From Google translate: Alexandra Botez, compared to the character Beth from Queen’s Gambit. The confessions of the Romanian champion from the USA Alexandra Botez is compared by journalists to the character Beth from Queen’s Gambit, and the champion with Romanian origins from the United States says that her roots helped her win chess competitions. From the USA, via Skype, Alexandra Botez told in the show "Interviews of Vitalie", broadcast exclusively on www.stirileprotv.ro and on the Facebook page of Pro TV News, how she started chess at the age of six, following a bet her parents made. Alexandra grew up in Canada and the United States, and at least in Canada she lived in the middle of a Romanian community, and all her friends are emigrants. For this reason, she has not experienced stereotypes or discrimination based on her origin, of which she is very proud, she says. Vitalie Cojocari: Why were you compared to the heroine of "Quenn's Gambit"? Alexandra Botez: “I've been playing chess since I was six years old and I've made a lot of videos on youtube and Twitch, and when you look for chess and see who plays chess, you find me, and I think that's why everyone wants to talk with me. The character Beth Harmon, brings a lot with me when I was younger and I participated in many competitions, the film is the most real about everything that happens in this show " Vitalie: Your parents left Romania, what is your family's story? Alexandra Botez: “My parents live in the States and they moved in the same year I was born in the USA, when I stayed in Canada I lived in a community of many Romanians, who also moved from Romania and many have even gone back now. " Vitalie: How did you manage to keep your Romanian language so well? Alexandra Botez: “I have only been to Romania twice, but all my best friends speak Romanian, and my parents and grandparents, and I have practiced more, but often I do not talk about more complicated things in Romanian or I do so, a little Romanian with English, when I forget another word ” Vitalie: Why did you start playing chess at the age of 6? Alexandra Botez: “Whenever someone in the States asks me why I play chess, I explain to them that in Romania there is a chess culture that is much richer than in the States or in Canada, in Canada and in the States everyone says that chess players are geeks, but in Romania my grandparents both played, so my grandmother taught my father and my father taught me when I was six, and my father is very competitive, and he made a bet with my mother and said I would learn it, and in two weeks if he beats you, he will continue to train in chess. And then I beat my mother, who didn't know how to play, but my father made fun of me, and then I went on and won the national team when I was eight and I've played so far. I won in the girls, 10 years and younger, in Canada, the first place, in my first tournament. ” Vitalie: And the fact that you have Romanian roots, do you think it helped you? Alexandra Botez: "Most Canadians who played chess were either from Europe, Romania, Ukraine, Russia or China, so there weren't that many Canadians born in Canada for many generations, so I think it's something with a different culture." Vitalie: I want you to tell me what you find in Queen’s Gambit and you think it looks like you ... Alexandra Botez: “I saw that she was obsessed with playing chess and she brought it with me when I was in high school and I was studying for nationals and my mother argued with me and told me that I had to be more social, to play with friends, but I was like that. so focused on chess that I couldn't see anything else, and when I saw so many similarities, I really saw myself in it. ” Vitalie: Did you face stereotypes when people found out you were from Romania? Alexandra Botez: “Honestly, I think the world is very interested, my friends, where everyone comes from, because we have a lot of friends who come from another country, so I think the world likes to find someone who is from another country. In the society in which I grew up there were so many immigrants, many Romanians, so I had no such experience. ”

It's nice to see Alexandra speaking Romanian, the language of her ancestors. Romanian is a Romance language like Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Catalan, carrying rich cultural heritage. As a native Spanish speaker, only a few words (like 10%) of this interview sound familiar to me (besides some English words used). Romanian is the language that diverged the most from Vulgar Latin. In comparison, I can understand about 70% of Portuguese.

My father speaks Romanian and he was able to communicate with my Catalan girlfriend's father. Catalan is more similar to Romanian than Spanish. Many say the opposite, that Romanian is the closest language to Latin.
@teddy981007 ай бұрын
Actually not, romanian if we compare it grammatically to latin it's the most similar to it, preserving the neuter gender and the cases and also the article at the end of the word. When it comes to vocabulary, yes, Romanian has a lot of other influences but for almost any word of another origin there are synonyms. If we strip romanian of the words of other origins, diacritics and the case system it sounds and feels almost like a dialect of italian, the language which it is the closest to it (if we exclude other balkan romance languages like aromanian etc.). The reason why you do not understand romanian as well is the same reason why you do not understand latin (the case system), and also like I said the diacritics and the words of other origins.
