I’m friends with a guy who is a truck and light vehicle mechanic, trade qualified for 50 years. He says diesel oil is better for gas engines because of the diesel additives provide better cleaning action compared to gasoline oil. He recommends this cleaning method over using a tradition engine oil flush.

I think people have such strong opinions on oil (and filters) because they don't know any better. Paying the most for the 'best' whatever helps people feel better, which is what one needs if they don't know any better. I've always used cheap oil and filters and never had an engine problem, but I always change oil every 5k miles.

W40 weight is better for diesel and older cars. I switched to 5w40 rotella T6 in my vw tdi because 5w3o was leading to reports failed camshafts, so vw put out bulletin to go to heavier weight oil . And then I decided use the same T6 in my old Yukon xl 5.3l with 200,000 miles to stay off the dreaded failed lifters.

Older diesel oils had a higher zddp zinc content which would do the gas engine good but harm catalytic converters on gas engines. Todays diesels are now equipped catalytic converters so I'm sure the oil formulation has been modified to accommodate newer emission equipped diesels.

Rotella T4 15W40 is the mineral oil version. T5 is the synthetic blend version. T6 5W40 is the synthetic version. Rotella now makes a 15W40 also. In the semis, we use 5W40 to help with fuel mileage. Base oil is base oil. The difference between oil for gasoline versus diesel engines is the additive packages.

The “SN” ratings on diesel oils such as Delo, means that it has additives to handle gasoline contaminates, but it also means that the oil needs to reduce the amount on anti-wear additives (such as “Zinc”) in order to maintain the “SN” rating. So any “SN” rated diesel oil only has as much anti wear additives as gasoline oil. That is why Rottela dropped the “SN” rating on all their diesel oil and created the “Gas truck oil” separately for gasoline powered engines. In doing so, Rottela diesel oil also dropped the additives that handle gas contaminates. So a Delo with an “SN” rating is a multi engine type oil with additives to handle both diesel & gas contaminates. So when using diesel oil in a gasoline engine these days you have a choice, do I use a “SN” rated diesel oil with reduced anti wear additives/Zinc, or do I use “C” rated Rottela that only handles diesel contaminates and needs to be changed out more frequently before the gas contaminates start breaking down the oil. The link below will show you an oil analysis explaining the differences in anti wear additives between “SN” rated Delo & “C” rated Rottela. kzbin.info/www/bejne/il7cpWiXZsiKmpY

The diesel lube can't deal with varnish? I think The only contaminate that diesel doesn't make as gas is varnish, since diesel makes soot and lacker, but don't make varnish. Varnish are partially burnt gasoline, that collects in form of a polymer of High molecule Weight and are polar with negative charge wich makes It adhere to metal surfaces.

I've been using Shell Rotella T6 in my Caravan for years. Same with my 2016 Chev Silverado. And in my BMW 318i. It's not a bad idea actually. Some of the oil passages in some engines (ie Chrysler/Yamaha V6's) have pretty small oil passages and are prone to sludging up, so any oil that has extra detergents to keep particulates down is a good idea.

Been using T6 in my 2002 mercedes ML320 since 96k miles. This vehicle gets almost abused (very well maintained though). When I’m pulling heavy loads (5,000 to 7,000 lbs) it spends hours at WOT on the interstate. Now it has 300k on it and still running strong. It’s the boat hauler, stump grinder hauler & I have tugged a 40 foot trash container around job sites several times. I had to replace the FSS sensor in it @ 275k due to leaks which required removing the inspections pan and the bottom end looked like a well maintained 50-75 thousand mile engine. I highly recommend using T6 5W-40 in gas engines, especially the Mercedes 3.2, 3.5 & 5 liter engines. The only negative is I think the cats are starting to clog but hey, they are original 300k mile cats.

Just for the sake of science, might as well state the facts from a lubrication engineering standpoint. Long term should negatively impact ring life due to the extra overbase additives. Also the ZDDP additive could affect your catalytic converter over time due to the sulfur content of gasoline fuel. However a one oil change interval or short term use should be okay and actually could help clean soot from the engine, but long term is a bad idea.

I suggested him to switch to Shell Rotella T6 10w-30 and it greatly suppressed the lifter tap. Engine is still running strong at 230,000+ miles, and although fuel economy is slightly decreased from the thicker oil it is well worth the switch. since no one mentioned it, its only bad if you have a catalytic converter, the oil contains ZDDP (a form of zinc) to decrease engine wear, and it will clog a cat over time. thats the only downside.

If you have an older car with a flat tappet camshaft I think this is the way to go. Newer oils don't have anywhere near the Zinc content the older oils did. Diesel engine oil still has high content of that and also is very high in detergents.

Disel engine oil and gas engine oil is exactly the same thing except for one part disel engines produce soot which the oil traps gas engines turn oil into acid over time that's why breakdown happens if maintenance is not done when needed no problem using disel oil on a gas engines just have to replace the oil a bit more sooner than intended

Heavy duty diesel oil is just really thick oil, works damn good in the summer time. In the winter I like to run 10w-30. The heavy duty diesel oil may actually be better for your gasoline engine than the suggested oil depending on how you use the truck.
@therealRustyShackleford

Running 5w-40 would be better for cold starts than 10w-30 and the oil should get up to normal operating temperatures as long as the cooling system is working correctly so you wouldn't actually need the 30 weight in the winter.

Modern Cummins heavy duty truck engines like the X-15 use 10-30 diesel engine oil these days plus diesel fuel contains way less sulphur than it used to back in the day so diesel engines run cleaner and don't need as many additives anymore. Gas and Diesel oils are much closer in specs now.

Use the recommended viscosity...Do not use a heavier viscosity than manufacturers call for...it will reduce oil flow and wear down oil pump engine will overheat with poor circulation...I read Dexos 1 is for gasoline Dexos 2 is for diesel...I understand Dexos 2 has higher additives for cleaner and lubricant performance...Most important is change oil filter every 2 to 3 thousand miles...oil filters easily clog restricting oil flow causing heavy wear and overheating...autos over 75,000 miles burn dirty clogging oil filter...keep oil flowing keep oil filter clean...dirty oil filters reduce gas mileage...don't waste gas on dirty oil filter...oils rated 10 to 20,000 are deceptive...the oil filter still must be changed after 2 to 3000 miles for good oil flow through engine...dirty oil filters will overheat and destroy engines...

I can understand that it may work better for people and reduces lifter tick and stuff, but I would still alternate between this and a regular gasoline motor oil. Diesel motor oil isn't held to the same cleanliness standard as gasoline engine oil so it can often cause gunk build up in the engine--esp over a long period of time. So use a regular oil to clean it out if you are really intent on using the diesel oil. Or maybe switch to a heavier weight or a higher additive package oil like using Pennzoil Ultra plat synth instead of just plat synth.
