Hey Alex how are you? I recently found your KZbin channel after taking an interest in data analytics. I’ve seen tons of your videos already and I am grateful for what you do and all the amazing content you put out. I’ve began taking the Google data analytics course and have been taking plenty of notes, and so far I think it’s an amazing course for someone who’s a beginner like me, but that’s what scares me. I went to college for a technical certificate in automotive. For the last 4 years I’ve been working on cars and making a living in this industry. I’m currently 22 and I know I have plenty of time to switch careers and do something I’ll love. What scares me the most about jumping ship into data analytics is the fact that my resume may be pretty weak compared to someone coming out of college with a bachelors degree in statistics or data related. I plan on making a portfolio and creating an amazing LinkedIn page once I develop my skills more but looking ahead it scares me at the thought of not being able to find a job in this field and being stuck in my current career. Any words of advise and encouragement? I know the google certificate alone won’t get me a job and I plan on taking a few more courses and definitely watching a lot more of your videos as well, but any advise would mean a lot to me thank you!

I took the Tableau Data Analyst Certification exam a few weeks ago, and I received the result 6 hours after the exam. Playing around with Tableau Desktop, Tableau Prep, and Tableau Server is really important because many multiple-choice questions ask you to list the procedure for doing certain steps (i.e. creating subscriptions/alerts, exporting cleaned data from Tableau Prep).

For me , 250 USD is absolutely too expensive for taking a tableau Data Analyst Exam. If you want to show your future employers that you know how to build tableau dashboards , i think taking Tableau Specialist to good enough to go.

I shelled out $750 (at a discount) for the exam prep course. The course offers a mockup exam which is extremely valuable. Using Associate Cert. preparation is NOT enough. For example, an exam question requires us to know the difference between Rank Dense vs. Unique, Initial SQL vs. Custom SQL ... the title sounds cool, but the exam is challenging if you haven't used Tableau Desktop/Prep/Server for a while (I would say years). Long term, I think the same is going to be a requirement. Short term, probably not ... I took the exam on March 4, 2022, and was still one of the first 1,000 (got this early bird thing) which tells me the demand is still low (or many fail?).

Should I learn statistics skill (aside the basic ones) before or after the data analyst certifications?

I think statistics is more often used at the mid/senior level. You'll need basic statistics at the beginning, but nothing super advanced.

For what's it worth, I agree with Alex. Statistics goes quickly very complicated ... #1 mistake I see: using standard deviations on a non-parametric distribution (not Gaussian distribution) where 2 standard deviations result in negative numbers. Hilarious.

Hey Alex, i am in the process of deciding which one between these two to take: Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate (cost 39$ a month) or the The Tableau Data Analytics Certificate (course cost around $3000, it incorporates business analytics implications)? I have a bachelor of science in economics and looking to do a career shift to business and data analytics. I know the first certificate includes the use of R programming language, so i am quite curious as to which one you recommend minding the cost, skills that will be acquired and career and employment prospective. I would recommend using Tableau and taking separate courses on Tableau if you want the certification. I don't think that price would ever make me want to pay for it lol

Hi, Thee. switching your major will be the best way to get a data analysis or data science job. However, career transition is still possible for you to get into the field. But You NEED SOME REAL-LIFE PROJECT to secure a Job.

Hello Alex, now I’ve only just got done with the 3rd Course of the Google Data Analytics certificate. As u know only too well I shall eventually have to explore working with tableau, doesn’t the google certificate offer sufficient knowledge of tableau to get started as a junior data analyst ? In the real world, a greater mastery of tableau is needed as a data analyst. The coursera tableau certificate is better as a starting point. I completed it but need to continue mastering tableau due to the complex work required by my job.

It depends on the job requirements; if you go for a pure Tableau role or a general data analyst role. I'm a "Tableau Certified Data Analyst" and full-time Tableau developer. However, if you're early in your career, I recommend Google's certificates as it's broader (R, SQL, Tableau..). Good luck!

Why would one want a certification from Tableau? Do employers really care? As long as you practice and make projects and focus on getting better, isn't that enough?

I think that most of the time certifications are worthless. But on rare occasions they could give you a slight edge over another, otherwise equal, job candidate. And they will never hurt your chances of landing a job. But yes, experience and projects are far more beneficial for job hunting. imo

Yea, your statement is not wrong. But how employers can know your skills? If you just said "I do a lot of projects." It's kind of ambiguous, because whether it's a hard project and easy project it is still a project. Basically certificate (legal ones) is just a proof that you are skilled in that field. It's even better if you have an advance training program's certificate. So it's stated that you are an advanced in that field. It can give you more chance to get a job and give you more wages Sorry if my explanation is too long

@@Felix-jn2ly Well, first off, you don't just say "I do a lot of projects." You have to actually do the projects. There's a difference between reading how to do something and doing it. Certifications test you on how well you can take tests. There's nothing wrong with certifications, I have some, but I think some people see them as some sort of magic key that will, on their own, land them their dream job. Certifications should be viewed as something 'in addition to' actual experience and projects. And often times, the certification someone puts on their resume for a job application is the exact same certification that 10,000 other people put on their resumes.
