I am a traditionalist and never liked that angle. As a coach, I can never tell from the new WTT's camera angle if the serves were legal from both sides. Also, I cannot judge the spins, speed and the power of both players with the ball and their movements. Coaches like me use the vertical angle to the net rather than perpendicular to dissect the match for game films so I can use them to teach my students. Even with professional matches for upcoming preparations for drills, serves and matches for their future events. In order to attract new fans to Table Tennis by WTT, they really pissed off a lot of the traditional fans who supported them. That's not very good with a lot of things that they are doing.

Can Hugo plays like this all the time? That's the $64,000 question that I will like to see to be answered. @@marcostripoli2849 Why was it called the WTT CONTENDER SILLY BOY???? And the major tournament as WTT GRAND SLAM or World Event??? NOTED THE DIFFERENCES???? At the Grand slam, all top players unless they are injured, must be ENTERED. So how many top 10 or even top 16 players entered in Tunis. Hmmm, let's count them out shall we? Harimoto (#4), Hugo (#6), Lin Guoyuan (#12), Chuang Chih-Yuan (#16). There were only 4 of them. Hugo was the highest seed at #2 left against Lebrun. Come on now. Those tournaments were supposed to be for the juniors in the ITTF days. The professionals have plenty of their own events to compete without taking valuable points away from other young players looking for experiences. It is no different than having a Djokovic, a Nadal, a Medvedev, or any top 10 players in Professional Men's Tennis in a secondary tournament against the lower ranked players to get easy points. The gap between the very top table tennis players are very, very wide. I would say more than any other sports except for professional football in Europe. You have your right to say anything. I just do not think that the WTT changed the old ITTF Junior/Secondary Tournaments now to accept top players to compete is very fair indeed.

A 6th Ranked player beating someone below 50th. Sure. Also someone on the ITTF circuit for almost 10 years beating the current top Junior at 19 years old. That should be expected. Then again, had Alexis won the first set when he didn't choke, also led to him losing his focus completely where he gift wrapped at least 8 points on his serves ..... I have YET TO SEE HUGO BEING CONSISTENT rather than just ONE EVENT. That's the difference between being great and THE BEST.

The problem with Hugo is that he is not consistent. There was one rare tournament where he blew everyone including the top players from the PRC team out of the water, then he faltered badly afterwards with the PRC team studied his game films. Also Hugo is too predictable of the tactics so most would counter his style accordingly. Beating the top players one time is great, but to do it consistently like a Timo Boll, that's another level altogether. Also Hugo has beaten a young Alexis, the next time around, I expected a lot closer than a 4-1 score. By the way, it wasn't that one-sided as Alexis almost took the open set away and barely lost in Deuces.

And i wouldnt say that Hugos draw was easy, he played all Asian players beside the final, they arent a piece of Cake to beat. Also in an othee tournament harimoto might get lucky that he doent have to ay fan zhendong in the first round i mean truls, in the world championships had the easiest part of the draw, yes boll, aruna, etc are all top players, but Boll is 41 and no in his prime quadri can lose to anyone truls had no chinese player in his draw until the final where as Hugo had lin gaoyuan, wang chuqin, Fan zhendong and Liang jingkun. @@GhanaTableTennis Harimoto is a better player than Hugo but also he is just as inconsistent. The hard ABS plastic ball suit the close to the table chop blocks female game better to him. When he is away from the table, he is in huge trouble because of his terrible footwork. If I am preparing game films for my players against Harimoto. It is not that hard, stay away from his powerful backhand. Make sure to place the ball carefully at wide angles to make him move away from his comfort zone. Don't let him freewheeling by his chiquita flip. Fluster him to change his momentum by frustrating him and not encourage his streaky runs and loud 'cho-le'. You have to be crafty both in tactics and mental games to beat these players. Come to think of it, for Hugo and Harimoto, not that difficult. Actually, he is never the best conditioned player. If he has to change so many shirts in a single match compared with others. That means he easily over-exerted himself or being too one-sided playing a physical, taxing style which he would completely wore down if the match extended to 6 or 7 sets. I believed that anything that Hugo played over 5 sets in the ITTF/WTT top ranked tournaments, are not really that great.

Most professional like Hugo would peak at their late 20s, which gave him another 4 years or so. Kanak is only 2 years older than Alexis and around the same age as Fan. It is like having a Top 10 Tennis players playing the Challengers and the second level circuits. In World Table Tennis where the levels are so much defined from the lower 100 to 500 ranked players, and probably at least 4 to 5 levels inside the top 100. You can say that for Hugo and Harimoto playing those junior players, that SHOULD be a cakewalk for them. Really, those tournaments are for up and comers who would be great in the future and not using them to steal ranking points away by those top 10 players. Hugo is currently ranked 6th in the world. This is why there is ONLY ONE PLAYER who beat Ma Long, Fan Zhendong and Xu Xin only ONCE in their CAREER IN Franziska. But to be the very best, you have to beat them again and again. Right now, I just have seen anyone yet. With the upcoming retirement of Xu Xin and Ma Long. Fan Zhendong would be EVEN better and also with the young PRC squad coming to the force in their early 20s. Let's see if the rest of the world has the answer for them.

