I swear there's material from the violin sonatas in this, particularly the motif at 2:06 I love how Schnittke's thematic integrity spans across his entire ouvre like this.

YOu know what this fugue reminds me of? Imagine you are some great composer who has never been in a big city. Take them for a walk in downtown New York City. Then have them write a fugue about the experience. This is it!

I usually dont care for Schnittke. Ive only ever liked his a cappella choral music. However, this piece is filled with just enough motion to keep me interested. Thanks George 👍
@GNGianopoulos5 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend listening to more of his music. It is never static - his music is always very active (with "motion") and is usually more perpetuum in character than most contemporary composers.

Beautiful energetic piece! But... where's the fugue part? :D I was eagerly waiting to see what Schnittke had to say about fugues...!
@MahlayStudios3 жыл бұрын
This fugue is probably more relatable to Messiaen's Vingt Regards No.6, since both composers seem to present the 'countersubject' (in Schnittke's case, the fast moving eights) with the 'subject' (the spaced out eights). On top of that (I'm creatively guessing here), if one were to take 0:50 to about 2:46, the fragmentations of the improvisation slowly decay to become the contrapuntal material that Schnittke develops more extensively in the fugue.

With 20th century fugues, a lot more liberty is taken with density, equal treatment, and structuring of the voices, so that's my interpretation of this piece? if that helps..

Really hard to listen as fugue. I get the sequence at beginning, but my ears fail to capture anything except the obvious bang - - bang - - bang -🤣

If he called it a fugue, I think we can assume it is so. Our feeble minds simply can't parse this amazing and unbelievably complex work. It's like a piano equivalent of the Rite of Spring.
@Dizzyfingers23 жыл бұрын
@@PointyTailofSatan First: speak for yourself when it comes to feeble minds. Second, this has nothing to do with comparing the Rite of Spring for piano by Stravinsky (who by the way used Fugue structure in works such as Symphony of Psalms). Assumption is a ridiculous defense simply because the composer calls it: "Fuga". Bringing in small excerpts /motifs throughout this section does not make it a "Fugue" by definition. If that were the case Wagner would be the King of Fugues. Measure 16 stops everything. Simply bringing the theme in occasionally (ex. at meas 21 for 3 measures) does not signify a 15 measure fugue. It isn't even listed in studies of fugues - so if you can find an analysis of this particular "Fuga" - I'll be happy to read it. Until then ...
