Alex Smith shares his perspective on job security as a veteran QB with the Kansas City Chiefs and why he mentors first round draft pick and rookie QB, Patrick Mahomes II. Plus, Coach Andy Reid offers his perspective on why the Chiefs drafted a QB when they did and how Smith is going above and beyond to mentor Mahomes.

I've always said this of Smith and I'll say it again. He is the epitome of a class act. San Fransisco was a dumpster fire when he was drafted. He had zero stability. A revolving door of OC's. When Harbaugh came in I thought for sure if he keeps Alex and Alex get's another chance then he'll develop into something great. Well luckily for us as Chiefs fans SF traded him, (hindsight is 20/20 though right?) and now we're seeing what stability can do for a guy like Smith. SF front office is what's destroying that franchise. The owner needs to sell the team to someone who actually cares. Although i've been a niner hater my entire life I still have plenty of friends who are niner fans. Almost all of them will tell you the same, Smith is a class act who never got a real shot in SF.

Brandon Powers Alex Smith sucks and should never been drafted over Aaron Rodgers it was a dumb decision from that dumbass head coach Mike Nolan at the time. Aaron Rodgers was the better quarterback coming out of college Aaron Rodgers had the better arm had the better physical tools was a better athlete and was the hometown kid who wanted to play for San Francisco. Now you say Kansas City fans are happy to have Alex Smith well last year and just this year during the preseason Kansas City fans were calling for Pat Mahomes to start and last year Kansas City Chiefs fans wanted Alex Smith gone.

This dude showed that he wants to work with someone even when they arent threatening to take his job. Add that to the fact that Andy Reid was his coach, he should definitely go into coaching when his time as a player is up and mainly work with young QBs. We all see exactly how he helped Pat by making sure to make good reads against a defense and it's also great to see that he kinda showed Mahomes how to keep those Interception numbers down as well as when is a good time to take off out of the pocket.

jamie jones I completely agree. We were a dumpster fire before Andy and Alex came to KC. Go get your ring Alex. I know he has a lot of great football left in him, but I have a feeling that someday we are going to see Alex as an OC on the sidelines, maybe even a head coach. I have enormous respect for Alex Smith, the way he got shit on in SF was appalling, but he took his medicine, stood up like a man, and came back better than ever.

I wouldn't bet on it. For as good as he looked he'll still be a 34 year old QB next year. Why give a 34 year old franchise QB money when you have a younger guy who will probably be able to give you similar production with a higher ceiling. Give Mahomes a year to fully grasp the offense and adjust to NFL speed then make the switch. Another thing is Mahomes is on a rookie contract which will be a huge part of decision making. I'm not a Chiefs fan but they have everything in place to take over the AFC when Brady eventually regresses.

It's no surprise that Alex feels that way, but Alex is a class act and a veteran of the league. He understands how it all works. The Packers did the same thing with Favre and Rodgers, the Pats have a similar situation, as well as a lot of other teams. The NFL is a a league that everyone will eventually be replaced, Joe Montana found that out, as well as Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Favre, etc. As a KC fan I can tell you that Alex & Andy have been exactly what the team needed at a time when they needed it, stability. Is Alex going to Canton? No, but that doesn't mean he's had a bad career, he just started in a place that was terrible for both he and many others. I'm happy to see he proved to everyone that if given the chance he could be a good QB, maybe not Canton worthy, but there have been a ton of QB's throughout the history of the league that would give anything to have been able to do what he has done. And oh by the way, Alex has done a lot off the field for his community as well, I think that gets overlooked way too often

Never thought I'd say this after all how much frustration Alex Smith gave me as a 49ers fan, but yea, he is a better QB than I gave him credit for. Can't believe I even kinda want him back too. Not as our starter, no, but someone who could tutor one of our new guys like CJ? Oh heck yea, I'd be all for that. Don't see it happening since I do think that ship has long sailed, but nevertheless, Alex is someone I can't help but respect now. A shame he never had that killer instinct in him though. He might have been up there with guys like Manning, Brees and maybe even Brady if he did. That's what really held him back. It wasn't a case of not being smart enough to play QB. It was a case not being tough enough to do whatever it takes to win.

Probably jerked around and trashed more than any other QB in recent memory. No matter what he accomplishes, no matter what he does, people will focus on any tiny flaw he does, or blame any misplay on him, even if it wasn't his fault at all. Led the league in passer rating this year and will probably get MVP votes, yet there will be plenty of people who can't wait to get rid of him in KC. And yet, he never once complains, never says a bad thing about anyone, and never gives up.

Kind of interesting how many people think this is his last year in Kansas City. It's not impossible but I wouldn't bet on it. A quarterback that's never taken an NFL regular season snap (until this Sunday) over a 12 year veteran that consistently has one of the best interception rates in the league? Let alone the high completion percentage and other things, this guy leads the 49ers franchise in pass attempts without interceptions. (That list includes Joe Montana and Steve Young). I don't have an issue with Mahomes. Don't get me wrong. But he would have to do something out of this world to convince the coaches to start him next season.

Its always a shame when selfless and talented guys like this don't get the respect and support they need to truly go as far as they could. The road is littered with them. The NFL is a flawed system, they have agendas that don't align with the team concept, coaches with no HEART and owners that really only care about the bottom line. If you're looking for the prototype coach, passionate, love centered, tough but fair, honest and sincere, you have to see guys like Marty Schottenheimer and Dick Vermiel...just to name a TINY few, Parcells also. OC's can make some brilliant coaches but the league often culls them to HC before they learn the character traits necessary to LEAD men into battle. Not like any of this matters anymore, the league has taken the POISON of cancel culture and is bowing to MARXIST ideology.

Foolish Demon It seems to me like he's a very conservative quarterback. He rarely goes deep but when he does, it works often. Put a conservative QB underneath a conservative coach like Reid, and it's difficult to make it far into the playoffs.

I love Alex Smith and he's looking much stronger this year, he's taking more risks and it's paying off because we have guys that can capitalize off of him. Please stay

I'm very happy for what smith did but he was too conservative to go all the way with a conservative coach... mahomes was exactly what we needed

Being a Chiefs fan and having to endure the likes of Palko, Croyle, Quinn, Huard, Grbac, among others, it's been great having Alex here. He's a good QB and a stand-up guy. If it is his last year in KC, a lot of us are grateful for having him here. Thanks Alex!

He learned to accept change after the 49ers fucked him. I knew Smith was a stand up guy but this just proves a lot. Very humble guy