Lebrun doesn't return Calderano's serve with confidence. And if you give Calderano a chance at a forehand loop, it's guaranteed to come fast and hard. On return of serve, Calderano does the chiquita with pressure or he can push the ball awkwardly long into Lebrun's backhand. So Lebrun almost didn't get to forehand loop. But these are problems that Lebrun can fix with coaching, so it won't be as one-sided next time!

No i think actually after covid lockdown id say to be more precise wtt star condender doha march 2021. He changed his game alot he was very controlled to be honeet took the power right down and focused more on spin and placement. In the olympics again had the power but only used it when neccessarily, He had alot more variation, variation in serve he doesnt always toss the ball high, he has different serve actions now. his recieve was more varied i alway think he has been strong in recieve but he had different recieves. To be honest he should have beaten Ovtcharov and played in the semis against Ma long but the pressure got to him and credit to Dima for his experience but overall Dima was struggling big time in that game because how much Hugo had changed. Then in Star condender doha September 2021 which he won , that was Hugo most tactical and calculated tournament he has ever played his variation was sublime. Now this Hugo is alot different to 2019 Hugo where he was just playing power. I think this tournament he has actually been very aggressive but calculated and precise. Hugo should keep this balance between raw power and variation whith spin and speed amd to be tactical calculated. Sorry for the long message😂

Hugo is a bit like Patrick Franziska - when he is on fire, even the best can‘t stop him. Luckily for his opponents, Hugo takes a break quite often and the others get better into the game. Here, Hugo only paused for a few seconds and then continued is extremely unpleasant, highly dynamic fast and powerful play. Next time, Alexis will have better chances, I am positive he figures out a way to brake Hugo‘s rhythm. Can’t wait to see it.

Alex tried to break Hugo's rhythm through chop blocks and funky serve returns and serves, but Hugo seemed to not be bothered. It appears that Hugo had already studied all of Alex's tricks. He just beat him in a Brazil vs France challenge.

I would love to have a 10 seconds or 15 seconds clock between points to speed up the game by WTT. I am sure that Hugo would be in huge trouble with that. His over physical game of overpowering opponents is very easy to play against and win consistently. Hugo is a great player, by way too one-sided to my liking. His tactics are so simple to be exploited and he has to be careful. By the way, changing so many shirts in the match means his match conditioning was very poor. The key in Table Tennis is to finish the points quickly and never over-exerting yourself. Especially when the game grinds to 6 or the maximum 7 sets. By the way, Hugo is always known for straight sets win or in 5 sets. His records in longer sets are very poor indeed. That's how his opponents often grinded out more because of his unforced errors the longer the match wore on.

Hugo was much, much stronger. But if I am Alexis' coach, I would ask him for three things: 1. Varying tactics to counter Hugo, such as making him run at wide shots. No need for power but really good placement so he wouldn't be able to attack too easily. 2. Consistency on his serves so he wouldn't gift-wrapped too many crucial points away. 3. Mental focus on every single point as it is the last ever point. Don't let his anger get to him and reeling by taking too hard. It will be very important for Alexis before every point to think and concentrate. Asking what on earth should I be doing on this serve or this receive. Read his opponent carefully. I think he needs more film studies away from the table and having his coach to really analyze the tactics and how to counter them. This is the strength of the PRC National Men's and the Women's teams. European coaches should do exactly the same so their players are fully prepared and should never having any shock or surprise. There are tons of game films on Hugo and they should really do their homework. I will not put a lot of the blame on young Alexis but the French coaching team needs to do way, way better to prepare their players.

@@michaelferron3866 Well, Alexis is still young and inexperienced. He would be much, much stronger given a year or two. But the problem with Hugo is that he was NEVER known to be CONSISTENT. The challenge for Hugo and anyone else outside the PRC is to beat ALL THE TOP PRC players regularly. Hardly anyone other than Franziska was able to beat Ma Long, Fan Zhendong and Xu Xin ONLY ONCE in their CAREER. Sad to say, that's not great to promote the sport when one country just dominated for decades. The last non-Chinese to win the World Table Tennis Championship: 2003 Austria's great Werner Schlager. 19 years ago.

Junior opponents all ranked 50th and below. Really? How would Fan Zhendong or a Ma Long would do in that case? Or what is Hugo's record playing against both of them, or Xu Xin? Patrick Franziska is the only person who beat Fan, Ma and Xu once in his CAREER. Before you are jumping up and down like Brazil had won the FIFA World Cup. Look at Hugo's opponents in the tournament first. I don't know about you but I will only feel happy if I beat someone who are better and ranked above me.
