Alesis HD24XR SATA caddy with Samsung SSD EVO750

I am testing Alesis HD24XR SATA caddy with Samsung SSD 750 EVO which is Recording 48 tracks (2 machine) up to 3 hours and 30 min and no single issue so far. I have failed several recording test of SATA HDDs such as WD, Seagate, Hitachi (Drive too fast or Drive too slow error) but Samsung SSDs are so far so good. Try any SSDs and tell people what is working and what is not. It is only recording solution to massive 96tracks of audio in live recording.

Hello I just wanted to leave a note for anyone in present day that would like to upgrade the Alesis HD24 to more available hard drives, like SATA/SSD. Thanks to the help of some friends we found the most compatible adapter to convert the SCSI/IDE to SATA/SSD. The best working product with the most success you can find on amazon is. (StarTech IDE to SATA Hard Drive or Optical Drive Adapter Converter - 40-Pin PATA to 2.5" SATA HDD / SSD / ODD Converter (IDE2SAT2). You will have to upgrade the firmware to the latest 1.21 available on the Alesis product website. (Highly recommend using the crossover cable method!) Follow all the instructions and then verify you're firmware is 1.21! Carefully place the StarTech adapter inside the hard drive bay. The hard drive your using must be formatted to FAT32. (Make sure you follow the instructions/power cycle the machine) then when ready insert the HDD bay and allow the machine to detect/mount and format the drive. I'm using one Crucial MX500 500GB SATA 2.5 Inch in each bay and it's absolutely been a great experience and the machine seems to be very happy with that choice as well. If you need help I would do my best to answer any questions.

I bought that interface, too, and I have a similar SSD from Crucial (BX500). The OS is 1.21. Recording is ok, but playing songs and FTP download both can freeze my HD24 (not XR). It's also a bit different if I have it in the first or second slot, and if I have a mechanical HDD present, too. Iwent to some lengths and tried SD card to IDE and CF card to IDE interfaces. Especially for CF card I had high hopes, since it is basically IDE. But it didn't work with the HD24 (jumper error message). All those interfaces did work great with my normal old PC. BTW, why have the HDD to be formatted in FAT32 ? HD24 uses its own format.

I have a Yamaha 02R with 3 adat cards installed and hooked up to an Alesis HD24 via light pipes. My problem is as follows. I have a song on the HD24 with twelve tracks. I want to record on track 13. Card in slots 3 and 4 in the 02R are assigned as 1 thru 8 and 9 thru 16. When I play the 12 tracks back I cannot hear or record on channel 13 unless I go into the 02R and set cards 3/4 digital I/O, to internal analog. Then I can hear my guitar on channel 13 but cannot hear the mix. To hear the mix I have to go back in and set cards 3/4 to digital I/O to hear the mix but cannot hear the guitar on channel 13. I have tried auto input and all input on the HD24 and still no go. I have been at this for days. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We have recorded plenty of 20 some odd track songs with this equipment, the bass player doing all the engineering. He isn't around anymore to give me any advice.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I’m using a 2TB Crucial MX500 in my HD24 and it records fine. The problem is it randomly freezes during playback. Any thoughts?

From where do you get the SATA Caddy? I am looking and found two pictures. There are models from vipower and magicsound. I found nothing to purchase neither on ebay nor on reverb nor on google shopping. Do you have a tip where to buy?

I just use an IDE to SATA converter (Startech IDE2SAT2) in a regular Vipower IDE caddy (the front of which I painted grey with Humbrol matt 32 enamel to match the HD24) it is a bit of a tight fit if you want to put a regular SATA drive in there, but there is otherwise plenty of room for the smaller form factor of an SSD.

Version 1.21. Not, it doesn't have to be an XR, the only difference between the two are the converters. I just updated mine so I can run solid state tech. I am pleased! :D

@@wado1942 Hi, can you playback without HD24 becoming unresponsive (restart needed) ? Mine records fine but it won't play back w/o this problem from the ssd. Also FTP freezes the machine when transferring from ssd. But that can also happen with a normal HD.

I find your post very informative. Is it possible to do an instructional video for recording and or cut and paste with the HD 24? There is really nothing on you tube showing much of anything how the HD 24 works. You'd probably get lots of hits of people watching your instructional video and with your ideas such as you did for the alternate ssd. Thank you.

Yes, the Samsung Evo 850 also works. These are readily available at places like BestBuy

I believe not. I think the speed also is not so fast, so a cheaper ssd is a better choice, since it cannot TRIM so Samsung evo is a bit expensive if broken.

@@sirmacho104 Owh he meant the trim function for ssd, kinda something that makes ssd works longer that modern computer os is capable to do.
