Really resonate with your opinion on software. I used to be kind of a software snob, but then I came to the same realization that I’m just gonna set up my macros once and be done with it.
@allensam89446 ай бұрын
HUNDRED percent agree with the stuff about the software. For everyday use, I normally don't even use layers, and barely need to adjust keys most of the time. which is why I'm so willing to give these budget boards a buy despite having an endgame board already. also moleskin tape on back of pcb is a game changer for me when messing with these budget boards trust me

I bought and fixed up this board for my wife's office use. I think it would have been nicer with a split backspace but it's ok. I don't really like the side profile lighting or the knob. My unit had a surprisingly well tuned stabiliser.

Hi Alex, love your videos! I agree that the software is to use a very few times. But as a Mac user, if the software is not available, the initial setup is not possible at all... Via is a great option due to it being cross platform. Of course, when very budget, they have to cut corners as far as PCB QMK/VIA compatibility, but still, the hobby is making great progress at the budget price bracket, and I wouldn't be surprised if in the near future almost all budget PCBs would be VIA compatible if there is enough push from customers.
@allensam89446 ай бұрын
hm, good point about the cross platform. so would u only get boards with via as of now?
@nicolasiro78516 ай бұрын
@@allensam8944 I already have several keyboards, so I have one where I went all in in with split left shift, split space bar and split backspace for experimenting (luckily the Zoom 65 v2 is VIA compatible). So to me if there is an easy way to put it on Mac layout or control the lighting effects, my next keyboards do not need special software. I do not use layers or macros and can do with regular layouts.

I tape mod every pcb that *isn't* 1.6mm without flex cuts. Tape mod kinda fixes all of the issues that flex cuts and thin pcbs cause.
@Josh-jp3ft6 ай бұрын
I think VIA is super valuable if you are compromising on the layout. Coming from ISO and building an ANSI layout keyboard, you can layer things so that they are still accessible but the keycaps reflect what you are actually typing if you don't use the layers... If you have no need for that maybe its not so bad, or if the software is decent it is also maybe not so bad.

I just wish more of these lower end / cheapier board companies would hop on board with clip in or screw in stabilizers. I have tons and tons of $200-600 boards but there's legit so many gems out there around $100 that would be almost perfected if they didn't only support plate stabs. I get it, they aren't bad now days but they are just annoying to deal with and in some cases take a lot more time to get them to work, feel, and sound good.

@Itsjumbomuffin3 ай бұрын
You can remove the Battery and just unplug it if you dont fuck with it, like i did. I hate it, too. The moment i would need it, it would be absolutely fucked by always being at 100% charge since i would play/type always via cable. so yea there's that. That ONE moment i would use it wireless is at some "Home Office" work or anything like that. About the Software, i 100% agree i heard it's ass and also, i was like "i just need it once for a single second and would never change a thing again, I THINK" thats why i gave it a try. Since everything else seems to be crazy good for the price, it seems like a good deal nontheless.

It's important because you are trusting unknown programers to install software on your computer that controls the most important input/output device that you type all your important information with. Please force them into supporting VIA. It makes the hobby so much easier to have one software for your whole collection. Plus one software to trust that can be more easily scrutinized. I think VIA support is most important for me. I will soon be at 40 boards and having to install a bunch of random software for all these would suck. The other thing is it doesn't hurt the beginner cause they wouldn't know any different. So it's a win win for both collectors and beginners. Also wouldn't these manufacturers save even more money not having to pay a programmer putting more money back in their own pockets. I mean even the Rk61 $45 board now supports QMK/VIA so it can't be a cost thing if even cheap boards can support it. Please force these manufacturers to adopt VIA by complaining about it. I would already own the Yunzii 71 and 66 had the supported VIA.
