this man is unforgettable!.... is so cruel and ironic that a man with that quality had so short professional life cause physical problems. He had so natural talent and a singular feeling performing music like no one else still today. He was really exceptional, one in a million. I wonder all that he could have done skating today or if he had not had physical problems...

I remember watching this final live on Eurosport and was sobbing like a child it was that touching. He brought emotions and art to the dancefloor that no skater ever managed to do. He wasn't the judges champion that night but he was the people's champion. His performances were epic and it's such a shame he had to retire so young. I'm watching Sochi 2014 and not feeling there's as much talent as before. Shame Alexei couldn't compete home, he would have delivered a breathtaking routine. We will always love you Alexei Yagudin.

mine too. He brought the art back into ice skating. Most skater (especially Plushenko) are good in the technical aspect, but they don't bring this spark on the ice, which makes you feel the performance. Yagudin had everything, technically perfect, but especially someone who made you feel something during his performances. He always told a story, which has become very rare since they judge mostly based on technical abilities. Ice Skating has become very boring now.

I just want to add here that I am happy to see Alexei smiling at the end of this performance. He did the best he could with the foot injury and who knows if his hip was painful too. I totally disagree with you. Alexei won the wc 3 times until he lost the title to Plushenko in 2001. Then later that year Alexei came back and defeated him and won the Grand Prix, them beat him in the 2002 Olympics. He would of beat him in the 2002 worlds (with those highest scores ever in history) but Plushenko said he hurt his knee. When they went pro Alexei beat him over and over again. There is no way Plushenko was better.
Yes, that is a very good summation, TubeMouse. Alexei's performances have more depth. His skating serves the music and creates emotion, whereas with Plushenko it is more often the case that the music is there to serve him.
@USFanLovesMinHo12 жыл бұрын
So true, so very true!
@USFanLovesMinHo12 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but when Plushenko won the Olympics he did not compete against Alexei. In order to be the best, you have to beat the best and in their primes Alexei was by far the better skater. Alexei's scores in the Olympics and in 2002 WC set new records. Plus Plushenko was way too girly for my taste.

I like that comparison. I think the judges these days tend to go more with the technical side of things though but I suppose they have to in some ways. It's that question of whether it is more a sport than an art form or equally both and, ultimately, if it's being judged as a sport then artistry will probably always come second to jumps and technique. I don't know if you've ever seen Jan Hoffman's routines but he is a prime example of what happens when you have one skill without the other.
@paskatefan12 жыл бұрын
While I respect Plushy & Alexei's talents and overall accomplishments, I agree that Todd should have won the silver medal @ these Worlds. Alexei's 2000 Skate Canada performance of this was the best.

So frustrating! These commentators need to keep it to a minimum. I want to enjoy the beautiful Hans Zimmer score and watch Alexei interpret it. We get to hear about where he trains, his mother’s cooking, and his personal life about his father walking out on him during beautiful climactic moments of the program. Can’t they wait til the music ends? I get that technical comments need to be made and letting us know he is skating with an injury that makes certain jumps hard. Just keep it to a minimal and let us watch and listen to this score. Can’t imagine how intense it would be to watch this live without hearing this excess distracting info.
@Alibabble18 жыл бұрын
I take it he was injured that year? He didn't seem his normal self. The programme just lacked that extra spark he normally has when he's on fire. He's still a phenomenal skater, though. His footwork is amazing; I thought that Brian Joubert can do good footwork, but Alexei must've given him a good few pointers. Thanks for the video, though!

personally, I think Yagudin and Plushenko are equally good. It's just that they had such different styles. Yagudin is more artistic in a classical sense ( he could have had a remarkable career in the ballet had he not chosen figure skating) whereas Plushenko is more of a showman ( he really came into his own in 2001). They were rivals and so they're very often compared but to me Lambiel is closer to Yagudin's particular brand of artistic sensibility. Haven't found one similar to Plushenko, yet.

Hi again CaramelChai. Apologies! I've now watched the correct routine. The LP was better than Gypsy Dance but I think I realise what the problem is for me. Evgeni's arms tend to be rather stiff and I much prefer a more balletic approach. I think he seems to excel more at the comedy elements (and enjoy them; witness his Tom Jones routine!). His jumps are amazing and there are times when he seems to have greater expression but others where he reminds me more of Jan Hoffman's skating style.

@TheTubeMouse15 жыл бұрын
Hi CaramelChai, did you mean Plushenko's Gypsy Dance? He's definitely expressive but I think Yagudin is more so. What I find with Plushenko is that his arm movements and facial expressions seem to be exaggerated almost in a silent film style of gesture, so that the emotion of the routine is overwhelmed rather than communicated. I find he doesn't engage me in the performance in the way that Yagudin does although I admire both as skaters. He's still expressive, but less so I feel, than Yagudin.
@EricLensher12 жыл бұрын
@luisnazariodalima1 I m desagree. Plushenko is one of the best skaters ever exist. He ´s more elegant and the best performer-showman. In actuallity, he still is a winner and continues making history (this year, too, with 30 years old) Yagudin was good, in the past, but Plushenko (past and present)

Have you ever seen Johnny Weir?? Weir could never match Yagudin technically, but artistically, Weir is in a class all by himself...completely unafraid to be himself, and do what he loves, how he loves to do it. Weir is my favourite skater, with yagudin right behind him. No one has the power and presence Yagudin had..those jumps were MASSIVE. But I LOVE this program.
