Alesis 3630 Mods

The Power Supply is not Original. The Original one has the Alesis Logo on it. I actually bought this unit in the 90s and paid the full price which of 300 bucks back then, which is not really that cheap if you take Inflation into account. I also think about upgrading my unit but on the other hand, i somehow really do like the sound. It also depends on which revision you have, fortunately i own the second revision which definitely sounds better. The Gate maybe introduces some noise but i never really noticed that. Beside that, you can use the Noise Gate as an effect. Like you said, it all depends on which kind of music you make and what instruments you use with it. What's actually really good on this unit is the Sidechain functionality. Never tested it, but i'll buy the cables next month which means after owning it for around 30 years i can hear the Sidechain working for the first time ever!
