Striking has been the dominant type of hand to hand combat for thousands of years. The UFC popularized MMA with a rule set that favors grappling and wrestling. Effective strikes are limited and often barred. There is a discussion on banning side kicks to the knee. Bam all effective strikes. The UFC bans small joint locks. A simple tactic that neutralizes a lot of grappling. MMA rules, favor grappling. But striking, is the superior form of fighting. And it’s been proven multiple times, by people like Alex Pereira, who are strikers with minimal wrestling and grappling skills. Striking is the most important skill in a fight

i think we all should revisit the conversation about "if anthony joshua and francis Nnganou were to have a rematch in MMA" Main argument was always "what's AJ gonna do against a grappler?" My response was always "strike. WTF, he is a boxer FFS. As long as his power shot lands before you clasps your hands, the rest does not matter" And we all saw just how fast he is against Nnganou. And here we are, having a similar debate about Alex Pereira. And even if ALex were to face an elite wrestler, foot work goes a long way. Ducking under to shoot or level change can be very dangerous against a striker with crisps technique, high level of fight IQ, and pin point precise strike. The whole point of MMA was never to see what styles mesh together, but to see what style is the best or has the best application/applied the best by a fighter.

That was the cream of the crop for kickboxing at the time. Izzy went 2-2 there. Gane, Rozenstruik and Thompson never competed at the top. Had the fight against Jan not been in Mexico City, an incredibly high altitude city, the fight may have continued with Jan dominating Alex on the ground, as he did. However, that doesn’t negate Alex had superior conditioning (a necessary skill), which Jan might’ve overlooked, and that was Jan’s failure. Alex did a phenomenal job in that fight to withstand the ground game and dominate on the feet in the later rounds. Now? Alex is just good. What’s not to know about MMA? He’s a phenomenal striker, and he’s training under Glover in grappling. He’s essentially everything MMA is: styles make fights, and to have longevity you need to be well-rounded.

Who is we? Lol I had Pereira winning. Nobody in the ufc can stand with Pereira. Nobody. We're talking about a properly hydrated Pereira at 205. That punch barley landed and it knocked hill out cold. Imagine if it landed flush. If Pereira fights Tom at heavyweight he will win if tom stands up with him. The way tom wins is by taking Pereira down and either ground and pound or a submission. But I think Tom's ego will want to stand against Pereira and this will be his downfall.

It's not just ego, beating Pereira on the feet would also just be a massive boost to them as fighters and their personal brand. It's one thing if someone fights Alex and smothers him on the ground the whole time, it's basically what people expect. But if you can be the guy that beats Pereira on the feet, that'd instantly elevate you into being a superstar. The man who beat the monster at their own game. For Izzy it didn't really count since he was already a dominant champ and both him and Pereira are basically considered to be in their own tier of striking apart from everyone else, but for everyone else it's a chance to plant their flag.

What are you talking about? Some of the most successful champions in UFC history only defended takedowns so they could force you to strike with them. Anderson Silva, Chuck Liddell, Israel, Adesanya… Alex Pereira is just the final form. He’s literally built perfectly for a fighter. Exactly like Jon Jones and Sean O’Malley and GSP and Even Conor McGregor for featherweight. Super tall with a strong chest and skinny arms and leg legs makes it really easy to make weight and Use that size for under hooks and to counter takedowns. They don’t need know how to wrestle, just to keep you away from them and then under hook and toss you when you try to shoot. It makes to get super close against the super dangerous opponent that can use all eight weapons

What makes huge difference in mma compared to striking only is how the fighter crosses the void or no mans land between them. Think about boxing they can put there foot a cross the void lean back, but mma you are in a good take down stance. As we fight with no gloves at all on one has to control the hands contact force, so void stays more empty, an the fighter has limit contact.

