If you have badly textured risers a person could cut thin luan to fit each riser and just brad-nail it on. The stickers would then have a smooth finish to a adhere to.

Or sand the risers. They could always be repainted the same brown. Most paint companies will color match existing paint.

@@eileendenton5973 those stair riser stickers don't come cheap when I looked for some. Paint would be cheaper.

@@sarahholland2600 you could use normal Fablon/DC Fix/Contact Paper, it doesn't have to be specifically for stairs.

The makeover even made the unfinished pine handrail look like a super cute style choice, rather than just a cheap/non matching handrail! Love it!

Yay for the inspiration! It motivated me to put some pre-pasted white beadboard wallpaper on the first 4 steps of my staircase. The staircase turns after those steps, so I only did the ones we can see from the living room. I'd been planning to do it for so long, and thanks to you I finally did. And it looks great! I love it. I have an old dark narrow stairway up to my second floor. The stairs are painted a very dark gray. This is a clever way to make it look 100% better. I can't wait to get started.. Thank you for all the great ideas

Wow! What an unbelievable transformation in such a short amount of time! It’s so much brighter and pleasant now! I feel like I need to make these changes to my basement stairs ASAP. Hey there! Love the stairs! Was always going to paint the risers on the stairs when living in a basement apartment. This would've been much easier. Quick tip. When hanging art use two screws or nails. I space them the width of my small level so I don't have to get out the big guy. This keeps the pics from moving so you are not straightening them all the time. Especially on a stair wall. Best wishes to you.

You can cut a slit or an “X” over the bubble and push it down to make it as flat as possible, too. love the decals.

Overall it is a good makeover. The snowshoe wall needed paint and where the door frames/trim met the wall needed caulk. It would have added sparkle and improved the sense of clean and fresh.

Soooo.... drilling and paint is more invasive than I was expecting when you mentioned renter friendly and not being too damaging. Though white paint does make the entryway so much better
