VERY underrated. I have to confess, I was one of those for yrs that did not give him the credit he was do. Instead of looking for one signature song such as this one, there are MANY that if you tear the drum part apart, you will find more there than meets the eye. One of my favorites is a sleazy tune called "Spank" Great feel, very cool drumming, and of course Eddie is phenomenal.

Now Alex would be replaced by drum samples and computer software to manipulate the tempo and make the drum sounds uniform. Oh, and the melody would have only one or two notes. And the "singer" would drone on or mumble.

I don’t understand why people say he is underrated. He seems to be very highly rated among musicians and fans alike. He definitely has a Bonham influence but has managed to come up with some signature intros and his solos are always fun to watch! I first saw him in 1981 but I was really impressed with his solo on the Dave reunion tour ‘07-‘08 he was in his mid 50’s and had so much power and endurance, it was IMO of the best solos I think he ever played.

@@JudyGurl - You'd need band experience. If you think Alex is Ed's equal on a talent level, then you don't listen to music with a musician's ear. There is a reason no great drummers cite Alex as an influence, while countless great guitar players cite Ed. They are nowhere near the same level of talent. Sorry, that's just a fact. Doesn't mean Alex didn't do a great job holding down drum duty for VH songs, but he's not impressing any serious drummers out there with his technique.

I used to play with a guy who was an amazing drummer. He could listen to a song a couple times, play along and nail it. Obituary, Slayer, Sepultura, Anthrax... but this song gave him trouble. He couldn't get down the double kick "properly", as he put it. He used to play the most brutal drumming... a total beast, and it surprised me when he said AVH was one of his favorite drummers.

The 1st part of the intro is played on a Simmons pad with sticks then you hear the kick drums come in underneath. Everybody thinks the 1st part is his feet but that's actually his hands on a Simmons pad. Then the bass drums come in which are also Simmons pads. 1984 was Simmons pads with a ludwig super phonic snare drum and Roto-toms along with Paiste symbols. No actual real wood drums were used in the 1984 recording. I actually have very rare pictures of 5150 studio when that album was recorded, the Simmons pads were red.

HARD TO PLAY...this is really an isolated track! nice... Al is as signature as his famous little bro...one of a kind drum sound, VH was a rhythm section of guitar and drums over bass n drums like most bands...this is what made them sound so unique aside from the signature tones and skills...rank this is probably the most signature rock drum track ever...the bass drum parts are hard enough, it was the ride pattern that blew me away

My mom always tells me how the first time she heard this was when her family was on a road trip through Mexico. The song came on the radio, and as soon as that double bass pedal kicked in her mom slammed on the brakes and started sound "OMG THE TIRES GET OUT CHECK THEM!!!" Of course the tires were fine, but to this day my grandma will not listen to this song while driving, or at all for that matter.

Private Account The very beginning is overdubbed just as others have said. The entire album is Simmons with an acoustic snare...the cymbals were overdubbed after the rest of the kit. Alex has never played the very beginning live because he overdubbed it on the record. Eddie says so here: www.google.com/amp/s/www.guitarworld.com/amp/artists/eddie-van-halen-looks-back-van-halen-1984-album-5150-studios

Alex is/was incredible. As a drummer I grew up with him as my role model. So many people goes on about Pearth all the time, and sure, he's good, but Alex had such a different, recognizable sound/setup from 1978-1992 it's imprinted as the best in 80's rock drumming. His performance, I think, peaked at the 1984 and 5150 albums/tours. I mean, who the f**ck in Heavy Metal dared using Simms electric toms as a mainstay and it still sounding as one of the best rock albums ever done?? These albums are still one of the best over all drummers-albums of modern rock (Not to forget the VH 2 album). You cannot miss who's playing on a track if he is, and it can't be said about that many drummers.

ROFL..."Alex VH is an excellent rock drummer, but he's not a match for the musical genius, complexity, and nuance that Peart has in his drumming and percussion work." There's a Modern Drummer article in which Jeff Berlin is asked which drummer he's played with has the best time. "Alex Van Halen." T nT...you're so wrong... LMAO

Bobby Blotzer? (Go easy on me...I know..."Out of the Cellar" isn't as heralded as "1984" but, it's unique.). There must've been something going on between Simmons and Ludwig back in the day.

@evenkeel6131 6 жыл бұрын
Really? One example of someone saying he has good timing and he's "so wrong"? Peart's work is far more intricate. Not taking away anything from AVH, as he is fantastic; but there's more to it than having good timing.
@JohnJohn-ir5hw
@JohnJohn-ir5hw 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. "...but he's not a match for the musical genius...nuance..." blah, blah, blah.... He is so very wrong. Alex's skill are comparable to, for example, Carter Beauford - the complexities, intricacies and NUANCES are often obscured by how well they are executed and by how grooving and swinging they are. Peart is a POWERHOUSE drummer who plays very SIMPLE rhythms with command and accuracy. So many people praise Rush for playing in odd time signatures. Conversely and CORRECTLY, others rip on Rush for making 7/4 sound like 7/4 - AWKWARD. Van Halen are actually MORE UNDERRATED than Rush with regards to musicianship. I repeat, "so wrong". Where, I ask, does Neil Peart demonstrate "musical genius"? He's a great businessman for sure. He's a fine actor and marketeer. I wish I was too. But, WHERE can I listen to this unmatched musical genius? AVH? "Hot for Teacher" and even songs such as "Jump", "Panama" and "Unchained" demonstrate superior "musical thinking" and the "genius" in simplicity. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6uuf2SEbbKJpJY. Neal Peart is very smart and skilled. It shows in his recordings. Alex transcends rules and boundaries...this is closer to being "genius"-like than anything I've ever heard musically from the Peart. I've seen Rush twice. Cool lasers. I saw Van Halen once.... there was a ton of dirt being tossed around at that show. Come to think of it, I think Van Halen was a more skilled band but, I'd probably rather listen to Rush. Gosh... I'm so... wrong? Anyway, the point is that, yes, the dude above is wrong to start ATTACKING Alex Van Halen and attempting to compare Peart to AVH. Here's a comparison: I'm ASSUMING that you're a drummer. Go to your drums. Play along to Rush's "Tom Sawyer". Play along to Van Halen's "Feel So Good". What do you think? Play along to Rush's "Spirit of the Radio". Play along to Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher". Hey? You got that ride cymbal part down in "Hot for Teacher"? How about those fills and stops? You let me know what "intricacies" are when you have that stuff nailed and grooving. It sure as hell isn't "1-&a 2e& 3-&a 4e&"...ala "Spirit of the Radio".

As a drummer I always wondered how the hell he got the intro to sound like that cause it seemed impossible. I spent a lot of time trying to get the double bass and toms to sound like a Harley engine like they do here Then I learned that it was impossible and the drums were overdubbed lol
