I've been playing double bass for nearly five years and it still impresses me how amazing the instrument sounds.

A friend is playing this on his recital, so I thought I'd come by and listen to the original. Love the Berceuse! It's probably my favorite movement.

With some good speakers, even a deaf man could enjoy this! Excellent work, love to see such dedication to this instrument. I'm not listening, I'm feeling.

Wonderful music, but I would also like some information about that bass - it has a fantastic sound!
@avbigband5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It is a very typical mid/late 19th century anonymous French bass from Mirecourt, probably made in the Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy workshop.

What have you done at 4:50? But exellence work!
@avbigband5 жыл бұрын
At 4:50 I pluck the low C with the left hand just as I start bowing it. This is so that the string is already vibrating when the bowing begins, which makes the note speak faster and more reliably. (Happens again at 4:54 and probably some other times too - it's not a conscious technique!)

Amazing. Im interested in learning more about Dirge. I tried searching for information on the song/what year was written and by who. Could you help me? Im in awe
@avbigband3 жыл бұрын
I refer you to the title of the video, which contains the answers to all your questions! Dirge is simply one of six movements from the larger work titled 'Six Vignettes'.

I saw a guy on a train with one of these, can they create something for these people because this bass is HUGE. I felt sorry for the guy, especially when it is in the case, it's like 7 feet tall.

Hey what do you use to put your dots on your fingerboard?
@avbigband5 жыл бұрын
They are wooden inlays that the luthier who built the fingerboard put in.

I love this suite! Do you happen to have an arrangement that doesn't require an extension?
@avbigband4 жыл бұрын
Emily Gage You’ll probably find that all but the 3rd mvt. (Dirge) can be adapted easily enough for an extension-free performance - often the lower notes are only there for additional resonance. Unfortunately the Dirge can’t really be arranged otherwise because of how reliant it is upon the changing pitch of the lowest open string. For mvts. 1, 2, 5 and 6 however, I would just tune the bottom string down to D, and mvt. 4 (Berceuse) is simply in standard tuning. That being said, getting an extension (with all the gates) might be the best decision you ever make and I can hardly recommend it enough...
@e.a.danh184 жыл бұрын
@@avbigband thank you, I'm excited to play your piece! I am planning on purchasing a bass with an extension eventually, definitely a worthwhile investment!
