Great and accurate explanation of Mall Goth. I was a teenager in the 90’s and can confirm it was a thing. There was a hot minute where everyone in school got bit by the Hot topic fashion bug no matter what they listened to. But us weirdos were cutting the crotch and feet off our fishnet stockings and wearing them as tops before HT was widely available.

I think this is more femme and DIY/thrifted in aesthetic than proper mallgoth, which in turn makes it *way* more appealing. The plaid skirt reminds me of it the most. Shirt untucked is probably more historically accurate. The key items are humongous, ground-sweeping pants, either a tiny tee or something very baggy, low-rise flare bondage pants, black rubber bracelets and cuffs with spikes, aaaand a wallet chain. And random zippers on things!

This took me back. I was a mall goth: in my teen years little goth me congregated with the other teen goths at the mall on Saturday nights where we would hang out, visit spencers & hot topic, play arcade games, and get chased around by the mall cop. I was a very DIY goth mostly using thrifted stuff and creativity like wearing a skull patterned shoelace as a choker. 😅😅 I am glad that the aesthetic lives on, even if my own style has expanded.

This comment was 2 years ago, just curious are you still boho? I'm just fascinated someone else went through a similar transition. I was emo/goth in 7th - 9th grades, but started dressing a bit more trendy after that, kind of a mix of scene and y2k which were popular back then. I had both zebra print skinny jeans and skirts, band tees, and shutter shades, but also had Hollister blue jean skirts and the v-neck tops with a lace tank top layered underneath. Then in college I thought I finally discovered my personal style and was a boho hippie for several years. I still liked & appreciated all the emo/goth/alt looks on Instagram, but I thought that wasn't me and that I couldn't pull it off. I was going through a very natural phase, didn't want to die my hair anymore, didn't wear makeup anymore, just wanted to wear comfy flowy loose garments all the time which was a big change from my previous styles of tight fitting layers. Part of what changed is when I got a full time job, that fashion wasn't particularly practical anymore. All of sudden, I'm wearing band tees, skinny jeans, and combat boots to work and then buying more stuff like that so I have somewhat stylish outfits for work. I started wearing boho stuff less even on the weekends and started exploring alternative fashion again because I was finding myself attracted to it like I'm 13 all over again and loving how I look in all black. Now I'm in my 30's and most of my daily clothes are black, plaid skirts, fishnets, ripped skinny jeans, etc. I get called goth, but I'm not trad goth at all. I still don't wear makeup. I consider it a mix of emo/punk/grunge/goth fashions, I just wear whatever I like and unlike before, I feel like it actually works for me now? I still have some of my boho clothes, but they don't feel like me anymore. I try to wear them and it feels like a costume now. Idk why. I'd love to explore whimsigoth a bit more and see if I can't incorporate some of those clothes into my new wardrobe. My inner child is so happy though. I always wanted Demonias and Tripp when I was a little emo/goth kid, but it was too expensive then and now I have these things in my closet.

i love this video so much it really accurately explains the term mall goth in a non offensive way. there is nothing worse than people choosing to wear fashion without knowing it’s history. especially because 90s mall goths and nu metal artists were pretty marginalized by lots of christian communities and people in general in the US. From Marylin Manson being blamed for columbine and bands like coal chamber, Kittie and korn being reviled by parents. It’s the worse when people make trends of stuff that people were bullied for in the past so really appreciate the pretty extensive knowledge on the mall goth style💕💕

Oh wow- what a great box- and such good value. You might be able to attach a longer handle to the bag and make it a cross body. Sometimes you get detachable extra ones with other bags. I have just got a pink bag that came with a chain handle, a short handle AND a long one 😂 Anyway- loved this- and I'm so pleased that this box worked out for you.

Put your hair upp in a chignon style and do a wine red lip also you need something like a spiderweb necklace, possibly making some moon symbol high on top of your cheek, would also do a dark blue eyeshadow with a bit of gunmetal shine ( can get that with vaseline btw), possibly fingerless gloves and a dark nailpolish of some kind.
