Alex Duthart taught me the drums for a while at Garrion Academy in Overtown in the 80s. He was a hell of a drummer and a good, patient teacher. He'd be showing me something simple on the kit and then get carried away. Made it look effortless. At the time I wasn't aware he was a bit of a legend as a pipe band snare drummer. I just knew he was bloody good!

I had the distinct pleasure to work with Alex Duthart as his asst, while he was judging the drumming at the Stone Mountain Highland Games many years back. He promised to take on my son as a student, but unfortunately passed away before that happened. We both have held and continue to hold Alex in the highest regard!! May you rest in peace and play your fantastic beatings in heaven!!

Growing up in California these men were distant legends. It is absolutely wonderful to be able to see them and listen to them. And to hear Seamus MacNeill refer to the pipes as the "agony bag"... all hail KZbin. Thanks very much for posting this.

When I was in my teens I attended a piping college for 3 years running with world class pipers/drummers and best bit was the final recitals. Alex Duthart and Bert Barr were there each year. My parents had them all round for a party the last 2 years, and I'm pretty sure Alex Duthart was the one who coined (or at least liked spreading/teasing these world class pipers with) the phrase "agony bag" - I can't see Seamus MacNeill every spreading a term like that. Super fun person/people. Ironically, the weakest part of the recital I remember is when the pipers (solo) and drummers did a quartet or similar - I don't think the solo pipers were tight together, but drummers were! ... and I'm a piper and worship those pipers.

I remember Seamus at the College, he would arrive with his fish and chips,.. then at the end of the lessons we would all put fifty pence in for a bottle of Stewart's Whisky, the Blood O' the Barley.

There sure has been a lot of development in technique and sound of pipe band drumming even from the time of this video.
