Metallica - Orion (Cliff Burton Bass Really Loud)

This is my version of "Orion". I mixed it using Reaper and mastered it using T-Racks CS. This is part of my "Burton of Puppets" project, I'm actually uploading all Burton songs I can find in mogg format, that way I can mix the bass as loud as I want to.
This sounds as if Metallica were a power trio, so whenever Kirk plays a guitar solo, Cliff is the only one providing foundation, rhythm and harmony to the song. This actually turns James into a lead singer only type of role, and I love James but I think that with this type of line-up, Cliff's work can really shine and stand out in the mix.
If you add a rhythm guitar, things get cluttered and the bass disappears. And my goal here is for us to hear every single note Cliff is playing. So the volumes are all switched. When we hear guitars on a record, they're always much louder than the bass, and this is our revenge! Here the bass is the star!! And Cliff deserves that, his arrangements are simply beautiful and shouldn't be buried in the mixdown, so please listen to it as many times as you want and promote it away.
How as able to do that? I had access to the original isolated tracks, so that way I felt free to mix them and highlight the sections I thought were richer to the whole project. That meant cutting off some of James' guitar parts during Kirk's solos, and leaving Lars out of the spotlight cause he mixes his drums super duper loud since he's the leader of the band. That way, Cliff's bass line came to life and the song sounds amazing!

If you can imagine it, then play it. That's what being a musician is. Then it's yours and you can share it. What you're saying is be inspired by him. I can agree with that. I won't give credit for things that never happened though. Lars and James are still alive and look how that turned out..... (they did have a few decent ones but went downhill)

Woke up to go to work in 1986, turned on the radio to 105.5 KNAC, and the DJ said Cliff had died in a bus accident. I was devastated..... I was lucky enough to see Cliff in Metallica at the Long Beach area when they opened for Ozzy. Not too long after, was lucky enough to see Metallica at Jezebel's in Anaheim trying out Jason. Both those concerts were under $20. What a time to be alive.

That part and the bass solo later on are overdubs. If you listen closely Cliff is still playing the root notes underneath from his main take, otherwise the low-end of the track would suddenly thin out when he goes high up on the neck. No doubt he could’ve pulled the whole song off in one take, but it’s a good production choice to keep the low-end consistent

But if they want it louder, then they're probably looking for an isolated track. You can't have an instrument way too loud, otherwise it would never gel with the rest of the band. My mix brings the bass to the lead spectrum, which is usually filled with guitars, or drums or vocals, depending on which band we're talking about. Very rarely with basses, though. The only bands I can think of that feature basses in metal/rock that are also leading are Iron Maiden, Rush, Royal Blood (for obvious reasons), RHCP, Primus, The Who, etc... maybe I'm forgetting some bands, but it's very hard to find bass-laden ones.

I don't see why bass is never really done as much justice as this. In most of Metallica's songs, it's barely conceivable or noticeable. Like, guitar's have a much higher pitch than bass usually, so having them in harmony shouldn't be too much of a stretch, especially when the bass player's skill is as good as Cliff's was.
