According to the judging criteria submission attempts from the back gets you the most points in mma grappling. The thing is, Islam approached the 6th differently than the rest of the rounds. Through the middle of it when Volk got back up, Islam realized that he wouldn't get a submission, so he just started waiting for the time to go out, which is why it ended the way it did.

IMO volk is still the p4p #1 in most fans' eyes. To go up to Islam's weight and still prove doubters wrong, still out grapple some exchanges, and still keep the fight down to pretty much a stalemate makes him a great. In terms of danger, Islam was the one risking everything. Islam is the one risking his belt and his win streak. Volk was in the best position. He got to challenge for the belt, without putting his belt on the line + everybody expected him to loose. So if the fight was just somewhat competitive (something it was), he would be praised for it.

These are my two favorite fighters so I feel comfortably unbiased saying that this rematch should be immediate. No one at LW other than Dariush deserves the title shot more than Volk. He’s the clear #1 contender at LW. Plus, imagine how much better they both can still get. That fight would probably be even more Electric. I don’t know if my fingernails can handle those nerves though. I barely have any after last night. 😂

@@ImPolonn This fight really highlights how inadequate the round by round 10 point must system is. Volk almost finished Islam in the 5th by knocking him down and pouring on vicious ground and pound. That is worth the same as Islam edging out a close, low output 3rd round.

Both fighters having high defence in both striking and grappling is why this lasted 5 rounds and we got a great fight. Aggression from Oliveira did no good to him.

@Swalih M M Given, Olive is not nearly as explosive or strong as Volk. He couldn't deal with the take downs and bear hugs. Still, I agree playing it safe was the right call in Volk's fight. Probably could have gone a little more agressive at times , hough.
