Why was Alexander Zass so strong? At 5'7" and 175lbs, there should be a hard limit on the amount of strength he should be able to generate....right? Lets find out! (Also yes, that is a horse btw!)

Great video. 79 years old now and discovered isometrics at 13 in Maxick's book Muscle Control. At 15 I was wrestling catch-as-catch-can with grown and experienced men at local YMCA. Continued strength training all my life and still deadlifting a couple of 48 kg kettlebells 15 reps, carrying them 50 metres and squatting comfortably 65 kg sandbag reps. Christmas 2020 broke my ankle - both bones and injured ligaments. Ended up with pins and plate, plaster only one foot allowed on ground for four months plus and about two months boot. I bought an isometric strap online and worked out overcoming isometrics throughout with it and injured leg with muscle control exercise. Within three weeks after recovery I was in my garage gym one day and idly approached my 92 kg Rogue kettlebell which I used for two-hand deadlifts 15 reps. Without even warming up I deadlifted it with just my right hand. Never so much as raised it off the floor with one hand before. Returned to my old routine of heavy compound movements with weights and sandbag -- dead lifts, farmers carry and squats and have never even attempted that one hand DL with 92kg again. But I believe that if I did 10 months overcoming isometrics DL, Squats and shoulder press - I could do it again. Hand strength definitely the limiting factor and I'm frankly surprised I developed it so much with an isometric strap!

Gymnast, specifically ring specialist and arm wrestlers are an example of what tendon strength can do. Although the movements are different they have the same type of strength and is the same type of strenght as bruce and Zass had. Both ring training (with the proper gymnastic training method, not just the crossfit style ring workouts) and arm wrestling training focus a lot on isometrics and tendon strength and that's why they are so unbelievably strong.

As a modern day student of Zass' methods,I think it very interesting that his first exercise as a pre teen was to bend progressively thicker tree branches,then hold them in the bent position! This was probably the start of all iso training ,as we know it today! Also he evolved into bending iron and breaking chains, but surprisingly was not very" big" in his acts at around 147 pounds. His employers actually insisted that he bodybuild for a bit with standard weights so he could actually LOOK the part of the world's strongest man (eventually gained up to 165 pounds or so, now WITH biceps!

Thanks for making such an informative video! I use a forearm forklift strap when I perform overcoming isometric exercises: 30 seconds 50% effort, 30 seconds 70% effort, and then 30 seconds as hard as I can. -I particularly dread the isometric squat, but I do it anyway 🙂 Also, the awesome thing about isometrics is that you can do these exercises if you're frail and old, or if you're incredibly strong. I'll never be nearly as strong as the great Alexander Zass, but I will always try to do my best!

Great video. I'd like to add my thoughts, which are not profound or new, but may compliment the topic discussed. Many of you will be familiar with the following dichotomy: work an intense labor job that doubles as your gym time, or work an "easy" job then spend a few days a week in the gym. And you feel MUCH stronger working the labor job. Its not hard to figure why- the job may entail holding, lifting, carrying, rotating oddly shaped heavy objects over various distances, angles, elevations, et cetera. It is a full workout that a gym struggles to provide. You may not look like a bodybuilder, but you might beat one in an arm wrestle. Anyway, this information coming from a bonified strongman helps me to better understand the phenomenon. And motivates me to develop my tendons!

Tendons and bone density and structural strength. This is what Alexander Zass trained to strengthen. Everytime you break the the skeletal bones or tendons a bit or inflict stress on them they get stronger and repair the damage.
@c.galindo9639
@c.galindo9639 6 ай бұрын
It’s more so having to do with the levels of stress a person can handle in a certain area to develop whatever they’re aiming towards. With feats of strength the tendon is essential as to not have the person break themselves in attemting the feat and the muscle is just the protective layer of the tendon to keep it intact. Skeletal structure does help in some ways but a lot of knowledge has to be learnt about how muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and more work together in tandem to support each other in a specific function

The old-time strongmen were built from a different cloth than modern-day strength and fitness specialists are. In my study of people like Zass, Maxick, Sandow, Swoboda, and Atlas, one thing that strikes me is their emphasis on efficiency and total body health. In modern times, we focus so much on muscle-building that we can ignore how our workouts effect organ and glandular health. When I first read Maxick, I was thinking to myself, “bro, this sounds like a yogi wrote this book". Then I recognized the same quality existed in Atlas’s Dynamic Tension, Swoboda Conscious Evolution exercises and written texts, Zass and many others. It’s no wonder that, in my experience, these methods could mirror a lot of the same benefits as yoga does, and in many cases it can produce these results quicker. In fact, for people who practice Eastern Yoga, I would say that practicing some of the old-time Western strongman exercises and/or applying the principles to Yoga practice can really take the personal development to a different level.