That is because UFC hand picks the top guys at certain weight classes to be strikers. There grapplers who could’ve easily beaten Adesanya. And Also, Periera. The UFC needs certain weight classes to have a striking Champ. Because they need to appeal to the fan who likes striking. There are 3 fans, one that likes striking, one the likes grappling, and a third that likes both/mix. You need to have a champ at all 3 in order to have a product for all 3 fan bases.

We learned that an elite striker from a previous background can rise to the top of MMA long ago. Wrestling has become this dominant background from the pure number of athletes having success. But Lyoto Machida, Stephen wonderboy thompson, showed us a blueprint for the elite striking background to reach the highest level by simply focusing on defensive grappling and popping back up to your feet. Disengaging the wrestler at every opportunity and making your strikes count. This isn't a new concept by Alex, Or even Izzy. They just happen to make it work the best because at heavier weights you elite kickboxers put people to sleep with one punch or kick.

I saw it from a mile away. Jamahal hasn't beaten anyone and had no business in that ring with Pereira. Jon Jones left a power vacuum when he left. Filling his spot in an aging division led to a truly novel sequence of events which let a 40+ year-old man ascend to the title. Jiri put an end to that nonsense - but he was fast-tracked to the title. Similarly, Jiri gets injured, leaving ANOTHER power vacuum in a talent-starved division. Desperate for an actual contender, Jamahal was fast-tracked to the title - which he got by beating up an old man. Tough guy, big accomplishment... If the UFC had enough warm bodies for a legit top-10 at LH, Jamahal would be a gatekeeper. Now the division has someone who's an actual champion.

I love Chaels history lessons so much. Throwing shine on Marco freakin Ruas like that. What a throwback fighter. Why was he so relevant? He was one of the first guys to throw it ALL together. Could he grapple? Hell yeah. Did he have subs? Sure did. Could he strike? With the best of them. Did he have a backup plan against 300 lb Paul Varelens? Yep! Foot stomps all night! Goddamn what a glorious sport. To watch the evolution from Gracie to Ruas to Coleman to Liddell to the spider to GSP to JBJ to Mac to O malley and on and on. We truly are witnessing evolution in real time. Great observation Uncle!

It's nice to hear that you're aware we haven't seen everything Poatan has to offer yet. The light heavy weight division is really exciting because of him. I wasn't a big fan of the UFC when i began my kickboxing journey but Poatan drew my attention to it more and more. I want to transition into training MMA soon now.

Unfortunately I think Jones wrestle fucks and keeps the fight on the ground. He has way too much to lose trying to stand with him. The most boring fight of both of their careers

There have been a ton of strikers before Holly Holm that performed well in MMA. Chuck Liddell, Anderson Silva, Stephen Thompson. Take down defence has been talked about for a long time. You talked about grappling with Dan Severn, but ignored BJJ and the Gracie contribution to the sport. Having a more well rounded skill set is better but it’s more about the fighter than the style. Props to Alex though! Props to Max also for putting on a striking clinic.

I still think get someone on the floor and know the locks and the strangles the jobs nearly done, it helps if you are a good striker, but you need to know to do on the floor.

Not everyone comes up against grapples. Its really as simple as that. This is what is facinating about the UFC. You will always have fighters with different strengths, weaknesses and specialisations. Then you have the Ultimate all-round godgifted fighters like Jon Jones, GSP, Jose Aldo, Nurmagamedov, Anderson Silva, etc.

My favorite fighter of all time Matt Hugh’s, my dad had me wrestling since 2 years old, even my brother and sisters, I’m 42, I grew up watching all these guys. I remember watching UFC I’m the 90s buying underground UFC DVDs from the gas station which most wasn’t UFC but UFC fighters fighting in a not so professional promotions. The things those fighters went through, and the bad guy may be right, some MMA fighting styles may have surpassed wrestling fighters but wrestling will always be needed. Especially when fighters fight other fighters who hands are just better there’s nothing much they can do but wrestle, or if they are tired and needs to some rest wrestling is a tool and will always be. But I guess some fighters don’t need wrestling. It hurts to say that. 😂
