This is a war time song...many girls succumbed to this...imagine the scenario: a young innocent goodlooking girl and a young cleancut boy in an army uniform in a redtaurant. The boy says to the girl if i ho on that boat i dont know if I'll ever come back alive or not...does the song youll never know...this was the cause of the babyboom or babyboomers as the children born from this scenario Wonderful song nevertheless

Just reviewed soprano Renee Fleming in recital at LA Opera! AWESOME!! -- LIVING OUT LOUD OPERA REVIEW : American Soprano Renée Fleming Performs a Spectacular Concert at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion - By Humberto Capiro -- Entering the stage in a spectacular light gray print dress accented by a long shawl made up of dark grey, wide ribbons, Ms. Fleming began the evening with fine renditions of the baroque pieces “Ombra mai fu” and “Bel piacere e godere” by German composer George Frideric Händel. She was accompanied masterfully for the evening by German pianist Hartmut Höll who has worked with her for many years, as well as other word class opera singers. One of the highlights of the evening came next, in a series of songs by German composer and pianist of the Romantic period, Johannes Brahms. They included “Mondnacht”, “Ständchen” and “Wiegenlied” from Five Songs, “Die Mainacht” from Four Songs, “Da unten im Tale” from 49 German Folksongs, “Meine Liebe ist grün” from Nine Songs and “Vergebliches Ständchen” from Five Romances and Songs. Although each short in duration, these beautiful songs stood out in interpretation and theme, like a delicious sample of musical hors d’oeuvres thanks to Fleming’s performance. Her pianissimos were soft, gentle but projected well into the audience, with interpretations that were full of passion and expression and connected in an intimate level with the audience. www.lol-la.com/review-american-soprano-renee-fleming-performs-a-spectacular-concert-at-dorothy-chandler-pavilion/

A great performance of one of the most beautiful songs in the "Great American Song Book." IMHO is it probably Harry Warren's best melody, and the Mack Gordon lyrics add to its beauty. This may be the best performance of it I've ever heard. Fantastic. Renée Fleming shows that opera singers can sing traditional popular music, too, and do it well.

By this song scene, I'm pretty convinced Elisa is a mermaid due to the allusions: opening water scene, her fascination with water, Elisa has symmetrical gill-scars, she's mute but has beautiful "inner" voice. At the end when he heals her wounds and the scars reversed back to gills further confirmed that headcanon. Still fighting with my friend who went to see this movie with me about this though lol
