He's absolutely amazing. I think he doesn't want to consciously "pursue" technical perfection, at all: he just lets himself go, unleashes his power and as a result, his playing is totally natural, even in the most risky parts - he takes all risks to maintaint the true spirit of the music he is playing. Probably he doesn't care about missing notes. And yet after taking all risks, he is technically perfect, no mistakes at all. Incredible security, probably after long hours of study, but 100 % to serve musicality, to express a lot of things, and to truly touch and capture the public. That's what makes him different from the rest of many other young, technically perfect pianists, in my opinion.

Malofeev is so spectacular and yet, at the same time, simply another product of the incredible "Russian" school which, in my opinion, has yet to be bested. The degree of artistry, confidence and technical ability is truly astounding for these students. But as Rada Bukhman said, "There is no Russian style of playing, only teaching" and this is the difference. It's worth noting that when Bolshevism came to power, they politicized / destroyed every institution in the land except the schools of dance and music. This is why Russian pianists excel - their teaching. Their schools of skating and gymnastics incorporates anatomy, ballet and history into the curriculum just as their music schools incorporate anatomy, history, art, listening and finally, technique. Again stellar performance of extremely difficult pieces that were played effortlessly. This young man is a force to be reckoned with.

@@jacobhuntington8506 No I don't. It's more a way of looking at things. The music (or ballet or gymnastics, etc) does not stand alone but is integrated into a broad program that in the end produces excellence. We were in Russia during the collapse and folks with little food or money followed theater, concerts, ballet that attracted large audiences. A huge "board" listing every cultural event of the month was visible. Is it cultural? They sure didn't denigrate their own achievements or have silly arguments over political correct art.

I've been thinking for quite a while what makes Alexander so special. It's Not his pyrotechnics. Ignore them. I doubt they matter to him all that much but people get stuck on them. I still find it hard to pin down, but I know that his lyricism stands out. It's when he plays a note or a phrase that just sinks right into our hearts. The tone he evokes, the touch. The slight pauses that stretch out the suspense until the audience is just longing for he next note and it comes.......just at the right time. I don't think Alexander could do this unless he were, as one critic put it "in the skin of the music". It has a kind of magic and mystery that is beyond words.

"I felt that I was hearing the Ravel for the first time!" Yes! Alexander has a unique way of making that happen without doing violence to the music. Indeed, in any number of old standards, he makes us feel, "Oh, so THAT'S what that's supposed to sound like." His achievements are already beyond remarkable.

Alexander plays with a freshness and spontaneity that makes one feel as if they are hearing these works for the first time. His Rachmaninoff Sonata #2 is even more electrifying than his earlier account during the Grand Piano Competition, and rivals Horowitz, in my opinion.

@bill Bloggs ...you realize you're comparing a kid that's probably 20-something or less to one of the great living pianists, right? Give this kid some time to develop before putting him in hypotheticals like that, he's incredibly talented.

Carl Hopkinson Not to mention Gaspard de la nuit - arguably one of the hardest piano compositions ever - and Rachmaninoff’s 2nd sonata - another monster piece - immediately after.

Alexander has utterly inhabited his pianism. He has integrated his own experience as pianist with the performance ethic of his mentors. This goes far beyond musicality or capability. His presence at the instrument so wholly realizes his understanding of the composition and composer that it is disarming, almost frighteningly so. This writer (a retired pianist) only wishes that Alexander would share some balanced performances of the Germanic composers -- in doing so, he will realize his rightful place as not only presenter but interpreter for the masses, who need both tension and release, both the dramatic tempered with respite. My experience with viewing Malofeev's performance videos rates among a handful of moments to remember: Gould, Horowitz, Baryshnikov, Pavarotti, Argerich. What a wonder.

The ending to Gaspar de la nuit at 42:20 is so beautiful to me. It's instills me with a kind of curious uncertainty. And the way that Malofeev let's that last note ring makes it sound like it's a guitar harmonic or something. Truly awesome.

A most beautiful pianist-flawless technique but such total feeling and absorbtion into the music- where does the the passion come from so one still still so young?

This young man's ora radiates from within to the. Outskirts beyond the universe. Well done maestro. You a great inspiration to ALL AGES. From master to another in the arts. You inspire my spirit & beyond limited human understanding. The more I studied the more I realized the more work to comprehend there is much more to execute understanding. And you have the essence Bravo!! It takes courage and tenacity to experience the unknown. Much more than understanding. To be intertwined with not to be at the right impossible moments of the "zone " that many never achieve. You are beauty in motion. Thank you from San Diego California where the sun shines with your essence.

I think you will find that Alexander will cause us all to discover new ways of seeing many of the great piano works. He will bring a new vision that will enrich, not detract, from their impact. This is already happening, as, for example, in his interpretation of Grieg's concerto. Disregard his age - it is not significant - this recital alone is sufficient to confirm his place among the great masters of his art.
