Then you talk to everybody and they'll tell you the 70s and 80s were the best time in the history of music, not simply because of all the incredible talent but the SOUND of the music, and the quadraverb certainly was in the arsenal of pro players in the 80s.

My rig back in the day was an MP-1/Quadraverb. I had a Rocktron Hush in the loop of the ADA which was switched on for the distorted patches. The Hush was a mono half rack. The other half was a Boss SE-50. It was a pretty crude unit but it had a compressor and a useable flanger unlike the one in the Quadraverb. So on the Quadraverb, the value and program controls are touch sensitive. If you want them to increment or decrement faster push them harder. Pressing up and down at the same time sets the parameter to the stock value.

Thanks for bringing this stuff back and taking a trip down memory lane! This was my gigging rig back in the 80s: MP-1 into Quadraverb GT, feeding a pair of Marshall 50W heads (power amp section only). I still have all this gear, but the Alesis is the only thing still in my gig rack (and probably not for much longer). BTW, the Quadraverb GT model has the touch-sensitive edit buttons that speed up with more pressure. It also had a really terrible set of distortions and cab sims that I never used....but like you said in your video, the Alesis had some really great reverbs, and they still hold up today. Honestly, the reason I still use mine is that the basic time-based FX - reverb, chorus, flange, compressor, EQ - still sound perfectly good for live use, and the Quad is really easy to program and integrate into a MIDI rack rig. I'd like to replace it with something a bit more modern, but I will probably keep using it until I take a swing at the Fractal Axe-FX and stop carrying the tubes around.

If your effects are being supplied by the MP1, they’ll be based off the preamp tone alone which is bright and sterile. If the effects are being supplied by the Axe, they would have the power and speaker sim to help warm it up. Sometimes there will be a filter on a reverb patch which could help somewhat. But in the 80s most effects were placed between the pre and power, a sound I am all too familiar with, you nailed the 80s with this one LT.

Leon, I need a little advice on a similar set up. I'm not sure about the signal path needed, and its going to be a lot like what you have there. How do I use my MP-2 WITH a multiFX processor and an amp with an FXloop? I want to add my MP-2 to my current chain, which is, Guitar to pedal board to the front of my recto - with my DSP in the recto send and back to the recto thru the FX return. I'm not sure about howTF I add a preamp to that kind of path. I used to run a stereo poweramp in my rack and it was no biggie, but now with my recto I am a bit confused as to where the MP-2 fits in. Do I go from the Pedalboard output into the front of the MP-2, send from MP-2 into the DSP input (return) - out from the DSP output (Send) to the recto loop return - Recto to cab? If you have a sec to throw me an idea that would be great dude, or just what the path is on what you have there with this set up, cuz its almost the same as what I will be running. Cheers

Stereo In! Over easy parameters you get complicated routings with several parallel ways (in the GT version of the Quadraverb with additional analogue paths). It has phase problems solvable to constructive interfering phases with a kind of 'shading'. It takes a time for me to dig thru the volumes of the outputs, maybe setting the 8 possible MIDI-controllers to them will help to get experience for finding working relations between the channels; balance is sometimes solved by setting one out to 30, the second to 70 giving 100 together, meaning 100%, 30% and 70%; then the relativity theory is a god's dice...also maximum is 127 in MIDI-language via controllers: exercise for you: what is 70% of 127???? and of course 30% of 127?? But besides digitality it offers cool sounds at CD-quality;-) A problem I also had with the levels: Although it merely has unsymmetrical inputs, it deserves a relatively high voltage to achieve 85dB Headroom...

I finally ended up selling the Quadraverb a few years ago for like $75 (i think i paid $525 new in the late 80s). I still have the ADA power amp, but only one side works right now (200 watt amp, 100 watts per channel. So i have a 100 watt amp for now. Ha)

Glad to hear some Ty Tabor riffs !!...I'm about to get my hands on a Quadraverb GT which I used a zillion years ago and has been forgotten in an old band mate house for years...the distortion/overdrive section of the GT is absolute garbage, but the modulation part is awesome...

Oh yes. Place an old Rocktron Intellifex after the Quadraverb as reverb...and enjoy Heaven! And you can also extend delay time on the Quadraverb, using a configuration without reverb. These old guys have a lot to say still.

Loved my ADA, along with 2 spx900’s, and the rest of the 18 space rack. Today though, Fractal all the way!

Do tell me about the rest of that rack :D

@@LeonTodd Ok, here goes: Korg DT-1 tuner, ADA MP1 with an ADA 8 button scene changer foot switcher (midi messages sent to all midi gear) a Rocktron Hush IICX. next two spaces occupied by 2 Yamaha SPX 900’s. One dedicated to mostly reverb, the other delay and modulation. I ran them 100% wet. The way I did that was use a Rane SM26 6 channel mixer. Inputs 1&2 for the ADA dry stereo straight through. 3&4 for (1) SPX 900, input 5&6 for the 2nd SPX 900. The 6 inputs were merged into a stereo pair. Effect transparency was much better, while maintaining a solid tone. then went into a , a Digitech dual 14 band midi controlled EQ, a BBE Sonic Maximizer, a behringer Edison spatial enhancer. after that a 4 space Yamaha p2200 stereo amplifier. Into (2) 4x12 Carvin celestian cabs @8 ohms per side. It was a majical setup for 1989. That was as much as I could afford. I would’ve had a Lexicon and Eventide in place of the Yamahas. I got tons of compliments on my “record sounding tone” though.

I've got an ADA MP1 and a Lexicon MPX G2 processor. Thought about selling them. This makes me want to "rediscover" those sounds. Thanks man!

Worth revisiting! Super fun

Great video Leon! I have the exact same rig here (minus the Hamer but one day...) and I'd like to replicate your ada Mp1 preset sounds. Would you be willing to share the settings? Are they the same as your 5 minute tones from the ADA vid?
@stormvamp3 жыл бұрын
Great video! I still have my 2 Quadraverbs, you know.. in case one failed you always carried a reserve. :-) Leon did you ever try the H&K Cream Machine? Lovely unit, used valves like de ADA as pre-amp, lacked Eq but still a very interesting unit.

Is there a midi foot pedal to use with this quadraverb?

During the late 90s I've been hogging this around to studios jamming and gigs couple with Tubes Marshall 50/50 Poweramp. ADA MP1 and Alexis Quadraverb was inspired by Paul Gilbert during at that time. Luckily I've not sold mine and I've moded the MP1 to 3TM back in 2007. Yeah I got tired of hauling around this three rack effects so I'm using a cheap modern multieffects now. Makes things easier on the transportation.

Hey Leon, yep, that was my exact set up in the 90's! (had an ADA 1U power amp as well and a BBE sonic maximizer!) Also used a Hamer then sometimes as well (Chaparral Custom..the hand airbrushed snakeskin one) Loved the quadraverb and it was great with the ADA as you can link them via midi and one push on the midi pedal would change both units to whatever preset you wanted. No more tap dancing with a load of pedals;-))

@@LeonTodd Well, the power amp (although was 100w) wasn't very loud at all. I eventually went back to a JCM800 with Boss and MXR pedals when I did the Ozzy tribute band. Much more suited the sound and A LOT louder! Back to tap dancing though!

Got both units plus my trusty SPX 90 sitting right here. Trouble is, I rarely use them these days. Thought about selling them but just can't bring myself to do it, too many good memories!
