You went the wrong direction when you left the train station, once you headed towards the shopping centre you were destined to doom and gloom. The housing estates you visited were Conniburrow and Downsbarn. Both are part of the early development stage and have been neglected by the council. If you had either gone straight through the town centre or turned up hill where you decided to turn down hill, you would have arrived at Campbell park, a wonderful open parkland and a perfect viewing place to see how green Milton Keynes really is.

@@marks-0-0 It's no where near up to Dutch standards. For a start it is set up for leisure rather than efficient transport. Dutch bike lanes take the most direct routes, & have priority at junctions. It is so easy to make fun of Milton Keynes, usually by people who have never been. I lived there for a few years in the early 80's when it was just getting going and it was a good place to be for a young family. We lived a 15 minute walk from the city centre, next to the Grand Union canal, overlooking fields. The grid system makes it a very easy place to get around too. It has its problems of course, where doesn't! This hasn't done it justice really, i hope for better in part 2.

Some pretty forward looking town planning went on in developing Milton Keynes, let down in more recent years with a relaxation of requirements. As new town projects went it was pretty successful. It's got a fantastic Art Gallery, great Theatre (assuming it survives covid) and a beautiful public space in Campbell Park and a number of listed modern architectural gems. A pity so many people (over 50 years since it was founded) still get snobby about the place.

One of the most annoying things must be those uphill / downhill parts at almost every underpass, bridge or junction for the cyclists, while the cars have perfectly flat roads. Bike lanes designed by people who don't ride bikes.

Not as annoying as dicing with death on a bicycle along the roads in most other cities. You can travel door to door anywhere in MK by bicycle on redways in safety away from cars surrounded by trees and lawns... that sounds pretty good to me.

Yes, of course, if the alternative is sharing a 50mph road with cars, then even a poorly designed cycle path is better. The speed limits must be lower, and the roads designed differently, to make a solution without segregated networks safe for cyclists.

Bit disappointed you didn't bother to figure out what might be good about the 'redways' (not red routes, that was a scheme to try keep clear major road routes in London during the 90s). I could have taken you to some great places on the redways, and I haven't lived there since '90. I mean, yeah the bits you've ridden here are grim. But you have no context. Wolverton, say, you said was a village. It had railway works until about '88, a sizeable working class victorian town, second only to Doncaster, where all the carriageworks were done for BR and the private railways from London to Liverpool before that. It also boasted a pretty large paperworks called McCorquerdales. I grew up seeing all the men streaming out at 4.30 on bikes and on foot like something out of Lowry. There's a great Musuem just outside Wolverton that has tons of interesting things including a seagoing tug boat that was built in MK, as far from the sea as you can get, some ancient farm machinery and loads of telephone exchange equipment from Bletchley Park. In the time it took you to get lost in Downs Barn, you could have found the first buddhist Stoupa built in the western hemishphere at Willen, with it's monastic temple attached, or the place where a revolutionary kind of plough was discovered bricked up in an old barn by a disgruntled inventor. You might have found the Tree Catherdral near that, or the shining example of Hook's 17th century architecture, boasting exquisite marble work and a font by Grinling Gibbons, in a tiny church there.You could have found some great modernist architecture at Linford, and seen ancient woodland on the way (Linford Woods which you said you didn't want to see). The Open University, which is definitely part of the democratic utopian ideals of the original plan for the city, would be too far for a cyclist of your determination. You might have had pointed out that there are NO BILLBOARDS anywhere, because they decided to just not have them thanks very much. If you'd bothered to get someone who knows this stuff to ride with you. I would have probably led you to my old town Stony Stratford, which is in the Domesday book, an ancient inn town, whcer the little princes stayed before being murdered in the Tower of london, the inns that give rise to the phrase 'Cock & Bull Story' and 'Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross'. We would have got there along some parts of the Linear Park, a belt of green around the city that ensures plants not buildings will endure along the circumference of the city, that is entirely rideable. I would have taken you to see some decent public art, some formerly liberal state schools that had no uniforms or titles to separate teachers and students, the balancing lakes that allowed the city to built on the formerly flood-prone areas (very Dutch). The skate spots that made MK one of the best skateboarding hotspots in the country. The places where the counter culture was happening back when i lived there. But you didn't bother bringing a map, or any actual awareness of what you're blathering on about. And you never asked anyone who knows about it to fill you in. Parklife!
@helenswan7053 жыл бұрын
What a great write up. my partner of long ago lived in Stony Stratford, a surprisingly pretty little place, and loved the redways. Although we both agreed MK was a bit of a dump. You cannot create culture and a town in a few decades. it takes a few decades more. Its a weird thing to build a town all at once. In t'old days, of course that never happened! it s a bit like genetic engineering. Bypassing the usual timeworn channels. Anyway it's great to hear your story and your reading of the situation, thank you very much for taking the time.

His current route seems to be neatly avoiding Campbell Park which is also a shame - maybe not the most exciting park in the world but it does have some cool art, is largely downhill from his current position and, well, is a lot more interesting than the houing estate he ends up in at the end of Pt 1!

Aside from using a car, bikes are not the best mode of transport in MK. Electric bike and increasingly electric scooter shares seem to be the alternative way to travel in mk now, and generally scooters are okay to ride on all paths. So, I'm not surprised you think the redways are a bit shit, because they kind of are. They're not designed for an easy commute for the cyclist, but a designated route to keep cyclists off the main roads, because in most places outside of Milton Keynes central, you can drive close to the national speed limit, and that could endanger cyclists, or at worst slow down people in cars! Cars really are king in this city.

Towards the end Alexei used the adjective "dystopian". How appropriate. Modernist architecture is always the same. Somewhat attractive on the nice shiny architects plan, but a grim, scruffy, and soul destroying reality by a decade or so after it's construction.
