Ghost Dances
Wounded Knee, 1890
By Roland Barrett
Item: 00-32538
Series: Belwin Symphonic Band
Grade 4
Format: Conductor Score & Parts
Inspired by the tragic score of the Lakota Sioux massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890, this dynamic Roland Barrett original work is contemporary, featuring aleatoric musical fragments, and exceeds the bounds of an ultra-emotional musical presentation. Bravo! (6:45) This title is available in SmartMusic.

The fact that this comment is coming from a native percussionist, hearing about the wounded knee massacre scares me but brings different layers of music that is beautiful. the flute has a soft feeling of healing, the woodwinds has the feeling of bravery, trumpets has sound of courage, and the percussion has the feeling of the indigenous people being relentless and fearless of fighting for there people

And I’m guessing by Trumpets, you mean *all* brass instruments. Otherwise, I would assume it’s just trumpets alone. (And not to be rude, and I know you know this, but Trumpet is not the only brass instrument. There is also French horn, trombone, baritone, and tuba)

@lovermuzak
@lovermuzak 5 жыл бұрын
@@cjaverysrandomreviews4675, I get what Anna is complaining about, it is when you are on piccolo and you have to sit out a lot. Sometimes you don't want to have to switch instruments, i have recently stopped switching back and forth unless it is called or in the music. I would just get the flute part and play in down the octave, just to help to keep me focused and my instrument ready.
@144adex3
@144adex3 4 жыл бұрын
That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Band composers should be less afraid to have people sit out. Having the entire band playing constantly just creates the same generic band sound that’s been heard thousands of times before.

1:25 I know this isn’t the main part it feels so impactful, it feels like a commotion the tribe had before the massacre, the oboe soloists indicates the meting, the aleatoric though it is inspired by the native dances, is showing the point before the massacre starts, reaching its climax.

The beats from measure 34 to 41 and measure 161-167, how do they work?
@karlwilker579
@karlwilker579 3 жыл бұрын
The instructions given basically tell the musicians to play those notes, in that basic pattern, but with room for interpretation. The idea is that there is no "beat" in that section, just chaos. The players a cued by the conductor on when to come in.
