Alex Ovechkin's First Hat Trick (1/13/2006)

January 13, 2006 - Just over halfway through the season, Alex Ovechkin looked to do something that hadn't been done in 10 years - score 30 goals as a rookie. The Great 8 turned up the heat in the second period with two goals and a monstrous counter-hit on Vitaly Vishnevskiy. After a tight-checking third period resulted in a tie game after regulation, Ovechkin rewarded the fans who stayed up late to watch as he capped off his memorable night with his first career hat trick and first career overtime goal just after 1 a.m. Washington time. Little did Capitals fans know this was only the first of 28 hat tricks and counting for the greatest player in franchise history.

Young Ovi was like a player you create in a video game. Amazing speed, hits like a truck, has a perfect snap, slap, and wrist shot, and also has awesome passing skills

You can see a superstar back then. He certainly has proven he is the GOAT. Can’t wait for him to get to Wayne’s record and more. His enthusiasm to score goals is as raw in 2023 as it was in 2005. Thank you Ovi for those many years.
