There lies the question I have for Ulta, (I know you only worked there I’m not directing this at you, I was just wondering if you questioned it also) how do they make you spend so much money for free samples? It’s never made sense to me. Free is free and the companies give them to the stores to give out free yet with Ulta you have to spend so much money to get them. It just always boggled my mind.

It feels like you got a discount when in reality, you spent more than you wanted to. The deals with brands tends to be "you spend $50 with tarte/ you get a free tarte sample." If they are then told if you spend xyz then you get a free sample then many people will subconsciously believe it's a deal and so will purchase more just to get the sample. If they were just free with any purchase then low spenders would also get them, having to pay to be able to receive a sample may make people feel more exclusive. There's lots of psychology and research and thought behind most marketing and even how shops work

At this point, I think it’s just to get you to sign up for their rewards programs or to have you buy more product (either to get points to redeem a sample or to get a sample advertised as free with the product.)

I work for Dillard's in fragrance & every week w our shipments we get free gifts w purchase to give customers & the shower gels, lotions, small perfums are SO much bigger than any of these. I watched an "influencer" unbox this calendar not too long ago and his reaction to it kinda shocked me lol. This is priced at almost 170 dollars...thats not cheap! This influencer didnt really get upset or side eye anything in here! This is easily 75% minis..cmon yall lol. Thats a lot to pay for some samples. And I normally dont post responses but cmon lol. My theory on the lack of lid with the brow pencil, since it seems no one's has one: the pencils wouldn't fit in the box with the lid on, so Benefit's solution was to pull the lids off as they packaged them so they wouldn't have to spend more money redesigning the box and/or actually giving the purchaser something of actual value.

I kind of wonder if the plastic polymer can't take that heat and be that size for a lid. Like there's enough for the brow housing, but for the lid it could be too brittle. The sides would be too thin and plastics can be more persnickety than you would think.

I will say, even when their calendars are......not amazing, I have such a soft spot for Benefit. It was the first higher-end cosmetic brand I used in my late teens, and I loved their kitschy packaging and fun products. If I've learnt anything from last year, all of these Advent calendars are just a place for companies to offload their extra samples. It is rare nowadays to find a Advent calendar that has more than 25% full size or travel-sized products. It's usually all samples or parts of a set split over several days. That's all profit it can't possibly cost them anything because they've already got all of these samples they just need to pay for the Box to be made.

I have a cardboard box upstairs to put stuff in that needs to go downstairs. And one downstairs for stuff that needs to go upstairs. Tbf both end up sitting around gathering fluff… the novelty of the basket might help me keep on track. Maybe. Xxx