My sentiments exactly. I couldn’t agree more. Also breath control, qi-gong learning to control one’s chi is pivotal to strengthening the organs of the body which contributes to enhancement of the musculature of the body. Internal exercises such as breathing are often neglected and overlooked but the body’s foundation is the nervous system. One must seek to strengthen the baseline of one’s anatomy before anything else.

This is a topic I've delved deeply into. To explain this, think of a an iron rod pressing against a piece of dry wall, the rod is denser and more rigid and will go right through when sufficient force is applied. The same can not be said of a marshmallow rod of equal proportions. Crucially, it won't matter how much FORCE is applied to the marshmallow. The force applied doesn't matter if it can't be TRANSFERED. I more practical terms; imagine doing a max squat without bracing. You wouldn't be able to right? Stiffness you can't get out of is bad, but stiffness on demand is a boon in all physical tasks. If you can't brace your abdomen you wouldn't even be able to stand up out of a chair. Having tendons and ligaments that won't give way to forces put upon them acts similarly. The muscle is the engine, but tendons, ligaments and bones are the limiters.

You forgot the part where he carried a horse off the battlefield and back to camp after it was wounded. I've always wondered why I was stronger than others my size. I'm the same size as Zass. I would pick up 385 lb car engines and carry them up driveways, get under, and lift a 59 Chevy car up on one side, that kind of stuff. When I was young it seems I always challenged myself to carry things as long as i could, hold something heavy as long as I could, etc. At age 72 I could still dead lift a 200 lb rock from the ground and put it into a truck at chest level.

I’ve wondered the same thing, and it’s an interesting topic on it’s own. It seems that chasing physical appearance and muscle hypertrophy became more in vogue beginning in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s. Health clubs began to emerge and regular folks tried to emulate whatever routines the steroid using bodybuilders we’re doing - not realizing that it might not be the best way to train for strength, performance, or overall health. Noticing a bit of a revival lately in more old school trading like calisthenics, isometrics, and strongman/functional training.

Dude look at mechanical fitters/engineers in heavy industry. We use this all the time when undoing big stuck bolts or even when tightening up big bolts, you recruit your whole body sometimes in an isometric way. Sometimes with a stubborn bolt you can be pulling on it for anything up to a minute before it finally lets go and often you have to take a few goes at it. Then you move onto the next one, for 12 hour shifts. People who work in that field are way stronger than they look, always.

If you are going to try isometrics, you owe it to yourself to try Timed Static Contraction, as taught by Drew Bayes and Steve Maxwell. It's a new approach that recruits muscle like nothing else you've experienced. It is safe, time-efficient, convenient and very effective. All you need is a strap and you can do it anywhere. It can be adapted for anyone from an elite athlete to my 92 year old mother, but in its most challenging form it is absolutely brutal. Just try it - you can thank me later!

Isometrics is the most intuitive way to train belligerent levels if strength. Can't move it? Donit anyways. Keep trying. Then one day you move it. Your motor units which are reserved for moments of adrenaline will start to activate and gradually give you more regular access to them. You become neurologically stronger along with more durrable

I have a few questions 1. Is there a way to do rotational strength exercises? I'm guessing if there is a way to lock the baseplate into a power rack or wall unit on the side or from above to pull down for something like ab crunch isometrics. 2. If I buy the stand alone handle, couldn't I try to look for the tension spring and chain, and make or find a a baseplate myself? 3. Do you think that there is a way to use the isochain to be able to build strength for pullups?
@robles1999
@robles1999 2 жыл бұрын
In regards to #2. I am new to isometric training so I decided to build one myself to give it a try before purchasing the isochain handle. I built it using a 3/4" galvanized pipe(until I can buy the stand alone isochain handle) and chain from home depot and the spring from Amazon at the link below. The chain from home depot is rated to 550 work load but you can buy a stronger one if you need to. The Amazon spring is rated to 1000 capacity - and might be the same one as on the isochain. I made the base out of some 2" x 6" pieces of wood I had laying around. I spent no more than $50 in total. I hope this helps. www.amazon.com/dp/B08M97HXSR?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

If week brain/muscle connection Maxick's book Muscle Control is masterful. At 79 I've strengh trained all my life. Three years ago "incapacitated" by broken ankle and damaged tendons, plate and pins inserted, 4 months in plaster, on crutches, only one foot touch the floor then boot for a 2 or 3 month reducing crutches dependence. Did overcoming isometrics as above but not squats until last months of recovery. Within a few weeks of weaning back onto workouts with my pair of 48 kg and my 92 Kg kettlebells I did a one hand deadlift with the 92 kg. Previously max two-hand 18 reps, never even raise it off the floor with one hand.
