Holy God- someone who dedicated years to be able to perform this-- I am shocked and am in awe. No more words.

He said in an interview many years later, recalling how this was filmed, that he was asked to play it on a silent piano that didn't make any sound while a pre-recording was playing in the background. So basically you are watching him synchronizing his hands to his own recording of this work on a fake piano.

yes, angramainiuu, you're right. Thx for this precious information. Here is this interview where Weissenbeg shares a lot of memory about how he discovered and learned Petrushka, AND this "play-back" recording (around 4:38 and after ) : kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4aaaapmfr5qfaM&ab_channel=HarishPrabhakaran

@@JahNawl Lol, why would you not believe it? This was done with artistic integrity; Weissenberg recorded the soundtrack first in a single take, then they shot for ten days with him synchronizing his playing to the earlier recording. Otherwise, they would have had to edit multiple takes and shots of him actually playing a real piano, which would have created a manufactured performance. Instead, only the visuals are manufactured. Understand now?

I recall that’s also how they used to film jazz performances. Imagine transcribing and relearning your own improv every time you were asked to be filmed.

Astonishing to see the degree of dexterity involved to play these pieces.

His 1965 film recording of Stravinsky's Three Movements from Petrushka (directed by Åke Falck) was also highly praised. When Karajan watched the movie, he immediately invited Weissenberg to participate in a filmed performance of the Tchaikovsky First Concerto, replacing Sviatoslav Richter.
