Height at the start of the hood is notably lower (after the bumper) and the hoos was about 4 inches or so shorter in terms of length. i5 is just packaged to be a compromise between ICE/EV so they stuff things like chargers, etc under the hood and that's what eats most of the space. Volvo and Polestar also tend to favor shallower frunks due to concerns about crumple zone performance which is similar to Mercedes' take.

@garrettw99 We don't actually know how they compare. Standardized tests are not done with anything in the cargo area and NHTSA, IIHS, and other NCAP groups around the world have yet to test performance with deformable vs non deformable objects in the front. It's logical to see that a frunk with a gym bag will deform differently than a frunk with a metal suitcase, vs home construction supplies, etc. This is a point that Mercedes made not long ago and I kind of dismissed the thought initially.... Until I was at Home Depot loading concrete pier blocks into the frunk of the Lightning we owned and I thought "hmm, maybe they have a point"?

It is, but Polestar are manufacturing the Polestar 3 in the US which they export to Europe and other markets, when producing and exporting in the US they can off-set some of the tariffs they will incur from importing vehicles, that way they hope to minimize the effect of the tariffs. However, they are currently working on producing the Polestar 4 in South Korea instead of China for the US market, that way they avoid the tariffs entirely. That factory goes live next year. But in the meantime they will be using the US production of the P3 to offset the cost of the tariffs from imported Polestar 2:s and 4:s from China.

PS3 production in the USA won't offset the tariffs because PS3s built here are not being exported to China, at least not for now. I hate to say it, but I actually want this car to fail. I really like Polestar, and I am NOT the person who against buttons moving to touchscreens, not the person against EV's - these are things that are logical progressions with technology. But to remove the rear window, that is needless 'technology' and actually is a step backwards for safety (and common sense) - that is unforgivable. Hopefully the market will speak and companies will not continue with these kinds of decisions.

What is the problem with safety? For me no rear window is not a problem. I am using mostly cameras already now while I have rear view mirror (when parking etc.). On highway you just glance mirror like fraction of a second and then it guess it does not matter if it is a mirror or display. Also I have had many station wagons and if you load cargo area full you do not see anything from mirror either. Or we have our 2 german shepherds there -> limited view anyway. I can still see it can be an issue for less experienced drivers, but for me many times it would be actually better than mirror.

Polestar is ”a publicly traded corporation on the Stockholm exchange headquartered in Sweden. Geely owns around 40% of Polestar directly, Volvo still owns about 40% and Geely owns over 75% of Volvo, so ultimately around 71% of Polestar is owned by Geely.” (AAutoBuyersGuide)

The reality is that Polestar is unreliable crap. I'm not blaming this on Chinese ownership or assembly. Polestar is Volvo, and Volvo has been unreliable with all sorts of electronic gremlins for years. Run, don't walk, from these vehicles.

Not sure if this is 'US' comment, but generally Sweden and Belgium build cars are just fine. I just got our 2020 V60 through mandatory 'yearly' inspection and person doing that commented that V60/S60 do not have any typical issues why they would fail that inspection. He also mentioned that pretty much all Tesla model 3 / Y will fail it. Control arms loose or main light problems typical reasons.

They're not Chinese. Polestar is a Swedish brand with a Chinese parent company. But the teams of people that designed and engineered this car are European based in Sweden. And the 3 and 4 are very different cars, one very much based on a Volvo and the other strongly based on a Zeeker.
