I had the great honor of taking private lessons with Mr. Alex Acuna while living in LA. Alex is a legendary player, a legendary teacher, and a great person.

Beyond doubt, Acuna is a legend, but to bring out that gem out to the public - that's another skill that you have Dom, and you have in abundance. The level of human connection you are able to create is magic.

My favorite percussionist. My dad used to play all the Gospel records from light records like Andrea Crouch and Koinonia and that’s how I first heard him in the early 80’s. God bless this man. I’m glad I found this interview. ❤️

I’ve been playing drum kit for a while now and I absolutely love it, but I know that it’s only the beginning. I’m trying to learn all I can about percussion, particularly world percussion instruments. I want to learn about the congas, the bongos, the djembe, the cajon, and the timbales, as well as all the world percussion instruments like shaker, cowbell (we ALL gotta have more cowbell, right?), and everything!!! I feel like watching some percussionists, like Alex Acuña, can really help me out.

Is sad to know that in Peru, no one pays him the respect he deserves, he is more recognized Internationally than in his own country. He deserves a statue in the main plaza.

I beg to differ. Alex Acuña´s playing and career are well recognized in Perú (I am peruvian and a drummer myself ) and he´s been a great model and inspiration for many peruvian musicians, not only drummers and percussionists. He´s probably more known in the States since he left when he was practically a kid and from then on made his musical career over there, but in Perú we love him and feel proud of him. Alex, If you ever have the chance to watch this video: ¡Recibe un saludo y un fuerte abrazo!

Alex Acuna, great Drummer/Percussionist. First heard Alex on Lee Ritenour's Friendship Album way way back in the mid 80s. Also Alex Acuna's tuition video is really cool too. I would say that Alex appears on most of my early albums, in fact most of the time you would have Alex & Abe Laboriel appearing on the same albums. Great rhythm section. Love them both dearly. There is also some fantastic video footage of the late great Lyle Mays on keys with Alex Acuna just improvising together. R.I.P. Lyle Mays.

Alex, your description of Weather Report and how each night was intense and different, was awesome to hear. You describing the musical variations from night to night... makes me regret never having had the chance to see the great Jaco and Joe and the rest of that great band perform. Would love to see an in depth interview with you about every aspect of that legendary band. Any chance of that happening?

Goes to show how a man expensively researched drumming just from his own personal but passionate experience, through American drumming. I get inspired more from Latin drumming, so it's so Personal listening to his experiences from his study of just observing his culture through the greats that he mentioned.

Think about that for a minute.....you're a drummer. You come to the US, and in one week you see Gene Krupa, Jake Hanna, Tony WIlliams, Tito Puente and Sonny Payne.
