Irving Berlin, one of the most important contributors to American Popular Music and to the Great American Songbook, composed "Alexander's Ragtime Band" in 1911, and it became his first big hit (of many!). It's not an actual piece of ragtime in the traditional sense because of the form (it's a typical Tin Pan Alley song) but it rode the wave of popularity that ragtime music was experiencing in those early decades of the 20th century. It was also included in the popular 20th Century Fox film from 1938 with same title. The story written by Berlin and it featured Alice Faye, Tyrone Power, Don Ameche, and Ethel Merman.
