Why do people think they know how a non existent future would have worked out? Gazza has mental problems, it’s clear, he wouldn’t have lasted at Utd. Fergie Dodged a bullet

I can see where you're coming from, but I disagree. Walter Smith is in the same kind of mould as Fergie......and Rangers got 4 great seasons out of Gazza.....right around the time of that Euro 96 performance. Had Fergie been able to get him earlier, I believe a lot of his problems would have been eradicated to an extent. He needed a father figure while away from home. Walter Smith was that man, and he came on leaps and bounds while up here. I'm certain Fergie would have put him on the right path too,

Fergie would’ve moulded Gazza into someone who played, lived and thought positively; I’m sure of it. Can you imagine having a 4-3-2-1 with Gascoigne and Cantona in floating AttMid roles behind Cole or Solskjaer and connecting to the midfield with Beckham and Giggs on the wings, and Keane providing support in the centre. I want to cry at that possibility. What a team!!
@davebrayfb
@davebrayfb Жыл бұрын
That would be too attacking, Keane was not a holding midfielder in his early years (most of the 90s) Gazza & Cantona would not track back enough, and neither would Cole, he did play a similar formation in Europe for the 1996/97 season, with Johnson as Holding mid, Giggs LM, Beckham RM, Cantona AM with Solskjaer & Cole upfront.

I don't even know if Fergie could have saved Gazza, having read his (Gazza's) book Gazza had a lot of inner demons already, and also an addictive personality. Football wise he was a phenomenon - perhaps not in the Cristiano / Messi / Maradona bracket, but he was the best of his generation in terms of talent. Definitely the best England had for generations. Maybe at United Gazza would have self destructed in a different way, would he have towed the line, or rebelled against it? As it goes, although he never truly had the career his talent deserved, it wasn't a bad one. It's fantastic to see him looking so well and lucid now though. He was my hero as a 10 year old in 1990 - it was Gazza that made me fall in love with football as a whole (although I "supported" United before then)

All these comments voted up saying Fergie would have made sure he was the best in the world and healthy for the next decade and after thinking about it and taking into account both of their personalities and upbringing...... i'm honestly not so sure. Gazza was working class, wore his heart on his sleeve and never backed down from a challenge, his bookings and sendings off seemed to come from him being overly emotional, if he had lost possession cheaply and was over compensating wildly trying to get the ball back and that showed a lack of maturity, but because he's so ridiculously talented he more than makes up for this potentially catastrophic flaw. You need players like him because people who are overly emotional are normally also overly competitive and push themselves to be creative to always succeed, couple that with an addictive personality, hyperactivity and money not being an issue to limit him anymore and people lauding him as the best young footballer in England sends your confidence through the roof.... i just dont see Sir Alex getting through to him If Fergie had been too strict on him it could have backfired spectacularly, pretty sure if Alex had thrown a boot at Gazza he would have picked up Paul Scholes and thrown him at Sir Alex. Alex Ferguson upbringing was very very very tough and he used fear to control his players and i just dont see that approach working with an 80's Gazza. We might have never got the timeless classic Fog on the Tyne single either and i dont want to see that alternate universe

It would have been fascinating to see what would have happened if gaza had gone to United. I don't think it's a certainty that he would have stayed out of trouble though as there were a few heavy drinkers at United at the time like Robson, Paul Mcgrath and Norman Whiteside.

Here's an alternate timeline I'm sure Newcastle fans would have loved. When a young Alan Shearer went for his trial with Newcastle they didn't have enough goalkeepers for the trial matches so the trainers just picked outfield players to go in goal for the match and you guessed it Shearer was one of the unlucky ones. One seemingly irrelevant decision cost the club 15 million quid in the long run. Imagine a Newcastle team with Gascoigne and Shearer staying with the club until they got an infusion of cash during the early 90's? I bet they would have made more than a dent in Man Utd's 90's titles haul I'm sure if you asked Kevin Keegan today he'd tell you he would love that alternate timeline.... Loooovveee Ittttttt!!! 🤣
