I wonder why people can say such things about those who engage professionally in culture-i.e., those very scholars of art or literature-when they couldn’t get away doing so with specialists in medicine or rocket science? This is another reason why the authorities can get away with budget cuts to arts and the humanities under the assumption that it’s all totally individual and subjective, and anybody can and does have an opinion on it. The arts become simply a matter of taste and, for some, therefore superfluous. On that account, Kerr is as bad as the philistines.
