Being funny on a press conference does not help you connect with fans. Doing parkour on your balcony is much better :D Tweeting memes and something funny after the race or dressing as a banana on live stream also. So teams need to let their drivers be as funny as they want and stop micro managing them like they did in the past. I don't know if Lando forced mclaren to be more relaxed or if mclaren embraced it immediately, but the combination kind of changed the game in social media.
@LethalWalou4 жыл бұрын
I feel that one part has been ignored and that is Liberty Media. They started bringing the sport much more into social media and started offering us glimpses of something else of the drivers and the sport. For a few races we even had access to the driver briefings and we saw behind the scenes. We've had video series like 'Grill the grid' and videos like ''Secret Santa'' given to us on social media. Liberty Media plays in my opinion quite a big part in starting this whole thing off.
@9danny814 жыл бұрын
@@LethalWalou Yeah from what I understand, drivers options of engaging on social media were pretty limited back when Bernie Ecclestone was in charge. That's honestly the main thing that was keeping me from Formula 1 in the previous years, just the old fashioned nature, lack of engagement and connection with fans. Took me a while to see the changes and get into the sport, with this season being the first I'm following really closely, already buzzing for next season.

People who followed F1 on Dutch tv have known the openness of drivers for a lot longer. Rubens Barrichello, to give an example, was joking with interviewers since the mid-90s already. It's not really that drivers are not open and joking, it's more the approach that interviewers and other outsiders have to drivers. If people feel good with a person, they are a lot more open. Or else they'll go into their serious mode, and just answer the questions. The most important thing is: let people be who they are, and don't try to make them something they are not.

This video is exactly what I've thought about Lando's new influence in F1. Before him, everything was so corporate and serious, it felt as if there was such a massive detachment between the fans and drivers due to their television personas, but with streaming it shows the true side of them that they often keep hidden away from the public eye. I think the timing for his entry together with a host of his mates from the lower formulae hasn't hurt. Without that, his online persona wouldn't have translated into his "official" interviews quite as much. The Sky Team tapped into that very cleverly as well, with the dual interviews where George and Albon for example would criticise each other's laps. If they didn't have each other to interact with in that way, none of it would have mattered much for one individual's perception in the public eye outside the steamers community.

I think Daniel Ricciardo started off the whole being more jokey and accessible with fans/media but Lando has definitely been the big catalyst for it. Lando's shown the other drivers that it's OK to be more accessible to the fans and the media and that the drivers don't have to worry about it impacting their performance on the track. The next generation of drivers (Lando, Charles, Alex, George, Max, Sainz & Latifi) are all definitely going to really benefit from what Lando (and to a certain extent Daniel before him) has pioneered, especially Latifi who now has a solid fanbase through his Twitch streams before he's even driven a single race in F1. It's worth mentioning as well that Sophia Floersch already has a really solid presence on KZbin as a regular content creator and that is going to help her no doubt once she eventually makes it into F1 (which I really think she will, given time).

It really started to change around 2019 not only with Lando but also with the help of a show called "Drive to Survive" which is also doing a great job at humanising the drivers. That and quarantine. Leclerc playing fall guys in banana costume? I'm in xD And it makes you more engaged in the sport really. Back in 2008 I knew couple of the drivers, was big fan of Alonso, Massa, Raikonnen but outside of that you really didn't even remember their faces. Right now I can say something about any of the current drivers, because they are so damn recognisable. I know how they behave, what are their interests outside F1 and what....well...drives them to still pursue their dreams. Every one of them has an unique story to tell. You can see they are more like a family to each other, especially the young generation, that actually comes from one place.
