, in fact, they completely underestimated; they predicted only 15 thousand megatons which is far less than it actually should've been. Who's even making these calculations? People's lives are at stake! Anyway, Chicxulub asteroid was around 10 to 12 km long, while the asteroid in this scenario is around 26 km long. Just to give you an idea. Its basically almost triple the length. Now, if we were to use the average nuclear warhead yield for fusion based weapons, we can assume each warhead has the energy equivalent of around 6 megatons. Which, based on the 100,000 nuclear warhead statement from earlier, brings the energy release of the asteroid to about 600,000 megatons. Still, not enough to be realistic in terms of the size of the asteroid. Yeah, whoever is estimating the amount of energy the asteroid releases upon impact should be fired. If the asteroid were made of iron in this scenario (which most asteroids are made up of some metals) and had a velocity of 50km per second (average Earth and Moon cometary impacts, although this speed is probably unlikely for large scale asteroids) it would produce 1 billion megatons of energy upon impact creating a crater with a diameter of around 500,000 meters, or 500 kilometers. Even at the lowest average speed of regular asteroid belt asteroids, (5km/sec), the asteroid would still produce as much as around 10 million megatons upon impact.
